Abstract

A metal detector (50) comprises a coiled conductor (12) located within a metal enclosure (14) operative to provide an a.c. generated primary electromagnetic field. Metal screening (26) is provided adjacent the coil so as to provide a secondary induced magnetic field (34) which opposes the primary electromagnetic field (32) so as to significantly reduce the metal free zone.
