Abstract

An adaptor 3 for a vehicle fuel tank filler pipe 2 provides a closure, fitted in addition to the usual inhibitor flap 5, which is located nearer to the pump nozzle entry point than the flap 5. The adaptor has an arm 6 which permanently opens the existing inhibitor flap 5 and replaces its function with an alternative inhibitor flap, which may comprise two spring-loaded semi-circular flaps 7, 8. These flaps, being nearer to the inlet of the filler pipe, may thus be opened by use of a shorter nozzle 1 than that required to open the original flap 5. The adaptor may be moulded from plastic and snap-fit inside the filler pipe. <IMAGE>

Description

Title: Filler Pite Adaptor Field of the Invention The present invention relates to filler pipe adaptors for cars and other petrol driven vehicles.
Background to the Invention As a result of European legislation, special filler guns are being introduced to assist fuel vapour recovery during refuelling. Service Stations are introducing modified filler guns with shorter nozzles. However, older cars may be fitted with a leaded fuel inhibitor flap between the vehicle filler cap and tank. These inhibitor flaps cannot be opened by the shorter nozzles and hence the gun will not operate to deliver fuel to the tank.
It is therefore an objective of the invention to adapt the filler pipe of a vehicle so that it may be used with filler gun having both short and long nozzles.
Summarv of the Invention According to the present invention, there is provided a filler pipe adaptor for mounting in a vehicle filler pipe having an inhibitor flap and comprising inhibitor flap opening means extending from a body section of the adaptor, an alternative inhibitor flap means mounted on the adaptor body remote from the inhibitor flap actuator means so that in use the alternative inhibitor flap means is actuated by a filler pump nozzle.
Preferably the alternative inhibitor flap means comprises two hinged flaps which are spring loaded to close the vehicle filler pipe until pushed aside by a pump nozzle.
Brief Description of the Drawings The invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the drawing in which: Figure 1 shows in cross section a vehicle fuel filler pipe including an adaptor in accordance with the invention.
Figure 1 shows a service station pump nozzle (1) in a delivery position within a vehicle filler pipe (2) having an adaptor (3) mounted in a constriction (4) which is closed by an inhibitor flap (5). The inhibitor flap (5) is held open by an arm (6) extending from the body portion of the adaptor (3). Two semi-circular flaps (7) and (8) are pivotally mounted in the throat of the adaptor and spring biased to close the throat in normal driving conditions.
In use, when a pump filler gun nozzle (1) is inserted into the filler pipe (2), the adaptor flaps (7) and (8) are pushed aside and the petrol is unobstructed in its flow into the vehicle fuel tank (not shown). When the nozzle (1) is removed the flaps (7) and (8) return to close the throat of the adaptor as shown by the dotted lines. Preferably the adaptor is fitted with snap fittings which engage with the constriction (4) to retain the adaptor (3) in position.
It will be appreciated that if a long nozzle is inserted in the filler pipe (2) the flaps (7) and (8) will be opened in the same manner as with the shorter nozzle described above.
Preferably, the adaptor is made of plastics material, such as nylon, which is unaffected by the fuel.

Claims
1. A filler pipe adaptor for mounting in a vehicle filler pipe having an inhibitor flap and comprising inhibitor flap opening means extending from a body section of the adaptor, an alternative inhibitor flap means mounted on the adaptor body remote from the inhibitor flap actuator means so that in use the alternative inhibitor flap means is actuated by a filler pump nozzle.
2. A filler pipe adaptor as claimed in claim 1 in which the alternative inhibitor flap means comprises two semicircular flaps spring loaded to close the vehicle filler pipe.
3. A filler pipe adaptor as claimed in any preceding claim in which the adaptor includes snap fittings to secure it in the filler pipe.
4. A filler pipe adaptor as claimed in any preceding claim in which the adaptor is formed from plastics material.
5. A filler pipe adaptor substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
