Abstract

A generally cuboidal carton (10) has six faces of square or rectangular shape with two end faces (1) each comprising an upper (2) and lower (3) retaining strip of sufficient width to retain containers such as bottles or cans without the carton. The bottom strip (3) is additionally sufficiently wide to cover the bar code marking conventionally located at the base of such containers. The two strips 2 and 3 co-operate to form an aperture providing a clear view of the contents within the carton. <IMAGE>

Description

"Packaaina for Containers" This invention relates to packaging for containers such as bottles and cans. The invention is particularly although not exclusively suited to the packaging of multiple cans of beverage or food within a single pack for marketing purposes.
The packaging of multiple cans of beverage within a single pack is desirable for several reasons. It makes the product easier to store and transport and more sales may result than if the cans were sold separately.
Prior art practice includes the enclosure of multiple cans within a cardboard carton or box, the fixing of multiple cans together at the rim using conjoining transparent plastic rings and the shrink wrapping of multiple cans in transparent plastic.
Marketing analysis indicates that a more favourable response is likely towards a product if it is in direct view and not completely enclosed within a carton or box. The last two packaging methods described above are attempts to address this problem but have associated problems themselves.
Bar code indicators on retail products convey information on the quality and price of the article.
Therefore, to avoid confusion over the price of, say, a six can pack of beverage, if the cans are to be packaged in transparent plastic they must be labelled with distinct bar codes indicating that they are part of the pack, or must be packaged in a carton that substantially covers the cans and has its own bar code indicating the quantity of the cans and the price of the pack.
The first of these solutions requires additional steps in the canning production line and the second is inconsistent with the marketing theory concerning a clearly visible product.
According to the invention there is provided a packaging for containers comprising a generally cuboidal carton, each face of said carton having a generally rectangular shape, a pair of faces forming respectively a base and top for the carton, at least one of the remaining faces comprising a pair of retaining strips at opposing edges to retain containers within -the carton, one of said strips being arranged to cover the bar code on the containers and both strips co-operating to provide an aperture in the face of the carton providing exposure of part of the containers in the carton.
The top face of the carton preferably includes means for forming carrying handles for the carton.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, opposed end faces of the carton each include a pair of retaining strips.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a perspective view of a carton according to the present invention.
Referring to the drawing, packaging in accordance with the present invention comprises a generally cuboidal carton 10 having six faces of square or rectangular shape with two end faces 1 each comprising an upper 2 and lower 3 retaining strip of sufficient width to retain containers such as bottles or cans within the carton. The bottom strip 3 additionally being sufficiently wide to cover the bar code marking conventionally located at the bottom of such containers. The two strips 2 and 3 co-operating to form an aperture providing a clear view of the contents within the carton.
The top face 4 incorporates push-out tabs 5 which occlude holes that can act as a carrying handle for the carton.
The overall construction is robust enough to support the weight of the containers when suspended by this handle.
Modifications and improvements may be incorporated without departing from the scope of the invention.
