Abstract

A multi-way tube connector for stress members has a two-piece body 3 and 5 which trap the flanged, flared, or swaged ends of the tubular stress members 1 by means of an annular groove 4 at the base of each radial bore when assembled with the clamp bolts 7, and locating bolt 6. <IMAGE>

Description

MULTI-WAY TUSE CONNECTOR FOR STRESS MEMBERS Other methods of construction, using tubular stress members, either employ - clamping the end of the tube by means of a split connector with only one clamp bolt to secure the connection, or - a locating bolt through both the connector and the tube, or - by a grub screw located in thp connector, tightening onto the wall of the tube.
Thess methods however, security is totally dependant on the tightness of the bolt or screw, quite often on a single point location or single line contact. Both methods are subject to failiure due to any sort of strain, vibration, or movement.
According to the present invention, the end of the tubular stress member has a flare, flange, or swage, which is trapped in the annular groove, half in the cap of the connector, and half in the collar of the connector. This flare, flangu, or swage, prevents failiure of the connection between the tube and the connector.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing: The tubes to be secured in the connector are inserted into the cap Fig. 3. until the flared, flanged, or swaged, end of the tube Fig. 1. is located in the annular grove Fig. 4. and hard against the shrust washer Fig. 2.. Then the retaining collar Fig. 5. is placed in position, and the locating bolt Fig. 6.
isinserted to assist assembly. The clamp bolts Fig. 7. are then inserted to complete the assembly.

Claims (2)

1. A multi-way tube connector for stress members comprising a moulded, cast, or forged, main body in two halves which, when assembled, have several radiating bores with an internal annular groove situated at the base of each bore. This groove enables the flare, flange, or swage on the end of the tubular stress member to be trapped and secure It also has a thrust washer in each annular groove to spread the load on copress- ion. It has a central locating bolt for ease of assernbly, and a c.lamp bolt between each pair of tubes for further security.
2. A multi-way tube connector for stress members as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the nut on the locating bolt is replaced by a ring nut to secure lifting apparatus, lighting equipment, etc..
