Description
1 -1 ^ 1 1 ' -.. 3 j 1) j A LOCK WITH A HOUSING AND SLIDING BOLT WHICH IS
DISPLACEABLE THEREIN The invention relates to a lock, having a sliding bolt, which is mounted in a box-like housing, is guided by means of an actuating mechanism in an opening in a lateral wall of the housing and is displaceable from an unbolted position into a bolted position, wherein the sliding bolt is retained in the housing by means of a lock cover plate, wherein the actuating mechanism is accessible by means of an arresting pin via an opening in the lock cover plate, wherein the sliding bolt has at least one arm at the lock end, which arm engages around a control member, which is vertically displaceable relative to sliding bolt, at an end extending parallel to direction of displacement of the sliding bolt and is so connected to the control member and the arresting pin via a carrier pin and a slidable guide member that, when the arresting pin is displaced from an initial position, i.e. where it protrudes from the housing, into an operating position in the housing, the sliding bolt is displaced from the unbolted position into the bolted position, wherein, when the control member is displaced from the operating position into the initial position, the sliding bolt resumes its unbolted position, and wherein a locking pin of the control member is so guided in a tumbler with a control slide that the bolted position of the sliding bolt is releasable by the control member being lifted thereover.
the the A lock of such type is known from DE 35 04 806 C2. In this known lock, the arresting pin controls a control member, which is separated from the sliding bolt and is provided with the slidable guide members facing the arms of the sliding bolt. Carrier pins engage in said slidable guide members and are moulded to fit on the arms of the sliding bolt. The control member accommodates the arresting pin and is vertically displaced, together with said arresting pin, relative to the direction of displacement of the sliding bolt. In such case, the control member protrudes through the opening in the lock cover plate and, in consequence, determines with its cross-section the bore in the door, the rosette and the operating knob. Such an arrangement does not allow the operating knob and the rosette to fall below a predetermined dimension. Such a closure is bulky on a small door, such doors being commonly used, for example, in the caravan construction industry.
An object of the invention is to provide a lock of the initially mentioned type so that, with a simpler construction for the actuating mechanism, an operating knob and a rosette may be used which have a substantially smaller diameter.
According to the invention, this object is achieved when the arm of the sliding bolt is provided with the slidable guide member on the end facing the arresting pin, and a protruding carrier pin, as the control member, is moulded to fit on the arresting pin, which carrier pin engages directly in the slidable guide member of the sliding bolt and is displaceably guided therein.
h Because of the omission of the separate control member, the sliding bolt may be directly connected to the arresting pin internally of the housing. Only the arresting pin needs to extend through the lock cover plate, the diameter of which pin can be readily reduced to 10 mm. In consequence, the lock is also suitable for relatively small doors and is not so bulky any more.
According to one embodiment, the resilient resetting into the initial position after the required lifting-over process is achieved when the end of the arresting pin, which protrudes into the housing, is provided with a blind-end bore, into which a mandrel is insertable, which mandrel is moulded to fit on the base of the housing and has a compression spring slipped thereover, the compression spring being supported on the base of the housing and in the blind-end bore.
According to another embodiment, the connection between the operating knob and arresting pin is so achieved that the free end of the arresting pin is formed as a threaded portion, onto which an operating knob is screwed, which knob has an external diameter which is adapted to the external diameter of the arresting pin.
An improvement in the guidance of the arresting pin during the displacement movement is achieved when a guide block, provided with guide ribs, is moulded to fit on the end of the arresting pin facing the housing, and the guide ribs of the guide block are guided in guide grooves in housing walls so as to be displaceable parallel to the arresting pin.
According to a further embodiment, the tumbler is so constructed that the arresting pin is provided with the locking pin on the end remote from the sliding bolt, which locking pin is supported in the control slide of the tumbler, the tumbler is guided transversely relative to the direction of displacement of the sliding bolt so as to be displaceable in the housing and is supported on the housing, on the end remote from the sliding bolt, by means of support springs so as to be displaceable, to a limited extent, in the direction of displacement of the sliding bolt, and the control slide of the tumbler has a locking receiver for receiving the locking pin, which receiver securely retains the locking pin in a locked position when the arresting pin is in its operating position, the locking pin being adapted so that it can be brought into said locked position as a result of the operating knob being lifted thereover and so that it can be released from said locked position.
So that the small operating knob can also be actuated just as satisfactorily, more especially when the lift-over movement is effected, one embodiment provides that, in its lifted-over position, the operating knob terminates flush with a rosette or centre-piece, which is inserted into an opening in a door, and the operating knob protrudes beyond the rosette by an amount corresponding to the lift-over movement when the arresting pin is in its operating position.
The displacement force acts symmetrically upon the sliding bolt when the sliding bolt has two arms, which surround two oppositely situated ends of the arresting pin parallel to one another and are provided with slidable guide members of identical area on the internal surfaces facing one another, and the arresting pin is provided with carrier pins, which protrude diametrically relative to one another.
So that the locked position of the tumbler also provides a specific securement for the position of the sliding bolt, the slidable guide members have, in the arms of the sliding bolt, an inclined displaceable portion which passes into a lift-over portion situated vertically relative to the direction of displacement of the sliding bolt, and the carrier pins of the arresting pin are disposed in the upper end region of the lift-over portions of the slidable guide members in the operating position. The carrier pins of the arresting pin then securely retain the sliding bolt specifically in the bolted position.
The present invention will be further illustrated, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:- Fig. 1 is a cross-section through a lock, with the sliding bolt of the invention in its unbolted position, such cross-section extending parallel to the direction of displacement of the sliding bolt; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the lock of Fig. 1 viewed in a direction towards the lock cover plate; Fig. 3 is a cross-section through the lock of Fig. 1, such cross-section extending transversely relative to the direction of displacement of the sliding bolt; Fig. 4 is a cross-section, corresponding to Fig. 1, through the lock when the sliding bolt is in its bolted position; and Fig. 5 is a plan view of the lock of Fig. 4, viewed in a direction towards the lock cover plate.
Fig. 1 illustrates a lock according to the invention, which lock is installed in a bore 11 in a door or flap 10. A sliding bolt 21 is accommodated in a boxlike housing 19 and is inserted, in its unbolted position, in an opening 20 in a lateral wall of the housing 19 so as to be flush therewith. The sliding bolt 21 widens in the housing 19 and forms two plate-like arms 22 and 24, which are orientated in the direction of displacement of the sliding bolt 21 and extend vertically relative to the sliding bolt 21. Housing ribs or the like guide the sliding bolt 21, so that it can be displaced into the bolted position of Fig. 4 in the housing 19, the sliding bolt 21 in said position protruding beyond the lateral wall provided with the opening 20. The arms 22 and 24 of the sliding bolt 21 are provided, on the ends facing one another. with slidable guide members 23 and 25, which extend from the upper end of the arms 22 and 24 facing a lock cover plate 32 closing the housing 19 and form an inclined displaceable portion which descends towards the rear housing wall and the housing base and passes into a vertical lift- over portion. The lock cover plate 32 is locked in position in the housing 19 and protrudes with a collar into the opening 11 in the door or flap 10.
An arresting pin 13 is displaceable in the opening in the lock cover plate 32 and is provided, in the housing 19, with two diametrically orientated carrier pins 16. These carrier pins 16 are inserted in the slidable guide members 23 and 25 of the arms 22 and 24 of the sliding bolt 21, so that, when the arresting pin 13 is displaced in a direction towards the sliding bolt 21, the carrier pins 16 displace the sliding bolt 21 into the bolted position illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5 via the displaceable portions of the slidable guide members 23 and 25. During the displacement of the arresting pin 13, the non-rotatable guidance of the arresting pin 13 is improved by a guide block 28, which is moulded to fit on the arresting pin 13 and is guided by two guide ribs 29 in guide grooves 27 in housing walls 26. These housing walls 26 also abut partially against the circumference of the arresting pin 13, as is apparent in the plan view of Fig. 2.
The arresting pin 13 is guided externally of the lock cover plate 32 in a rosette 12 which is inserted in the opening 11 in the door or f lap 10. The free end of the arresting pin 13 is formed as a threaded portion 14, which has a reduced diameter and onto which an operating knob 15 is screwed. The operating knob 15 is adapted, in respect of its external diameter, to the external diameter of the arresting pin 13, so that it can be urged into the rosette 12. In such case, as is apparlent in Fig. 3, the compression spring 31 must be compressed, said spring being slipped over a mandrel 30 on the base of the housing 19. In such case, the mandrel 30 and the compression spring 31 are inserted in a blind-end bore in the arresting pin 13. The compression spring 31 is thereby supported in the blind-end bore in the arresting pin 13. The sliding bolt 21 is displaced until the carrier pins 16 of the arresting pin 13 pass into the vertical lift-over portions of the slidable guide members 23 and 25.
As is apparent in Fig. 5, the arms 22 and 24 of the sliding bolt 21 extend to the internal wall of the lateral wall, which is provided with the opening 20, and they define the captive bolted position of the sliding bolt 21.
Remote from the sliding bolt 21, a locking pin 17 is moulded to fit on the guide block 28 of the arresting pin 13 and is guided in a control slide of a tumbler 18, which is known per se. Such tumbler 18 is supported on the housing 19 by means of resilient lugs and is thereby displaceable in the direction of displacement of the sliding bolt 21 in a spring-mounted and limited manner. The control slide of the tumbler 18 is so adapted that, with a lift-over movement of the arresting pin 13, i.e. with the displacement of the carrier pins 16 in the vertical lift-over portions of the slidable guide members 23 and 25, the locking pin 17 is introduced into a locked position of the control slide of the tumbler 18. With this lift-over movement, the operating knob 15 terminates substantially flush with the rosette 12 and, in the locked z position which corresponds to the bolted position of the sliding bolt 21, the operating knob 15 protrudes somewhat beyond the rosette 12 by an amount corresponding to the lift-over movement. The carrier pins 16 are situated in the upper end regions of the lift-over portions of the slidable guide members 23 and 25 and thereby ensure the bolted position of the sliding bolt 21, as illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5.
The arms 22 and 24 of the sliding bolt 21 extend from the housing base to the internal surface of the lock cover plate 32 and, in consequence, are also guided in the housing 19 along these two surfaces.
Such an embodiment for the lock excludes the necessity for the lock to have its own particular control member, since the arresting pin 13 together with the sliding bolt 21 form the actuating mechanism. In such case, the arresting pin 13 with the operating knob 15 may be reduced to a total external diameter of the order of magnitude of 10 mm.
