Abstract

In use, a push-in expansible sleeve having a head is inserted in an opening in a carrier plate and a screw is then screwed into the push-in sleeve, to expand the end of the sleeve projecting from the plate, the sleeve comprising a slot (4), and a slot (6) at right angles to it. The ends (7, 8) of the slots (4, 6) extend at least as far as each other, and preferably overlap. The bore of the sleeve is unthreaded so that the screw cuts its own thread. The sleeve is resilient moulded plastics. <IMAGE>

Description

PUSH-TN NUT The invention relates to a push-in nut of the type that is inserted into an opening in a carrier plate and then receives a screw which is screwed in from the same side.
In a typical prior art arrangement, the bore is of such a size that the inside diameter is smaller than the outside diameter of the screw to be inserted so that, when the screw is screwed in, the screw itself cuts its thread in the wall of the bore and, in so doing, urges a divided shank portion laterally apart. When that happens, the outside walls of the shank portion are pressed firmly against the edge of the opening in the carrier plate.
lt is found that that nut is unsatisfactory in that the bottom part of the shank portion cannot make any contribution to the anchoring effect. Instead, the operation of screwing in the screw is made still more difficult by virtue of the non-yielding bottom part of the shank portion, so that there is the risk that the screw is over-tightened and may then break or shear off.
According to the pressen invention, there is provided a push-in nut insertable into an opening in a carrier plate for then receiving a screw, the push-in nut comprising: a head portion for abutting against the carrier plate adiacent to the opening; and a shank portion insertable into the opening in the carrier plate, the shank portion being integrally connected to th head portion; the head and shank portions being pierced by a bore for receiving the thread of the screw; the head portion and the adjoining part of the shank portion being divided by a first longitudinal slot which extends radially relative to the bare; and the free end of the shank portion being divided by a second longitudinal slot which (i) extends radially relative to the bare, (ii) is transverse to the first longitudinal slot and (iii) is deep enough to extend at least to the first longitudinal slot.
The present invention uses the lower part of the shank portion to improve the anchoring effect and the operation of screwing in the screw is facilitated.
That second slot not only improves the anchoring effect but also enables the push-in nut to be anchored equally well in thin and in thick carrier plates When dealing with thin plates, the projecting halves of the shank portion are spread far apart, whereby the holding force is considerably increased. When dealing with thick carrier plates, there is the advantage that the lower part of the shank portion is also pressed firmly against the wall of the opening in the carrier plate, so that in this case also the holding force is increased.
A non-limiting embodiment of a push-in nut according to the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a view of the embodiment of the push-in nut according to the invention in longitudinal section taken along line I-I in Figure 2; Figure 2 is a front view of the push-in nut; Figure 3 is a plan view of the push-in nut; Figure 4 shows the push-in nut being inserted into an opening in a thick carrier plate; Figure 5 shows the push-in nut inserted into the thick carrier plate, with a screw screwed therein; and Figure 6 shows the push-in nut inserted into a thin carrier plate, with a screw screwed in The push-in nut shown in the Figures is insertable into an opening 9 in a carrier plate 10 (see Figure 4) and receives a screw 11 which is to be screwed in from the same side (Figures 5 and 6), i.e the screw 11 is screwed in in the direction of insertion of the push-in nut into the opening 9 The push-in nut which is made from elastic plastics material comprises a head portion or plate 1 and a shank portion 2 which is moulded thereon and which is adapted to fit the opening 9 in the carrier plate 10.The head plate 1 and the shank portion 2 are pierced by a smooth bore 3 which serves to receive the thread of the screw, the inside diameter of the bore 3 being smaller than the outside diameter of the screw 11 so that, when the screw is screwed in, it cuts its own thread in the push-in nut.
The head plate 1 and the adjoining upper part of the shank portion 2 are divided by a longitudinal slot 4 which extends radially with respect to the bore 3, whereby the two upper halves of the shank portion are pressed laterally apart when the screw 11 is screwed in (see Figure 5). In that connection, the slot 4 is as narrow as possible so that as much shank portion material as possible is available for anchoring in the opening 9 in the plate.
So that the lower part of the shank portion can also be put to use to provide the anchoring effect, the shank portion 2 is divided, from its insertion end 5, by a further longitudinal slot 6 which extends radially relative to the bore 3. The slot 6 is cut at a right angle to the first longitudinal slot and its end 7 extends at least as far as the end 8 of the first-mentioned slot 4.In that way, when the screw 11 is screwed in, the two lower halves of the shank portion are also urged laterally away from each other (see Figure 6) lt is even more favourable, with regard to effective expansion of the shank portion 2 when the screw is screwed in, if the two slots 4 and 6 overlap each other at their ends 7 and 8 and if the slot 6 which begins at the insertion end 5 extends upwards into the region 2' of the shank portion, beneath the head plate 1.
It has been found that a push-in nut which is slotted from both ends in this way has a holding force, in the opening in the carrier plate, which is more than twice as great as a push-in nut which is equivalent in terms of material and cross-section but which has only one slot. The holding force of a push-in nut which is slotted from both ends is also equally good both when used in relation to thin and in relation to thicker carrier plates.
Finally it has been found that the double cross-wise slotting completely eliminates the risk of the screw being over-tightened and sheared off.
