Abstract
Making a video recording by taking a first video recording 10 of a subject on a background, generating a signal from the recording, feeding the signal through an electronic processing means 11 which analyses the signal and removed from the signal those parts of the signal relating to the background, and mixing the remainder of the first signal which relates to the subject, with a further signal generated from a second video recording 12 to generate a mixed recording signal, and recording the mixed recording signal on a recording medium 13. <IMAGE>
Description
Title: "Method of making a video recording" Descrition of the Invention
This invention relates to a method of making a video recording.
According to the invention we provide a method of making a video recording comprising the steps of taking a first video recording of a subject on a background, generating a signal from the recording feeding the signal through electronic processing means which analyses the signal and removes from the signal those parts of the signal relating to the background and mixing the remainder of the first signal which relates to the subject, with a further signal generated from a second video recording to generate a mixed recording signal, and recording the mixed recording signal on a recording medium.
In one example, the first video recording may feature a person such as a child as the subject, performing before a plain background. The electronic processing means may remove the background from the first signal by recognising those parts of the generated signal relating to the background and over-writing those parts of the first signal relating to the background with blank picture information.
If the background is of a plain colour, this facilitates the electronic processing means recognising the parts of the first signal generated from the first recording s evllich relate to the background.
Thus the first signal generated from the first video recording mQ comprise a raster signal.
The electronic processing means which analyses the first signal and removes those parts of the first signal relating to the background, may thus conveniently comprise a digital processing means which is able to process the raster signal.
The further signal may comprise a second signal which has been processed kx electronic processing means to remove parts of the second signal into which it is desired to place the remainder of the first signal relating to the subject, thereby to mix the signals. For example the electronic processing means may over-write the parts of the second signal into which it is desired to write the remainder of the first signal relating to the subject, with blank picture information. Conveniently therefore the further signal may also comprise a raster signal.
Alternatively, the mixing means may over-write the further signal to write the remainder of the first signal relating to the subject onto the further signal to superimpose a recording of the subject on the second video recording.
Mixing of the signals may be achieved using the computer means and mixing is preferably facilitated by the computer means being adapted to display the first and/or second and/or mixed video recording(s) on a monitor screen.
The first video recording may be provided on a video tape, a video disc or any other recording medium. The second video recording may likewise be provided on a video tape, video disc or any other recording medium.
The method of the invention may include making the first and/or second video recording(s) using a video camera means.
The recording medium onto which the mixed recording signal is recorded may comprise a video tape, video disc or any other such recording medium.
The invention will be better understood with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a diagrammatic illustration of an apparatus which may be used to perform the method of the invention.
Referring to the drawing, a first video recording (hereafter called the "subject video" recording) is indicated at 10, and may be provided on a video tape, video disc, or any other suitable video recording medium.
Preferably the "subject video" recording comprises a video recording of a subject such as a child or other person, or an animal for examples, performing in front of a plain background, for example a blue background.
The video recording thus made is played on an appropriate plying machine, and the raster signal generated is fed to a processing and mixing means indicated at 11.
The processing and mixing means 11 preferably comprises a digital processor which receives the raster signal generated from the subject video recording 10 and analyses the raster signal to identify those parts of the raster signal relating to the subject, and those parts of the raster signal relating to the background. The processing means 11 removes from the signal those parts which relate to the background. Thus may be achieved by any known technique, for example Qv over-writing those parts of the signal relating to the background, with blank picture information.
Simultaneously, a raster signal generated from a second video recording (hereinafter called the "source video" recording) 12 is also fed to the processing means 11.
The source video recording may be provided on a video tape, a video disc or any other appropriate recording medium, and may for example feature a cartoon or any other pre-recorded series of visual images.
The processing means 11 is then utilised to mix the remaining parts of the signal from the subject video recording 10, and the signal generated from the source X ideo recording 12, to generate a mixed recording signal which is used to make a further video recording 13, on a video tape, video disc or any other video recording medium.
To assist in the mixing process, the processing means 11 includes a monitor screen 14 on which may be displayed simultaneously or separately, the subJect video recording 10, the source video recording 12, or the mixed video recording 13.
Mixing of the signals from the subject video recording 10 and the source video recording 12 may be achieved by any known technique.
For example, in one arrangement, a second signal generated from the source video recording 12 may be processed by the computer means 11, to obliterate from the signal parts of the signal in which it is desired to write parts of the remainder of the source video recording signal. For example the processing means 11 may over-write those parts of the signal from the source video recording 12, with blank picture information, thereby to produce a further signal which is mixed with the processed signal generated from the subject video recording 10.
In a second example, the signal generated from the source video recording 12 may simply be over-written with the remainder of the subject video recording, by writing the remaining parts of the subject video recording 10 over those parts of the further signal generated from the source video recording 12 where it is desired to superimpose an image of the subject.
It is envisaged that the method of the invention may be performed to enable a image of a child of the first video recording 10, to be superimposed upon a selected favourite cartoon feature embodied in the source video recording 12 although the invention has other applications.
By virtue of using a digital processing means 11 to process and mix signals, it will be appreciated that the signals from the subject video recording 10, and the source video recording 12, may be manipulated as desired.
The features disclosed in the foregoing description, or the accompanying drawings, expressed in their specific forms or in the terms or means for performing the desired function, or a method or process for attaining the disclosed result, may, separately or in any combination of such features, be utilised for realising the invention in diverse forms thereof.
