Description

BELT CONVEYOR 226513 1 The present invention relates to a belt conveyor,
especially for bulk material.
Belt conveyors for bulk material can be, in particular, parts of equipment for the loading or unloading of ships or for transposition of bulk material at storage locations. In equipment of that kind, a single belt conveyor can be used as conveying means and can have a base belt which is continued as a quay belt or bearing place belt.
It has proved that the transition region in the conveying path between a vertical conveying section on land and a quay belt or a storage place belt, in both forward and reverse directions of conveying, requires particular attention. It is possible in principle to deflect the loaded cover and base belts of a belt conveyor by way of a guide drum or by way of. a number of carrier rollers arranged on an arc in such a manner that the l.oop forces of the base belt, which are directed towards the centre of - deflection, bear by way of the conveyed material and the cover belt onto the guide drum or the carrier rollers. However, when the loop tension forces in the base belt are high, which is the case particularly for long loop belts, this simple belt guidance gives rise to problems. The conveyed material is in that case exposed to high pressures and the belts are subjected to high local loadings and additional expansions which are due to non-uniform and geometrically variable loading and also to partial embedding of large material particles. Premature wear and damage of both belts can be the consequence.
There is therefore a need to improve belt deflection in this transition region so that the base passes from, for example, a horizontal conveying direction into a vertical conveying direction and conversely without conveyed material penetrating between the belt and the belt guide or drive elements.
According to the present invention there is provided a belt conveyor with a substantially horizontal section guided in fixed location and a substantially vertical section guided on a device movable in the direction of the horizontal section, wherein the vertically guided section forms the base belt of a cover belt conveyor comprising a base belt and a cover belt and wherein the conveyor belt loop forming the base belt is guided away from the conveying path in the region of the transition from the vertical section to the horizontal section so that conveyed material is discharged from the base belt, moves over a short track following a ballistic curve, is subsequently guided either from the vertical direction into the horizontal direction or from the horizontal direction into the vertical direction by a redirecting belt arranged in about the form of a quadrant of a circle and finally, again following a short track of a ballistic curve, is loaded onto the base belt guided through below the redirecting belt by drums, the cover belt, which covers the base belt in the vertical section, also covering the redirecting belt.
Preferably, the redirecting belt is guided on two belt drums of fixed location and a tensioning drum of variable location. The redirecting belt with its drums can be mounted on a displaceable carrier.
z - 3 Preferably, a transfer plate, which wipes on the base belt, is resiliently mounted between an upper drum of the redirecting belt and the vertical conveying section of the conveyor. Expediently, the belt drums of a forward run of the base belt underneath the redirecting belt are hydraulically or mechanically movable on guides by means of linear drives.
The redirecting belt can have an individual drive unit, or can be driven by a drive of the base belt. belt can be urged by tensioning means Alternatively, the redirecting against the cover belt in such a manner that the redirecting belt is moved by friction during the conveying of material or when ihe belt is empty.
For preference, the cover belt and the redirecting belt run at the same speed. Preferably, the belt drives are reversible in direction of rotation.
Embodiments of the present invention will now be more part i cularly described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a transition region in a belt conveyor embodying the invention, for upward conveying; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a transition region in a belt conveyor embodying the invention, for downward conveying; and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a transition region in a belt conveyor embodying the invention,for upward or downward conveying.
Fig. 1 shows a transition region in a belt conveyor 1, 2 during upward conveying (arrow direction) of conveyed material 3, in which a horizontally extending base belt 1 passes over into a cover belt vertical conveyor stage formed with the same belt. The base belt, laden with conveyed material, is raised by a discharging drum 8 arranged underneath the base belt, which until then extends almost horizontally. The conveyed material is thrown off and impinges on a downstream redirecting belt 13, which is covered by a cover belt 2. The base belt is further guided by drums 9, 10 and 11, while the redirecting belt 13 is guided by two drums 14 and a further drum 15.
The cover belt 2 and the redirecting belt 3 run at the same speed as the base belt 1. The redirecting belt 13 can be driven by one of the drums 14 or by one of the drums 8 and 9. The redirecting belt can be constructed with or without carrier rollers. It is tensioned by the drum 15, the drums 14 being arranged in fixed locations. Af ter running through a loading device, the base belt 1 is deflected by a drum 12 and laid against dished upper belt carrier rollers. Its return run runs on the usually also dished lower belt carrier rollers.
The cover belt conveyor at the lower end forms a throat 20 receiving the material 3 thrown off the belt 1 at the drum 8. The carrier rollers arranged in that part of the cover belt 2 which leads obliquely upwards can be mounted to be fixed or resiliently yielding.
The carrier rollers which urge the cover belt 2 in the vertical part against the conveyed material can be arranged to be fixed if the cover belt 2 is a foam belt or otherwise be mounted to be resiliently yielding. The returning empty run of the cover belt 2 is guided by is - carrier rollers arranged at a greater spacing. The base belt -1, acting as a quay belt or storage place belt, is supported against the pressure of the carrier rollers by dished or straight carrier rollers in the vertical part of the cover belt conveyor. These carrier rollers can be fixed or, like the carrier rollers of the cover belt 2, be mounted to be yielding.
The return runs of both belts 1, 2 are guided at the inside through the same carrier rollers as those compressing the strand of conveyed material and at the outside by additional carrier rollers at greater spacings.
The path portions between the drums 8 and 11 of the base belt 1 and the respectively adjacent drums 14 of the redirecting belt 13 are each. bridged over by a respective plate 19, which wipes on the base belt and is disposed at the carrier structure (not shown) of the loading device. These plates shall be so arranged that the bulk material normally does not touch them. However, they serve to prevent small quantities of trickling stock from constantly being lost from the flow and collecting as contaminations.
The transition region from the vertically arranged cover belt conveyor in the case of downward conveying (arrow direction) onto the base belt 1. for example storage place belt or quay belt, is illustrated in Fig. 2.
The conveyed material 3 is conveyed downwardly on the base belt 1 of the cover belt conveyor and passes to a redirecting belt 13 in the region of deflection from the vertical direction into the horizontal direction and is subsequently thrown off onto the horizontal section of the base belt.
- 6 The redirecting belt 13 can be constructed with or without carrier rollers. It runs around two guide drums 14 of fixed location and can have its own drum drive or be driven from the drum 10 of the base belt. A drum 15 serves for tensioning of the redirecting belt.
The redirecting belt can also be constructed without an own drive, since it is urged by the tensioning drum against the cover belt both when empty and when laden and is thus able to be moved along by this through friction.
The return run of the base belt 1 is guided into the horizontal section in the region of the belt deflection by two deflecting drums 12 in upward direction and by two drums 10 and 11 in downward direction.
The bulk material 3 is thrown off onto the base belt 1 at the exit from the downwardly conveying cover belt conveyor stage, this exit here formed by the redirecting belt 13 and the end of a cover belt 2.
The carrier roller guidance of the belt conveyor is analogous to that described for Fig. 1.
The transition region of a belt conveyor 1, 2 with arrangements for selectable conveying of material in upward direction and downward direction is illustrated in Fig. 3.
Solid lines signify conveying in upward direction and dashed lines signify conveying in downward direction.
The transition from horizontal conveying to vertical conveying or vice versa is possible through linear displacement of the belt drums 8, 9 and 10 from the operative position to a waiting position, denoted by 8', 9' and-101. In addition, the redirecting belt 13, the guide drums 14 and the tensioning drum 15 are displaced into the positions 131, 14' and 151, and the lower part of the cover belt 2 is lowered.
The drums 8 and 9 are disposed in the righthand positions, i.e.
the operative positions,during conveying in upward direction. During conveying in downward direction, the drums 8 and 9 are displaced into the lefthand waiting positions 8' and 9' shown in dashed lines. In order that the drum 8 can be brought into the waiting position W,the drum 10 must briefly be brought into the shunting position 101. The drums 8, 9 and 10 are arranged to be movable on guides 16, 17 and 18 by linear drives, such as hydraulic piston cylinder units or cable drives.
The redirecting belt 13 with i. ts guide drums and the tensioning drum 15 and drum drive is mounted on a frame or carrier structure (not shown), which is displaceable as a whole.
The carrier rollers 7 for the lower part of the cover belt are redisposed together with the lower guide drum 4 of the cover belt on a carrier structure 6, which is pivotable about a bearing 7a.

Claims (15)

  1. CLAIMS is 1. A belt conveyor defining a conveying path with a
    substantially horizontal first section, a substantially vertical second section and atransition section between the first and second sections, the conveyor comprising a base conveying belt extending in the first and second sections of the conveying path and guided away from the path in the region of the transition section so that material conveyed by the base belt is discharged therefrom along a determined track into the transition section, a redirecting belt extending in the transition section of the conveying path and arranged to receive material discharged from the base belt, to convey the material through the transition section and discharge the material along a determined track for reception again by the base belt, and a cover belt extending in the second and transition sections of the conveying path for cooperation with the base and redirecting belts in the conveying of the material.
  2. 2. A conveyor as claimed in claim 1, wherein the first section of the conveying path is disposed in a fixed location and the second section of the conveying path is disposed in a part of the conveyor movable relative to the fixed location.
  3. 3. A conveyor as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2, wherein at least one of the determined tracks has substantially the form of a ballistic curve.
  4. 4. A conveyor as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the redirecting belt has a conveying run extending over substantially a quadrant of a circle.
  5. 5. A conveyor as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the redirecting belt is guided by two drums of fixed location and a tensioning drum of variable location.
  6. 6. A conveyor as claimed in claim 2, wherein the redirecting belt and the associated drums are arranged in a displaceable carrier.
  7. 7. A conveyor as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, comprising a resiliently mounted transfer plate extending between the base belt and the redirecting belt in the region of a junction of the second and transition sections of the conveying path.

  8. 8. A conveyor as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the base belt is guided below the redirecting belt by a plurality of guide drums of variable location.
  9. 9. A conveyor as claimed in claim 8, wherein the guide drums are hydraulically or mechanically movable along guides by means of linear drives.
  10. 10. A conveyor as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, comprising a drive unit respective to the redirecting belt.
  11. 11. A conveyor as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 9, comprising a drive unit common to both the base belt and the redirecting belt.
  12. 12. A conveyor as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 4, comprising belt tensioning means arranged to so urge the redirecting belt towards the cover belt that the redirecting belt is moved by friction during operation of the conveyor when conveying material and when empty.
  13. 13. A conveyor as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 11, comprising means to cause the redirecting belt and the cover belt to run at the same speed.
  14. 14. A conveyor as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, comprising means to effect reversal of the direction Of movement of the belts.
  15. 15. A belt conveyor substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to any one of Figs. 1 to 3 of the accompanying drawings.
