Abstract

An iron alloy comprises in percentage by weight: from 0.90 to 1.05 carbon, optionally from 0.3 to 0.4 manganese, optionally from 0.9 to 1.05 silicon, from 7 to 8 chromium, from 1.35 to 1.50 molybdenum, from 2 to 2.15 vanadium and from 0.8 to 0.95 tungsten, the balance being Fe. The alloy must comprise a phosphorus percentage less than or, at most, equal to 0.020 and a percentage of sulphur less than or, at most, equal to 0.010.

Description

1 - 2-1 11) ') 1) 1 Title: Alloy for Makinq Cold Working Tool Special
Steels The present invention relates to an alloy for making cold working tools.
As is known, f or making cold working tools such as moulds, punches, dies and the like, it is necessary to use steels having a great wear resistance and toughness.
The toughness or resistance of the material to impact f orces, i.e. dynamic loads and the like, is generally in contrast with the wear resistance; in other words, conventional steels for cold working tools having a good or high toughness usually have a reduced wear resistance. Thus, conventional steels used f or making cold working tools represent generally a compromise, since they cannot have very good characteristics both in toughness and wear resistance.
Other important characteristics of special steels for cold working tools are the workability and the compression resistance of sharp edges of the tools, which have an effect in producing high efficiency cold working tools.
The present invention seeks to provide an improved alloy f or cold working tools.
Accordingly, the present invention provides an alloy for making cold working tools, the alloy comprising the following substances alloyed with iron:
Substance Carbon Chromium Molybdenum Vanadium Tungsten % Range by Weight 0.90 to 1.05 7 to 8 1.35 to 1.5 2 to 2. 15 0.8 to 0.95 2 - In a preferred form of the present invention the alloy also includes the following:
Substance Manganese Silicon % Range by Weight 0.3 to 0.4 0.9 to 1.05 In the preferred alloy the percent by weight of phosphorus is advantageously less than or equal to 0.020, whilst that of sulphur is less than or, at most, equal to 0.010 by weight.
From performed experimental tests it has been found that the subject alloy has a very high toughness, together with remarkable wear resistance characteristics, which properties are particularly advantageous for making cold working tools.
In addition, with the subject alloy it is possible to make cold working tools having very high compression resistance values, at the sharp edges thereof, thereby drastically reducing possible damages during the use of these tools.
