Abstract

The device, for delivering active materials to the oral cavity, to the blood system via the oral, transdermal route, or locally to the teeth, gingivae or periodontium resembles a small cuff-link comprising two beads 3 and/or buttons 4 of active material (optionally together with a carrier). The beads/buttons are attached to each other by a thread which may be bio-degradable or soluble and which is inserted between two teeth such that one bead/ button rests against the front triangle between the teeth and gum while the second bead/button rests against the back triangle. The device may be used to treat gingivitis or periodontitis, or bad breath, or to administer drugs (such as NSAIDs and aspirin), vitamin A, sodium fluoride or caffeine or nicotine as an aid to break dependence. <IMAGE>

Description

DEVICE TO ADMINISTER ACTIVES OVER EXTENDED PERIODS.
This invention relates to a means of delivery of actives (medication or similar chemicals ).
The invention is a device to insert between the teeth to administer actives to and through the oral cavity over extended periods.
This is a device which is especially useful as a means to deliver active materials to the oral cavity, to the blood system via the oral, transdermal route, or locally to the teeth, gingivae or periodontium.
The device resembles a small cuff-link which comprises one or two beads 3 (or buttons 4 ) of active material or active material carrier which are attached to each other by a short (approximately 3mm) thread or threads 5 The device is inserted between two teeth in such a way that the linking thread is gently forced down to the gum margin where the space between the teeth increases a little. The placement results in one bead/ button resting against the front triangle between two teeth and the gum, the second bead / button resting against the back triangle between the same two teeth and the gum.
The actives could be therapeutic, pharmaceutical, or preventive, in that they could treat diseases of the teeth, gums etc.
The linking thread material may be beneficially chosen so as to be bio-degradable or soluble over a period. Such a period may be, for example: in the order of one hour for short term applications or treatments; of the order of ten hours for twice-daily applications; or of the order of one hundred hours for once- weekly applications. Once weekly would be suitable for actives requiring professional application and supervision, whereas at first sight twice-daily would be more suited to over-the-counter products.
It is a further extension to utilise this procedure to transmit trans-dermally for local treatment of diseases . The procedure may be used to penetrate to the central blood system with actives such as treatment drugs and non-steroidal antiinflammatory materials.
The device is particularly suitable for the treatment of local lesions, especially gingivitis and periodontitis.
The device may be used for "cosmetic" purposes, for example the treatment of bad breath.
The invention is a device to administer drugs, therapeutics, pain relievers etc.
A non-exclusive list of actives will include: Chlorhexidene derivatives; Triclosan; Taurolin; sodium fluoride; sodium monofluorophosphate; Vitamin A; cetyl pyridinium chloride; aspirin; Ibuprofen, ketoconazole; nystatin; tetracycline.
The device may also be used to administer chemicals such as caffeine, nicotine etc as treatment or as an aid to break a habit.

Claims (1)

1: A device essentially consisting of two bodies connected with a thread of such dimensions as to be able to sit either side of the dental arch so that the connecting thread sits on the gingivae between two teeth and the bodies rest on the gingiva either sice of the gingiva between two teeth similar to saddle bags. The purpose of the device is to localise, prolong and / or to ennance the application of pharmaceutical, therapeutic and coeretic agents to and via the oral cavity.
2: the device of Claim 1 wherein one or both bodies contain a drug or therapeutic, or cosmetic agent such as flavour, odour or deodorant when @@@ be released in a controlied manner by reaching cut into the saliva. The bodies may be @@@@@@d di@c@@@ or corroidal in shape and are porous or impervious in texture. They must be large enogh to avoid @@@@ pr@@@@aly of from their location (dreater traf.
@Zomm diameter, and may be normally up to 5mm diameter. In special cases they count exceed cmm diameter for short periods as large bodies will be uncomfortable to the user.
3: The device of Claim 1 wherein the material of the bodies is dissolved or bio-degraded so as to release active agents. 4: The device of Claim 1 in which the active agent is intended to be ingested, or to be delivered trans-dermainy through the oral mucosa, or to be delivered to the oral cavity to treat diseases of the oral cavity. Such diseases of the oral cavity to include caries, gingivitis, stomatitis, periodontitis and conditions such as halitosis and mouth ulcers.
5: The device of Claim 1 in which the options for actives include local anaesthetics, deconcentants, and antiinflammatories.
6: The active ingredients of claim 1 include agence such as thioruexidene deliveraves, friclosan, fitoriges, strontium salts, potasium salts suitable for trating sensitive dentine, anti-microbials, anti-luncate, anti-seras such as calcium carbonate, magnesia.
7: The device in Claim 1 is particularly suitable to carry medication dor the local treatment of gingivitis and periodontitis with actives such as thioruexidene salts and laurolin. Infolin can be applied via the device of claim 1 to negate the need for root plaining in the management of chronic periodontal tissue destruction.
It is also possible to beneficially modify the local pH and/or the redox potential of the gingival and periodontal tissues with simple materials such as calcium carbonate and oxygen @:avengers and vitamins. Vitamins A and C are of particular interese for to device of Claim 1.
@: The thread of Claim 1 could be biodegradable or slowly soluble so as to terminate the risk or itratation or inflammatory reaction caused by long term local reponse of the soft tissue. The device may be applied bby or under the supervision of a professional, or could be available freely for selt-application.
