Abstract

A method for the production of chitin/chitosan comprises harvesting stipes from mushroom growing and processing the harvested stipes e.g. with alkali to remove non-chitinous material therefrom.

Description

PRODUCTION OF CHITIN/CHITOSAN This invention relates to the production of chitin/chitosan.

Chitin and/or its deacetylated derivative chitosan (herein, chitin/chitosan means the one or the other or a mixture) are useful in numerous applications including wound dressing materials (where there is evidence of proactivity tending to accelerated healing), heavy metal recovery and general filtration.

Traditionally, chitin/ckitosan is harvested from crustacean sheils. More recently, microfungal hyphae have been proposed as a source, the microfungi being grown in culture or, as in the case of sporangiophores, on a culture-bearing substrate, like cress.

The present invention provides a novel source.

The invention comprises a method for the production of chitin/chitosan comprising harvesting stipes from mushroom growing and processing the harvested stipes to remove non-chitinous material therefrom.

The harvested stipes may be processed by treatment in alkali to remove proteinaceous material, which may also deacetylate chitin in the stipes to chitosan.

The alkali may be NaOH, and the stipes may be boiled in NaOH solution typically 2 molar boiled for one hour.

The processed stipes may be recovered as filamentous material, which is useful for incorporation into textile or textile-like structures for use in filters, would dressings, etc.

Methods for the production of chitin/chitosan according to the invention will now be described.

The methods comprise harvesting stipes from mushroom growing. By "mushroom in this context will be ordinarily understood the fungi Agaricus bisporus or A. campestris, which are produced in large quantities.

But also oyster mushrooms and other edible mushrooms will serve as raw material. The point is that at present the stipes are a waste product of commercial mushroom culture and the invention turns this waste product into useful chitin/chitosan.

The stipes are cut off from the harvested mushrooms, or the mushroom caps cut from the stipes which remain in the mushroom growing compost. In any event, the stipes are washed to free them from any adhering compost.

The washed stipes are then processed by treatment in an alkali, typically 2 molar NaOH, and may be boiled in such solution for half an hour. This treatment will partially deacetylate the chitin as well as remove proteinaceous material - which is highly desirable for example in the case of wound dressings where protein impurities could support bacterial infection. The resulting filamentous product may be washed in weak acid, such as acetic.

On the other hand, the chitin may be completely or more completely converted to chitosan by boiling under pressure or autoclaving in 50% NaOH for, say, four hours. While the product of this treatment is still filamentous, acidification with a weak, e.g. acetic, acid will dissolve it.

Chitosan may be precipitated out by adjustment of the pH back to alkaline. The precipitate can be washed with water to yield a substantially pure chitosan powder.

Claims (6)

1. A method for the production of chitin/chitosan comprising harvesting stipes from mushroom growing and processing the harvested stipes to remove non-chitinous material therefrom.
2. A method according to claim 1, in which the harvested stipes are processed by treatment in alkali to remove proteinaceous material.
3. A method according to claim 1 or claim 2, in ic th chitin in the stipes is deacetylated using alkali.
4. A method according to claim 2 or claim 3, in which the alkali is NaOH.
5. A method according to any one of claims 1 to 4, in which the harvested stipes are boiled in NaOH solution.
6. A method according to any one of claims 1 to 5, in which the processed stipes are recovered as filamentous material.
