Abstract
225,928. Trist, A. R. Sept. 10, 1923. Printing - surfaces. -Printing-plates, of the kind comprising ink-retaining areas and mercurial inkrepelling areas, have the mercurized metal forming the ink-repelling areas supported and maintained in place by a metal unaffected by mercury and suitable for forming the ink-retaining areas. In one manner of preparing the plate, a layer of nickel b, Fig. 2, is deposited electrolytically on an iron plate a and coated with a medium sensitive to light, such as bichromated fish glue, which is then exposed through a negative, washed, and baked in the usual manner to produce a pattern in resist, represented by the dots c. The surface b<1> is then etched between the dots c with perchloride of iron &c. to a depth of about half the thickness of the nickel layer b, and the parts removed by etching are filled up more or less by very thin alternate layers of electrolytically deposited copper and silver, as shown in Fig. 5. The dotted pattern c is now removed by a suitable alkali, such as a solution of sodium or potassium cyanide, and the plate treated with metallic mercury, resulting in amalgamated inkrepelling areas g, Fig. 8, supported and maintained in place by a floor and side walls formed in the nickel coating.
