Description

APPARATUS FOR TESTING THE STRENGTH OF JOINTS IN MEMBERS This invention relates to apparatus for testing the strength of joints in members.
In the glazing industry, tests are required for testing the strength of joints in members. Thus, for example, the strength of joints needs to be tested in unplasticised polyvinyl chloride members for use in the construction of windows.
It is an aim of the present invention to provide apparatus for testing the strength of joints in members in a simple and uniform manner.
Accordingly, in one non-limiting embodiment of the present invention there is provided apparatus for testing the strength of joints in members, which apparatus comprises a housing, a ram device, a securing device for separately securing a member having a right angle joint and a member having a tee joint in a first position in the housing such that one limb of the member having the right angle joint or the member having the tee joint is positioned underneath the ram device, movable rest means on which fre & ends of the member having the right angle joint can rest when the member having the right angle joint is in a second position with its corner underneath the ram device, and a gauge for measuring forces subjected by the ram device to the member having the right angle joint and the member having the tee joint.
The housing may be rectangular or square.
The ram device is preferably a hydraulic ram device. The ram device may however be a pneumatic ram device or an electric ram device if desired. Usually, the ram device will have a piston which operates in a cylinder but other arrangements such for example as a linear actuator arrangement may be employed.
The ram device may have an end which engages the member under test, and in which the said end has a profile which is complementary to the profile of the member under test.
The securing device is preferably a clamp device.
The clamp device may comprise a screw threaded shank, a handle at one end of the shank, and a joint-engaging member at the other end of the shank. The joint-engaging member preferably has a profile which is complementary to the profile of the member under test.
The clamp device may comprise a pair of rod members which fit at each end in a recess formed in side members, the side members being fixed to the housing whereby the clamp device can be engaged with and dis-engaged from the side members by inserting the rod members into and removing the rod members from the recesses. Such an arrangement gives a quick release facility and avoids the use of spanners and like tightening instruments.
The gauge will usually be a calibrated gauge.
The apparatus may include an intermediate member for acting between the ram and the joint of the member under test. The intermediate member may have a part circular portion for engaging the ram device, and a straight sided portion for engaging the member under test.
The apparatus may include a stand by which the apparatus is mounted.
In order to achieve uniformity of tests, the size of the members under test will usually be predetermined.
The housing will thus be of a size to accommodate these members. By way of example only, it is mentioned that the cabinet may be 750mm long and 700mm wide An embodiment of the invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a front view of apparatus for testing the strength of joints in members; Figure 2 is an enlarged front view of a ram device forming part of the apparatus shown in Figure 1; Figure 3 is a front view of an intermediate member for acting between the ram device and the joint of a member J under test; Figure 4 is a perspective view of part of securing device shown in Figure 1; Figure 5 is a top view of the securing device shown in Figures 1 and 4; Figure 6 is a rear view of the securing device as shown in Figure 5; and Figure 7 is a side view of the securing device as shown in Figure 5.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown apparatus 2 for testing the strength of joints in members. The apparatus 2 is especially designed for testing the strength of joints in unplasticised polyvinyl chloride members for use in the construction of windows.
The apparatus 2 comprises a housing 4, a ram device 6, and a securing device 8 for separately securing a member having a right angle joint or a member having a tee-joint (not shown) in a first position in the housing 4 such that one limb of the member having the right angle joint or the member having the tee-joint is positioned underneath the ram device 6. The apparatus 2 further comprises movable rest means 10 on which free ends of the member having the right angle joint can rest when the member having the right angle joint is in a second position with its corner underneath the ram device 6. The apparatus 2 still further comprises a calibrated gauge 12 for measuring forces subjected by the ram device to the member having the right angle joint and the member having the tee joint.
The housing 4 is a rectangular housing which is 750mm long and 700mm wide.
The ram device 6 is a hydraulic ram. The ram device 6 has an end 14 which may engage the member under test or which may engage an intermediate member 16 as shown in Figure 3. The intermediate member 16 comprises a part circular portion 18 for engaging the end 14 of the ram device 6, and a straight sided portion 20 for engaging the member under test.
The securing device 8 is a clamp device. The securing device 8 comprises a screw threaded shank 22, a handle 24 at one end of the shank 22, and an engaging member 26 at the other end of the shank 22. The engaging member has a profile which is complementary to the profile of the member under test.
The securing device 8 also comprises a pair of rod members 28, 30. The rod members 28, 30 fit at each end in recesses 32, 34 in side members 36, 38. The side members 36, 38 are fixed to the housing 4 whereby the securing device 8 can be engaged with and dis-engaged from the side members 36, 38 simply by inserting the rod members 28, 30 into and removing the rod members 28, 30 from the recesses 32, 34. This provides a quick release action for the securing device 8. This quick release action avoids the need for spanners and similar tightening instruments.
The housing 4 has a closable front door for safety. The door can be seen through and it is made of an appropriate structure such that safety is maintained even if the joint of the member under test should fail.
The movable rest means 10 each comprise a pair of rollers 40, 42 separated by a body 44. The rollers 40, 42 run between guide rails 46..
The apparatus 2 includes a pipe 46 connected to the ram device 6. The apparatus 2 further includes a pipe 48 connecting the ram to the pressure gauge 12.
The apparatus 2 has a door catch 50 which only allows operation of the apparatus 2 when the door catch is dlosed. The apparatus 2 also has an insulation button 52, a fuse box 54, and a flexible control switch 56. The flexible control switch 56 is also shown in scrap side view in Figure 1.
The housing 4 has a cable 60 providing a connection to mains.
It is to be appreciated that the embodiment of the invention described above with reference to the accompanying drawings has been given by way of example only and that modifications may be effected. Thus, for example, the apparatus 2 may be used for testing a joint in a member other than an unplasticised polyvinyl chloride member for a window. Thus the member may be for use in a patio door.
Also, other types of ram device 6, securing device 8, movable rest means 10 and gauge 12 may be employed. The apparatus 2 may be provided with a stand on which the housing 4 can rest.
The rod members 28, 30 are secured to a plate member 62. The rod members 28, 30 may be secured by rivet screws or pins 64 as shown in Figure 4. The shank 24 screws through a hole 66 in the plate member 62. PVC packing members 68 may be employed if desired.
Referring to Figure 1, when the member under test has a right angle joint, then one limb of the member under test will be secured by the securing device 8, whilst the other limb of the member under test will be subjected to the force of the ram device 6. A similar action occurs if the member under test has a tee joint. With regard to the member having the right angle joint, in a second test, the member can be placed with its angle in the end 14. The free ends of the limbs of the member will then be resting one on each of the bodies 44. As downward pressure is applied by the ram device 8, the joint will start to spread and the limbs of the member under test can thus move apart since the rollers 40, 42 will roll away from each other.
The ram device 6 is controlled by solenoids 70, 72. A device 74 is provided for adjusting the pressure rate of the downward mode of operation of the ram device 6. Other arrangements to the illustrated solenoids 70, 72 and the device 74 may be employed if desired.
