Abstract

An outerlap (4) has a protruding edge of paper created by one edge of the sheet of paper with the other edge of the sheet being the same length as the shorter folds of the sheet. This protruding edge acts as the means of opening the section at the centre as required during the saddle stitching process in the production of magazines, brochures, booklets and like. <IMAGE>

Description

OUTERLAP DESCRIPTION This invention relates to the Binding Lap used in Saddle Stitching Magazines, Brochures and like.
Traditionally the lap used for saddle stitching 16 page sections and above is formed by folding the sheet of paper edge to edge.
This lap is then used to open the section, by use of the fingers on the saddle stitching machine, at the centre prior to dropping on the transport chain. This method has been used in the Print Finishing Industry since the introduction of saddle stitching as a method of binding.
The reason the lap was formed this way was based on the tradition in book binding of folding paper edge to edge to assist in knocking up requirements during gathering, sewing, trimming etc. This is not necessary, according to the present invention the only requirement to open the section is the leaf of paper at the centre of the section. This is formed from one edge of the sheet only, the inner part of the lap is not required, this being formed by the other edge of the sheet.
There is no requirement for the foredge of the product to be even, as it is knocked up to the trimming stop on the spine, by means of belts that grip the product. This invention therefore enables the printer to use a smaller size sheet/reel size. The reduction in size will depend on the requirements of any colour, fold control marks used down the centre of the sheet and the width of lap required.
Figure 1 shows traditional method of folding a sheet to create a saddle stitching lap (1) from the outer edges of a sheet together with an imposition laydown showing same.
Figure 2 shows another traditional method of folding a sheet to create a saddle stitching lap (1) this time from the centre of the sheet with imposition laydown.
Figure 3 shows the outerlap (4) method of folding a sheet to create lap from one edge of the sheet together with imposition laydown.
Fiaure 4 shows the outerlap (4) method of creating lap for 24 pp web section - one and half reels used.
Figure 5 shows the outerlap (4) method for a 32 page section.
Figure 6 shows lap (1) created by one edge of the sheet 4 page section.
Figure 7 shows lap (1) created by one edge of sheet for 8 page section.
Figure 8 shows lap (1) created by cut off edge of short grain web fed press.
Figure 9 shows lap (4) with no bolts (closed edges) on head tail or foredge.
This invention is applicable to any folding imposition for saddle stitched products where the lap can be created down the centre or from the two outer edges. It is acknowledged it does not apply to impositions such as 4 pp, 8 pp, 6 pp, and like that create the lap (1) only from one edge also where a fixed cut on a web press governs the sheet size on this dimension.

Claims (5)

1. An outerlap (4) gives the facility to open the section at the centre page of a 16 page plus section as required by an automatic saddle stitching machine using fingers or grippers as shown in figures 3,4,5.
2. An Outerlap (4) gives the facility as claimed in claim 1 above using a smaller sheet or reel size than the traditional lap (1) as shown is figures 1,2,3.
3. An outerlap (4) gives the facility as claimed in claim 1 above to sections of 16 pp 24 pp 32 pp 48 pp 64 pp and like of varying imposition where the lap would be created by the centre fold or two outside edges of the sheet and would therefore give the facility as claimed in claim two above as shown if figures 3,4,5.
4. An outerlap gives the facility as claimed in claim 1 and 2 above whether the section has open (2) or closed bolt (3) head foredge or tail as shown in figure 9
5. An outerlap does not give the facility claimed in 1 and 2 above where the lap is created from one edge of the sheet or by the fixed cut off in web printing as shown in figures 6,7,8.
