Description
LUGGAGE RACK
This invention concerns a luggage rack for attachment to the tow bar of a vehicle.
According to the present invention there is provided a luggage rack for attachment to the tow bar of a vehicle comprising support means securable to the tow bar of the vehicle and mounting hingedly connected shelf means deployable between generally horizontal and vertical operative and stowed positions respectively.
The cupport means may include a base plate adapted to fit around the tow ball and be bolted te the tow bar, said base plate mounting a connecting frame, mounting means vertically adjustable on the connecting frame and to which the shelf means is slidably and hingedly connected.
The invention will be further apparent from the following description, with reference to the several figures of the accompanying drawings, which show, by way of example only, one form of luggage rack embodying same.
Cf the drawings : Figure 1 shows a rear view of the rack;
Figure 2 shows a side elevation of the rack; and Figure 3 shows a plan view of the shelf means
of the rack of figure 1.
Referring now to the drawings, it will be seen that the luggage rack 10 comprises a base plate 11 adapted to fit around the tow ball 14 of the tow bar with holes 12 for securing same to the tow bar by means of nuts and bolts 13.
Vertical tubular members 15a and 15b attached te the base plate 11 telescopicalJy receive a vertical rectangular connecting frame 16. The connecting frame 16 comprises a ladder-like structure for increased strength.
The connecting frame 16 is secured in the tubular members 15a and 15b by thumb-screws 17.
The tubular members 18a and 18b telescopically engage the upper end of the connecting frame 16 and are slidable thereon for securement at any desired position by thumb-screws 19, thereby allowing the height of the rack 10 to be adjusted.
Mounting means in the form of a vertical frame member is mounted on the tubular members 18a and 18b and comprises a generally U-shaped member 20 having upstanding limbs 21a and 21b with horizontal connecting bars 22a and 22b. The upper ends of the limbs 21a and 21b slidably and hingedly support shelf means 27 by screw-fittings 23a and 23b.
The shelf means 27 comprises a rectangular frame 27a and three spaced rods 27b connecting the forward and rearward edges of the frame 27a.
The screw-fittings 23a and 23b engage the outer wo of the rods 27b.
In this way the distance of the forward edge of the shelf means 27 from the rear of the vehicle is adjustable to accommodate different sized loads or to allow access to the boot of the vehicle.
A support strut member 24 comprising a bar 28 slidably and hingedly connected to shelf means 27 by a screw-fitting 26 engaging the centre of the rods 27b is telescopically received by a tubular member 29 which is hingedly connected at 25 to the connecting bar 22a of the vertical frame member of the mounting means. The bar 28 may be secured at a desired position within the member 29 by a screw 30. The support strut 24 can be positioned as desired within certain limits beneath the shelf means 27 to support the load optimally.
When the rack 10 is not in use, support strut 24 slides towards the rear of the vehicle to allow the shelf means 27 to depend vertically for storage.
The mounting means and shelf means 27 may be completely removed by a simple lifting operation from the connecting frame 16 by loosening screws 19 on tubular members 18a and 18b for storage when desired.
It will be appreciated that it is not intended to limit the invention to the above example only, many variations, such as might readily occur to one skilled n the art, being possible, without departing from the scope thereof.
