Abstract

The device, to allow cows to feed in peace, includes a pair of yoke-type gates 1, 2, which are hinged to the existing stall 14. These yoke type gates are connected to the rear gates 3, 4 by means of two overhead connecting bars 5, 6, these bars are in turn connected by a diagonal bar 9, by means of bolts through flat plates 7, 8, to synchronise the gates. Overhead bars 5, 6, can also have telescopic extensions to allow for variation of cow sizes. Springs 10, 11, are to pull yoke type gates 1, 2, back, thus opening rear gates 3, 4, against stops when not in use. <IMAGE>

Description

ANTI-BULLY GATES DEVICE TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION This invention relates to a device to stop the bullying associated with out-of-parlour feeders.
BACKGROUND Dairy cattle are often fed concentrates in a computerised out-of-parlour feeder system.
A system like this enables a cow to go at will into an individual stall to receive a given amount of concentrates at periodic intervals through a twenty-four hour period. A drawback with this type of feeding system is that certain bully-type cows who have already received their ration tend to wait outside the feed stalls for other cows to go in to feed and as their ration is dispensed the 'bully' cow will force the feeding cow out of the stall by butting her in the udder and hind quarters in an attempt to get to the concentrates freshly dispensed. This can result in undue stress and all sorts of animal health problems.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The present invention proposes an Anti-Bully Gate device which consists of a yoke assembly which fits in the front of the stall, which when activated by a cow feeding, closes a pair of gates at the rear of the stall by means of two parallel connecting rods above the cow.
A system where a cow pushes a brisket board and activates a larger, single rear gate has been used on occasions but this system is more costly and not so effective.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS The invention is exemplified in the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is an activated plan view of an Anti-Bully Gate device Figure 2 is a bird's-eye view of the gates open, and Figure 3 is a side view of the device.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS The device includes a pair of yoke-type gates 1, 2, which are hinged to the existing stall 14. These yoke type gates are connected to the rear gates 3, 4, by means of two overhead connecting bars 5, 6, these bars are in turn connected by a diagonal bar 9, by means of bolts through flat plates 7, 8, to synchronise the gates (best seen in Figure 2). Overhead bars 5, 6, also have telescopic extensions 15,16 by means of internal springs and adjustable ends 12, 13, by a series of four holes (best seen in Figure 2) to allow for variation of cow sizes. Springs 10, 17, are to pull yoke type gates 1, 2, back, thus opening rear gates 3, 4, against stops 17, 18 when not in use.
The whole assembly is made of steel.
