Abstract

226,366. Atkinson, L. B. Dec. 21, 1923. Hygrometric apparatus.-A piece of porous material is saturated with a solution of salt, such as cobalt chloride, the colour of which depends on the humidity of the air, and the colour of the material is matched against a colour scale with which is associated a scale, of percentage humidities. In the form shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 4 the strip d of material is arranged' behind an aperture b in a card &c. a and the graded colour scale c is arranged adjacent the. edge of the aperture. The colours along the scale correspond to those assumed by the strip d at definite percentage humidities denoted on a scale e. To facilitate matching, a slotted cursor may be arranged to slide along the strip d and colour scale c. The card a may be enclosed in a metal sheath h, a layer i of waterproof material and a packing strip k being interposed between the strip d and the sheath. In the form shown in Fig. 6 the scale, c consists of a number of areas, each uniformly tinted and each having an aperture b<1> through which the sensitive strip is observed. The. number of such areas may be reduced to one when it is only desired to indicate a definite humidity. The device is particularly intended'to be used in incubators.
