Abstract

A booster seat and container comprises a base (12) and a seat portion (14) which are hingedly secured together. The combined seat and container includes a carrying handle comprising two portions (20, 22) which can be moved between a position in which the portions define a handle and a further position in which the portions (20, 22) enable the seat to be scoured in position in a vehicle using a lap strap of the vehicle seat belt. The combined seat and container can also be provided with a shoulder strap (36). <IMAGE>

Description

BOOSTER SEAT CONTAINER The present invention is a cognate of my applications nos.
9125946.5 and 9203741.5 the contents of which are hereby incorporated by ray of reference.
The present invention relates to a booster seat for use by children hen travelling in a vehicle and wearing an adult seat belt.
The invention can also be used as a school type case or other container suitable for use by children in order to carry personal ires.
The present invention sees to provide a booster seat which can he readily secured within a vehicle and which can be carried by hand or over the shoulder of the user.
Accordingly the present invention provides a booster seat and container comprising a seat portion and a base portion, the portions together defining an enclosed space.
The two portions can be engageable together to define the enclosed space and the two portions can be hingedly engageable together.
The base can be divided into a number of compartments at least one of which is insulated.
The seat can have a handle which is moveable between two positions in which in a first position the handle can be engaged by the lapstrap of the car seat belt and in a second position in which the handle can be used for carrying the seat.
The handle can be formed in two parts each part being rotatable about a pivot.
The handle can have locking means enabling the handle to be secured in either one of the two positions.
The seat can have a carrying strap which can be formed in two parts secured together by a buckle.
The buckle can be provided with means defining a slot in which the diagonal belt of a car seat belt can be engaged.
The strap can be variable in length.
The present invention will now be more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which Fig 1 shows a plan view of one for of seat and container configured as a container, Fig 1k shows a side elevation of the container shown in Fig 1, Fig 2 shows the seat and container of Figs 1 and 1k configured as a seat, Fig 2A shows a side elevation of the seat shown in Fig 2, Fig 3 shos a detail in perspective of part of the handle of the seat an container shon in Figs 1 and 2, Fig 4 shows the seat of Figs 2 and 2A. secured in position in a vehicle, Fig S shows a further for of a seat and container configured as a container and including a carrying strap, Fig 6 shows a detail of the carrying strap shown in Fig 5, Fig 7 shows a retail of the handle of the seat and container shown in Fig , Fig 3 shows the seat of Fig 5 secured in position in a vehicle, Fig 9 shows a side elevation of the container shown in Fig 5, Fig 10 shows the container of Fig 5 with the seat portion open, Fig 11 shows a further form of booster seat and container according to the present invention with an alternative form of handle, Fig 12 shows a detail of the handle shown in Fig 11 in a first position, and Fig 13 shows the handle of the seat shown in Fig 11 in a second position.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown a seat and container (10) formed in two halves namely a base portion (12) and a seat portion (14) which are hinged together along edge (16).
On the edge opposite the edge (16) a catch (18) is provided to hold the two portions together in the closed position.
A carrying handle is formed of two portions (20) and (22).
Each portion (20, 22) is pivotally mounted on a chamfered surface (24) and (26) respectively on the portion (12).
The portions (20) and (22) are provided with means such as stops to define the limits of the movements of these portions.
Also the portions (20) and (n2) can be provided with locking neans to ensure that the portions remain in the position desired. The locking means can be provided with a release mechanism to enable the portions (20, 22) to be moved between the desired positions.
The arrangement shown in Figs 1 and 1A illustrate the use of the seat and container configured as a container.
In order t se the arranyemenf s a booster seat the portions (20; and !2r, are rctated about their pivots to the position shown in Figs 2 and 2A. The booster seat can then be secured in a vehicle as illustrated in Fig 4 in which each portion (23) and (30) of a vehicle seat belt is shown located between the portions (22) and (24) of the handle and the booster seat.
The portions (28) and (30) are joined together by a conventional buckle !32) and Fig 4 also shows the diagonal strap (34) of the seat belt.
Referring now to Figs 5 - 10 there is shown an embodiment of the invention in which the booster seat and container incorporates a carrying strap (36) where the remaining corponents of the booster seat and container are similar to that described above with reference to Figs 1, 1A, 2 and 2A.
The strap (35) is formed in two parts, (38) and (40), each made fro a flexible material attached to the corners of the container and at the same end as the carrying handles. The free ends of the strap portions (38) and (40) are joined together by a latching device (42) which has an adjuster (44).
The latching device (42) and the adjuster (44) each have projections (42A) and (44A) which between them define an open sided slot (46).
Referring to Fig 8 it will be seen that the diagonal strap of the seat belt (34) is located in the slot (46) and thus the position of the diagonal strap (34) can be adjusted relative to the user by adjustiny the length of the portion (40) using the adjuster (44).
The booster seat and handles are principally of a plastics material construction. The shape and internal structure are so designed so as to render the container robust enough to withstand the general usage and dynamic effects expected.
All or part of the internal surface of the container is lined with an insulating material (48) (Fig 9).
Referring to Figs 11 - 13 there is shown an alternative form of handle (50) to that described with reference to the above embodiments of the invention.
The handle (50) coraprises a cross bar (52) mounted between two pivoted cranks (-aj and (56).
As shown in Figs 11 and 12 the handle (50j is configured in the carrying position.
In order fo the container to be used as a seat the handle (50) is pivoted to the position shown in Fig 13 so that the projections (54A) and (56A, not shown) provide means whereby the lap potions of the seat belt of a vehicle can be used to secure the booster seat in position in a vehicle.
It will be appreciated that a booster seat and container according to the present invention provides both a booster seat for use b a child in a vehicle using the adult seat belt and a container which can he used for example as a lunch box or other container for- use by a child for carrying items between school and hone, or other purposes.
