Abstract

A numberplate has an integral section 2 of the numberplate which is attached by a releasable securement to the body of the numberplate 1 by the attraction between a magnetic surface on the detachable, integral section and a laminated magnetic surface 4, attached to the rear of the aperture in the numberplate body, sandwiched between a backing plate and a reflective film 6 which is exposed by the removal of section 2. This release is facilitated by inserting a levering object or tool between the recess 7 in the main body of the numberplate and the lip 8 in the detachable section 2. <IMAGE>

Description

ANTI THEFT VEHICLE NUMBERPLATE This invention relates to an anti theft vehicle number plats.
Number plates are well known panels upon which combinations of letters and numbers are displayed.
Number plates are secured to vehicles by fasteners and are used to identify ownership of vehicles.
According to the present invention there is provided a detachable section of the numberplate intersecting displayed characters on the numberplate and means for a releasable securement of the section in the body of the plate.
A specific ambodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which : Figure 1 shows in perspective, the numberplate with the detachable section secured in the body of the numberplate.
Figure 2 illustrates the numberplate body with the section having been detached from the body of the numberplate.
Figure 3 illustrates the numberplate section which has been removed.
Referring to the drawing, the removable section comprises a rectangular panel forming an integral part of the complete plate, attached for example by magnetic tape, one layer of tape being laminated to the rear surface of the detachable section. The second layer of tape is attached to the body of the numberplate, being laminated between a reflective surface and a backing plate behind the aperture from which the section has been removed, thus allowing for a magnetic attraction between the two adjacent surfaces when the section is located in the aperture in the body. The backing plate is secured to the back of the numberplate by fasteners or a fixing medium (e.g. adhesive).
In order to remove the section of the numberplate from the body of the numberplate a small lip is provided to enable a levering object or tool (e.g. A key), to be inserted between the lip on the detachable section and the recess in the body at the interface of the section and the retaining aperture in the numberplate body. A levering action enables the section to be prised away overcoming the magnetic attraction between the two magnetic surfaces allowing the section to be released and removed.
In order to replace the section into the body of the numberplate the section is positioned in its correct relative position to the body of the numberplate allowing for the magnetic attraction between the two surfaces to draw the section into the rectangular aperture to provide relocation of the section back into the aperture in the numberplate body.

Claims (4)

1. A removable integral section of a numberplate which intersects characters on the numberplate and means for providing attachment of the section to and release from the numberplate.
2. A removable integral section of a numberplate as claimed in Claim 1, whereas means of attachment are provided by attracting layers of laminated magnetic material.
3. A removable integral section of a numberplate as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2, whereas the visible surface exposed in the aperture by the removal of the section of the numberplate, is a reflective surface.
4. A removable integral section of a numberplate as described herein with reference to figures 1 - 4 of the accompanying drawings.
