Abstract

A moulding material for producing durable plastic, chemically resistant devices, containers, pipes and the like, consists of 25 - 60 parts by weight of a phenol formaldehyde resin and 40 - 75 parts by weight of a mixture of filler materials, strengthening fibres and conventional accessory materials. In order to increase resistance to temperature changes and resistance to the effects of chemical media, particularly organic solvents, without the mechanical properties and heat resistance being impaired, the phenol formaldehyde single stage resin contains about 0.5 - 10.0% by weight of one or more substances of the formula. <IMAGE> wherein R1 = -CH2 Hal or -Hal R2 = -CH2 Hal or -H R3 = -Hal or -CH2OH the Hal group represents chlorine or bromine and "n" is 1 to 5.e

Description

2265906 A MOULDABLE MATERIAL The invention relates to a composition
particularly, but not exclusively, to a composition for use as a mouldable material for producing pra-stic, chemically resistance devices, containers, pipes and the like, comprising about 25 - 60 parts by weight of a phenol formaldehyde resin and preferably about 40 - 75 parts by weight of a mixture of filler materials, strengthening fibres and customary additive materials.
DE-PS 27 38 490, DE-PS 27 38 491 and DE-PS 31 48 326 disclose kneadable mouldable materials which are able, in particular, to be processed by hand, for producing chemically resistant single-coated devices, containers, pipes or the like of self-supporting structure. The mouldable material consists of a mixture of a hot-hardening, pre- condensed phenol formaldehyde resin, powdery mineral filler material such as heavy spar, kaolin, mica, graphite, coke powder, soot or the like, strengthening fibres, particularly glass- and/or carbon fibres, and other customary additive materials including catalysts, thickening agents, accelerators and the like. Particularly when there are temperature fluctuations, cracks can occur in shaped members produced from a mouldable material of this kind, and these cracks either render the shaped members unusable or mean that a considerable amount of repair is needed.
We have now found it possible to create a mouldable material which has better resistance to temperature fluctuations and increased resistance to the effects of chemical media, particularly organic solvents, without the mechanical properties and heat resistance being adversely affected.
According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided a mouldable material of the kind described in the introduction, comprising a phenol formaldehyde single stage resin containing approx. 0. 5 to 10.0 % by weight of one or more compounds of the formula
Ri R2-C -(CH2)n0H 1 R3 2 wherein: R, = -CH2 Hal or -Hal R2 = -CH2 Hal or -H R3 = -Hal or -CH2 OH the Hal group represents the halogens, chlorine and bromine and "n" is from 1 to 5.
The shaped members produced from a mouldable material of this kind have greater resistance to temperature fluctuations and have good resistance, particularly to organic solvents, without their mechanical properties being adversely affected.
Preferably, in addition to the phenol formaldehyde resin, the mouldable material also contains filler materials, strengthening fibres and conventional additive materials. Examples of filler materials which can be used are heavy spar, kaolin, mica, graphite, coke powder or soot. Examples of strengthening fibres are commercially available glass fibres, carbon fibres, aramid fibres, ceramics fibres or silicon dioxide fibres. The fibres can be mixed as single fibres, for example, with an average length of 0.5 - 60 mm, or introduced into the mouldable material in the form of textile fabrics, matting, fleece or webbing.
To accelerate the hardening reaction, it is possible to add alkali- or earth alkali hydroxides or -oxides or acids such as sulphonic acids. In other preferred embodiments the phenol formaldehyde resin comprises 2,2bis-(bromomethyl)-propandiol-1,3 and/or 2, 3 - dibromo propanol-1. 25 According to another aspect of. the present invention there is provided a method for preparing a composition according to the present invention comprising adding at least one of the compounds of the given formula before, during or after production of the phenol formaldehyde resin. 30 According to a further aspect of the present invention there is provided an article manufactured from the composition of the present invention. Preferably the article is a device, container or pipe. Various preferred features and embodiments of the present invention will now be described by way of non-limiting example by reference to the following Examples:
Exam.ple 1 To produce a mouldable material in accordance with one embodiment of the present invention, a commercially available phenol formaldehyde single stage resin is used having a mole ratio of phenol to formaldehyde of 1 to 1.5, a viscosity of approx. 8000 mPas at 25'C, a pH-value of 7.2 and a water content of approx. 14 % by weight.
kg of this phenol formaldehyde single stage resin is mixed uniformly in a kneading apparatus with 0.35 kg 2,3-dibromo propanol-1, 6 kg mica, 0.08 kg magnesium oxide, 2.5 kg glass fibres having an average length of 10 mm and 0.5 g of a commercially available thickening agent. A rectangular solid is shaped from the dough-like mass measuring 300 x 180 x 150 mm, and is hardened at a temperature of 14WC and at a pressure of 8 bar over a period of time of about 7 hours.
After hardening and cooling, the rectangular solid is cut through the centre, so that two test pieces are produced measuring 150 x 180 x 150 mm. Both test pieces undergo a test where there are three temperature changes, consisting of 16 hours storage at 14WC and then 8 hours storage at 231C.
After the temperature change test has been completed, no cracks are to be seen on either of the test pieces.
In contrast, two test pieces which are produced and tested in the same way as above, but which do not contain any 2,3-dibromo propanol-1 have several cracks.
Example 2
10 kg commercially available phenol formaldehyde single stage resin from Example 1 is mixed homogeneously in a kneading apparatus with 0.25 kg 2,2-bis-(bromomethyl)-propandiol-1,3, 5 kg mica, 0.07 kg magnesium oxide, 2.0 kg glass fibres with an average length of 10 mm, 1.3 kg carbon fibres having an average length of 6 mm and 0.7 kg of a commercially available thickening agent.
In the same way as described in Example 1, two test pieces are produced from the doughy mass measuring 150 x 180 x 150 mm, and are subjected to the test with three temperature changes, as in Example 1.
After the temperature change test is completed, no cracks are to be seen.
