Abstract
A child's safety seat for mounting on a passenger seat of a vehicle is secured in place by a safety belt (14) provided in the vehicle. To locate the safety belt clamping guides are provided each having a fixed bearing element (18), a fixed carrier element (19) and a wedge element (20). Adjacent faces (26) of the wedge and carrier elements are formed with complementary V-shaped cam profiles (26, 27). When the cam profiles are in their mean relative positions a seat belt may be inserted between the wedge element (20) and the bearing element (18). Lateral displacement of the wedge element (20) from its mean position. through interaction of the V-shaped profiles, causes the gap between the wedge and bearing elements (20, 18) to close so locking the seat belt (14) therebetween. <IMAGE>
Description
DESCRIPTION
CHILD'S SAFETY SEAT
This invention relates to a child's safety seat of the kind adapted for installation on a passenger seat of a vehicle and to be secured on that seat by a safety belt fitted in the vehicle at the passenger seat.
Safety seats of this kind are known which have guide means for locating the safety belts correctly relative to the safety seats as the belts are applied and subsequently secured to the safety seats. It is essential that when the safety belts are fastened the safety seats are securely anchored to the passenger seats against movement relative thereto.
According to a first aspect of the present invention a child's safety seat is provided which has guide means adapted to be clamped to a safety belt applied to the safety seat to secure the safety seat on a passenger seat of a vehicle for use, and comprising a relatively fixed element and a movable wedge element between which and the fixed element a portion of the safety belt can be passed, and which is movable relative to the fixed element longitudinally of said safety belt portion between an inoperative position, in which it is spaced from the fixed element sufficiently to permit said safety belt portion to pass freely between the elements, and an operative position, in which it is located more closely to the fixed element so as to cause said safety belt portion to be gripped between them.
According to a second aspect of the invention guide means as defined in the first aspect is provided as an attachment adapted to be applied to a child's safety seat.
Preferably the wedge element is arranged so that when it has a safety belt applied to it the direction in which it moves to the operative position corresponds to the direction in which the safety belt is urged as it is fastened to secure the safety seat. The wedge element is conveniently caused to be moved to the operative position by the tightening movement of the safety belt as it is fastened. Thus as the safety belt is tightened the guide means clamps onto the safety belt to hold the safety seat secure. Whilst the safety belt is fastened its tension continually urges the wedge element to the operative position so that the clamping action of the guide means is maintained.
The wedge element may have two operative positions to which it can be moved in opposite directions from the inoperative position, and in either one of which it can cause the safety belt portion to be gripped between the two elements. Such an arrangement has the advantage that the safety belt portion can be gripped whichever way it is urged relative to the two elements as it is fastened. Accordingly the guide means is not handed in its use. so that when, as is required in this country, the safety seat is installed on the rear seat of a vehicle, for example, the guide means will function effectively whichever side of the rear seat the safety seat is secured.
To aid the grip on the safety belt when the wedge element is in the, or either, operative position at least one of the elements preferably has a roughened face for engagement with the safety belt. The roughening may be by means of knurling, dimples, ribs or other suitable formations.
Movement of the wedge element towards the fixed element as it moves to the, or either, operative position may be caused by co-operating cam profiles or the like on the wedge element and a support for the wedge element. In such an arrangement the support is preferably fixed, and may be carried by the fixed element.
The guide means is preferably positioned on the safety seat to be engaged by a diagonally extending seat belt or portion such as would extend over a shoulder and the chest of a person using the seat belt. It may possibly be positioned to be used in conjunction with a seat belt or portion which is intended to be fastened over the lap of a person.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a front perspective view of a
child's safety seat in accordance with the present
invention;
Figure 2 is an enlarged side view of guide means
of the safety seat, and
Figure 3 is an enlarged inverted plan view of
the guide means.
In this embodiment the child's safety seat comprises a moulded plastics bucket-type seat proper 1 having a cushioned covering 2 extending over its front and sides, and a support frame 3 made of metal tubing on which the seat proper 1 is adjustably mounted so that the seat proper can be set at sitting and inclined reclining positions, as required.
The support frame 3 has a base portion 4 of a horizontal generally U-shape disposed with its web part 5 at the front of the seat and its side limbs 6 extending rearwards to upstanding legs 7 of the support frame. The seat proper I is pivotally connected towards the upper end of its back support 8, at pivots 9, to the upper ends of the legs 7. An adjustable length strut, not shown, connected to the underside of the seat proper and to a cross member 9' fixed to and extending between the side limbs 6 of the base portion 4, provides the means of adjusting the attitude of the seat proper on the support frame, the seat proper pivoting about the pivots 9.
The safety seat is designed to be mounted on a passenger seat of a vehicle and to be secured in position on the seat by a safety belt provided in the vehicle at the seat. To locate the safety belt guides 10, 11 and 12 are provided on the support frame. Guide 10 is provided on one side limb 6 of the support frame near the web part 5. Guides 11 are in the angles between the side limbs 6 and the legs 7.
The other guides 12 are clamping guides and are provided on the legs 7 of the support frame. Guides 10 and 11 are of narrow U-shape to receive the seat belt freely in them. Guides 11 receive the lap strap 13,
Figure 1, of the safety belt whereas one or other of the clamping guides 12, whichever is appropriate for the inclination of the diagonal strap 14, receives the diagonal strap to hold the safety seat against the back support of the passenger seat. The guides are incorporated in plastics components which are fixed to the support frame. Guides 11 and 12 at each side of the support frame are incorporated in a single component 15 having a gusset-like portion 16 which extends across the angle between the respective side limb 6 and leg 7 and contains the lap strap guide 11, and an extension portion 17 which extends along the leg and contains the clamping guide 12.
Each clamping guide comprises a fixed bearing element 18, a fixed carrier element 19 and a movable wedge element 20. These elements are elongated and extend longitudinally in front of the respective leg 7. The bearing element 18 is formed by a thickened side part of the extension portion 17 and the carrier element 19, which is spaced directly opposite the bearing element 18, extends parallel to the bearing element and is integrally joined at an upper end by a bridge part 21 to the extension portion 17. The wedge element 20 is carried by the carrier element 19, between the bearing and carrier elements. It is of block form of elongated rectangular cross-section with the longer sides of the section presented at the front and back faces 22 and 23 respectively of the component, and has a longitudinally extending undercut groove 24 opening to the back face 23. The carrier element 19 extends along the groove 24. Abutments 25 formed on the carrier element 19 at the opposite ends of the wedge element restrain the latter from moving longitudinally on the carrier element 19. The groove 24 is wider than the carrier element so as to permit some lateral movement of the wedge element relative to the carrier element.
The surface of the groove which is nearest to the front face 21 of the wedge element is formed with a concave symmetrical V-shaped cam profile 26, and the adjacent surface of the carrier element is formed as a complementary convex V-shaped cam profile 27. By the co-operation of these profiles the wedge element is caused to move towards the bearing element when it is moved laterally to either side of a centralised mean position on the carrier element. When the wedge element is in the mean position the gap between its front face 22 and the adjacent face of the bearing element 19, which is flat, is sufficiently wide to allow a seat belt to pass edgewise freely through it.
When the wedge element is moved laterally away from the mean position it narrows the gap such that a seat belt located in the gap will be gripped between the wedge element and the bearing element, and the clamping guide becomes locked to the seat belt.
The front face 22 of the wedge element is knurled to enhance its grip on the seat belt.
When the safety seat is mounted on a passenger seat for use it is secured by engaging the lap strap 13 of the associated seat belt in the guides 11, engaging the diagonal strap 14 in the appropriate one of the clamping guides 12, then pulling the belt tight and fastening it. As the belt is tensioned the drawing movement of the diagonal strap through the clamping guide causes the wedge element 20 to move laterally in the direction of the pull on the belt so that the belt is gripped and the clamping guide locks onto the belt to hold the safety seat securely on the passenger seat.
