Abstract

The invention relates to a switching means for use in an accumulator battery. A switch means (2) is located at the lowest level practicable with the battery housing (8), well below the level of the electrolyte (6). A conductor post (4) is connected through a switch (S) to a positive plate (10) and is provided with a conventional positive terminal (18). The switch (S) may be encapsulated to prevent acid attack, and may be operated by remote control. The switching means is operable to prevent power being drawn from the battery by unauthorised persons who, for example, may be tampering with a vehicle with the intention of starting its engine. <IMAGE>

Description

ACCUMULATOR BATTERY SWITCH MEANS The invention relates to means for switching electrical output of a storage battery or accumulator between an operative and an inoperative mode. The invention relates particularly, but not exclusively, to tamper-proof switching means for controlling of the output of a battery and thus of any device adapted to be operated thereby.
In many situations, there is a risk of theft or vandalism relating to the device in which an accumulator battery is installed.
An obvious example is that of the car or other vehicle where the battery is required for start-up purposes. The facility to deprive the device of the source of start-up power would render unauthorised tampering unsuccessful.
The invention therefore provides a switching means for use in a storage battery or accumulator comprising a container housing a plurality of cells, each cell containing an arrangement of a positive plate and negative plates, said cells being arranged in series or parallel to form parts of a circuit including a positive terminal of the battery and a negative terminal thereof, wherein there is provided in said circuit between said terminals a switch means to control the output of power from the battery, the switch means being positioned within the housing container at a level below the level to which the battery is filled by electrolyte in use.
Advantageously, the switch means which is operable by a suitable remotely controlled electronic, radio or similar device, may be positioned at the lowest level practicable in the electrolyte in order to maximise inaccessibility.
Conveniently, the positive terminal may comprise a rod secured to a positive plate of an end cell of the plurality of cells at a base portion thereof, said switch means being provided adjacent the plate base portion.
Alternatively, the switch means may be situated at a convenient position between intermediate ones of said cells.
It will be appreciated that the positioning of the switch means below the level of electrolyte in the battery makes tampering therewith an awkward task for a majority of car thieves. Where the vehicle driver has immobilised the electrical system, either fully or partially, by setting the switch means to an "off" position, attempts to reach the switch means will result in damage to the battery and/or loss of electrolyte.
There will now be described with reference to the drawings, an example of a switch means according to the invention. It will be understood that the description is given by way of example only and not by way of limitation.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a diagrammatic representation of the principle of the invention; and Figure 2 is a fragmentary view of a battery including a switch means according to the invention.
Figure 1 shows in diagrammatic form a six-cell storage battery or accumulator in which a switching device 2 has been inserted between the third and fourth cells. This device may be a remote controlled electronic device or may be radio controlled or indeed may comprise any suitable on/off, make/break contact device which in the present example is received in sealed, acid-resistant, leak-proof capsule. However, it will be understood that the provision of a capsule is not essential according to the materials and device selected, so that the switching parts are exposed to the electrolyte.
Figure 2 shows a glass capsule 4 in position in an accumulator battery, the switch device 5 being at a position well below the normal level 6 of electrolyte in a battery housing 8. The housing is shown broken away to expose one positive plate 10 and a corresponding negative plate assembly 12. A conductor port 14 is connected through the switch device S to a lower portion of the plate 10 by a connector bar 16 and is provided at the upper end thereof with a conventional positive terminal 18.
Various modifications may be made within the scope of the invention.

Claims (8)

CLAIMS:
1. A switching means for use in a storage battery or accumulator comprising a container housing a plurality of cells, each cell containing an arrangement of a positive plate and negative plates, said cells being arranged in series or parallel to form parts of a circuit including a positive terminal of the battery and a negative terminal thereof, wherein there is provided in said circuit between said terminals a switch means to control the output of power from the battery, the switch means being positioned within the housing container at a level below the level to which the battery is filled by electrolyte in use.
2. A switching means as claimed in claim 1, wherein there is further provided operating means to operate said switch means to provide or prevent the output of power from the battery, said switch means comprising a remotely controlled device positioned at the lowest practicable level in the housing.
3. A switching means as claimed in claim 2, wherein the device is controlled by electronic means, radio or ultra-sonic signals.
4. A switching means as claimed in any-one of the preceding claims wherein said positive terminal comprises a rod secured to a positive plate of an end cell of the plurality of cells.
5. A switching means as claimed in claim 4, wherein the rod is secured to a base portion of said plate, the switch means being situated adjacent the plate base portion.
6. A switching means as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein said switch means is situated between adjacent ones of said cells.
7. A switching means as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the switch means is sealed within a protective capsule which is acid-resistant and leak-proof.
8. A switching means for use in a storage battery or accumulator, construction and arranged substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as shown in the drawings.
