Abstract
A palm-triggered photo switch comprises at least two facing LEDs 3 and receivers 4. The photo switch actuates a solid state switch e.g. a solid-state relay in response to the palm of an adult person's hand being placed between either of the LEDs 3 and its associated light receiver, 4 e.g. a PIN diode. The photo switch can be used to operate machinery, and an audible warning of LED failure is given. <IMAGE>
Description
PALM-TRIGGERED PHOTO SWITCH
BACKGROUND OF mE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a palm-triggered photo switch, and more particularly to a manually controlled switch for use in operating a machinery.
A push-button control is a switch device that is most commonly used in controlling and switching the operation of a machinery. It is generally required of an operator to use both hands to push simultaneously both controll buttons so as to start the machinery or to switch the operation of the machinery. Such pushbutton control device is defective in that it can be improperly used by an operator to switch the operation of the machinery, thereby resulting in an erroneous operation of the machinery. For example, a machine operator may use an object or a tap to keep one of the two control buttons in "ON" position all the time while he or she is operating the machine. Such maneuver permits the machine operator to control the operation of machine in such a manner that he or she can control the operation of the machine with one hand and in the meantime with other hand free to do other chores.Such improper practice can often bring about a serious consequence, such as a damage done to the machinery or an injury to the operator. In addition, a machine operator is easily subjected to fatigue brought about by a boring chore of having to puch buttons repetitiously while on duty.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
It is therefore the primary objective of the present invention to provide a palm-tiggered photo switch, which can be easily and manually controlled by a machine operator.
It is another objective of the present invention to provide a palm-triggered photo switch, which can be easily manufactured at low cost.
In keeping with the principles of the present invention, the foregoing objectives of the present invention are accomplished by a palm-tiggered photo switch, which comprises mainly a power supply circuit and a light emitting diode (LED) light supply drive circuit. The power supply circuit is used to provide a stable DC power source. The LED light supply drive circuit is connected to an end of the power supply circuit and is provided with at least two LED light sources and two LED receivers, with each LED receiver arranged correspondingly to each LED light sources in a linear manner. The LED receiver is provided with PIN receiver, amplifier, comparator, and a SSR switch. The SSR solid state relay switch can be easily changed to "OFF" or "ON" status by means of an operator's hands acting to permit or obstruct the LED light source of the LED receiver.
The objectives and the features of the present invention will be better understood by studying the following detailed description of a preferred embodiment of the present invention in conjunction with the drawings provided herewith.
BRIEF DE:SCRIPIION OF mE DRAWINGS
FIG. 1 shows a layout diagram of optical system of a palm-triggered photo
switch of the present invention.
FIG. 2 shows a control flow chart of a palm-triggered photo switch of the present invention.
FIG. 3 shows a diagram of control circuit of a palm-triggered photo switch of the present invention.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF ThE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
Referring to FIG. 1, a palm-triggered photo switch embodied in the present invention is shown comprising a control case 1 containing a main drive circuit and a control circuit. There are two LED light sources 3 arranged at both sides of the control case 1. Located near both sides of the control case 1 are two receiving cases 2, each of which is in communication with the control case 1 by means of a wire 5 and is provided therein with a photodiode 4. The distance between the LED light source 3 and the photodiode 4 is slightly greater than the width of an adult's palm, while the height of their layout is slightly shorter than the thickness of an adult's palm. With palm surfaces facing downwardly, a machine operator places his or her palms in the spaces between the LED light source 3 and the photodiode 4 so as to turn on the drive device of the machine.
As shown in FIG. 2, a power supply circuit 11, 12 is provided for converting an AC power supply of 220V or 110V into a standard power source having + 5V. The LED 3 is actuated to emit light by LED light source drive circuit 13 which is connected with a warning device 14. The light emitted by the
LED light source 3 is received by the photodiode 4 and is subsequently transferred through the amplifying and comparing circuit 15 and then to an external control device 16 made up of a solid state relay (SSR) switch controlling the operation of the machine.
The circuit operation of the preferred embodiment of the present invention is illustrated in FIG. 3. The original power source of 220V or 110V is converted to a power source having +12V voltage by means of a transformer T1 of power supply circuit 11 and 12. Such power source of +12V voltage is subsequently rectified to a standard power source of +5V voltage so as to drive the LED light source circuit 13. Whenever a problem arises, the warning device 14 is alerted via an inverter G1, G2 so that a warning sound is produced by a siren
B1. The photodiode 4, which is opposite to the LED light source 3, is provided with a receiving circuit so as to pick up the light emitted by the LED light source 3.The received light is then transferred from the photodiode 4 to comparator
OP1, OP2, OP3, OP4 of the amplifying and comparing circuit 15, where it is amplified and compared so as to actuate the solid state switch S1 via the inverter
G3.
When the light emitted by the LED light source 3 is obstructed by the operator's hands, the "ON" signal is sent out by the photodiode circuit via the inverter G3. Such "ON" signal serves to drive the SSR solid state switch Siso as to control the action of the machine. On the other hand, when the light emitted by the LED light source 3 is permitted to pass through the receiving circuit of the photodiode 4, the "OFF" signal is sent out, thereby resulting in an inaction of the
SSR or the machine. It must be noted here that the inaction of the machine takes place as long as the operator is using one hand to obstruct the light or using both hands, which are not properly positioned.
An AC power source of either 110V or 220V may be used as a power supply of the present invention. As long as the power voltage remains in a range between 90V and 250V, any power source including the one having a tripping voltage may be acceptable to the light switch of the present invention.
If the commonly used relay employing the voltage of 110V with load current of 5A is replaced by the SSR employing the voltage of 220V with load current of 10A so as to permit the switch to bear various loads. Such design serves to avoid any possible complexity having to do with using a relay to control the operation of the machine after a weak signal is amplified by a coupler. In other words, such design as disclosed in the present invention is characterized in that it overcomes the bottleneck of conventional 110V or 220V output-input specification and that it is provided at a low cost with a capability to switch the power source.
In addition, the manually controlled light switch of the present invention is easy to use by an operator, who is not subjective to the risk of body injury or the fatigue.
The embodiment of the present invention described above is to be considered in all respects as merely illustrative and not restrictive. Accordingly, the present invention may be embodied in other specific forms without deviating from the spirit thereof. The present invention is, therefore, to be limited only by the scope of the hereinafter appended claims.
