Description

SPOT BOARD APPARATUS FOR PLASTERING This invention relates to spot board apparatus for plastering.
Persons doing plastering traditionally have their plaster on a spot board. When working at elevated positions, the spot board is traditionally difficult to mount at the elevated position. A wide variety of pieces of equipment are used to try and mount the spot board at an elevated position, for example buckets or milk crates mounted one on top of each other. The resulting structure is unstable and cannot easily be moved around a room or other place where the plastering is taking place.
It is an aim of the present invention to obviate or reduce the above mentioned problems.
Accordingly, in one non-limiting embodiment of the invention, there is provided spot board apparatus for plastering, which spot board apparatus comprises a base, an elongate support member which upstands from the base, and a plastering board which is for receiving plaster and which is provided on the end of the support member remote from the base, the base being such that it comprises foldable legs, which foldable legs are foldable in an upward direction to lie alongside the support member thereby to enable the spot board apparatus to be compact when not in use, and which foldable legs are permanently attached to the spot board apparatus thereby to ensure that the foldable legs do not get lost.
The spot board apparatus of the present invention is very convenient for enabling the plaster for plastering to be located at exactly the correct position and exactly the correct height. Because the legs of the spot board apparatus are foldable, the spot board apparatus can easily be moved from room to room, located in a car, lorry or van for transportation, or stored. Because the legs are permanently attached to the spot board apparatus, the legs cannot get lost and thus render the spot board apparatus unusable.
Preferably, there are four of the foldable legs. More or less foldable legs may be employed so that, for example, the spot board apparatus may have three of the foldable legs.
The foldable legs may each be pivotally attached to a bottom end part of the elongate support member.
The base may include stay members for rigidifying the foldable legs when the spot board apparatus is in use.
In one embodiment of the invention, the stay members are pivotable stay members which extend between the foldable legs and the support member. The stay members may be held in position on the support member by a wing nut or by any other suitable and appropriate securing means. In another embodiment of the invention, the foldable legs are maintained in their unfolded condition by pin members which pass up hollow portions of the foldable legs such that the pin members each have a first part which passes up one foldable leg and the second part which extends from the said one foldable leg and which rests on another foldable leg.
The foldable legs may each have roller means for facilitating movement of the spot board apparatus.
The roller means may be wheels or castors.
Advantageously, the roller means are each provided with a brake device for preventing unwanted movement of the roller means.
The plastering board may be a one-position plastering board. Alternatively, the plastering board may be an adjustable plastering board which is able to be tilted relative to the support member, for example for convenience during moving the spot board apparatus whilst working or whilst transporting or storing the spot board apparatus.
Irrespective of whether the plastering board is a one-position plastering board or an adjustable plastering board, the plastering board may be arranged to be completely removable from the support member if desired.
Preferably, the support member is a single elongate support member.
Usually, the support member will be adjustable in length. The support member is preferably adJustable by being a telescopic support member having a first part which slidable in a second part. Other adjustable arrangements for the support member may be employed.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a known spot board in use; Figure 2 shows first spot board apparatus of the present invention in use; Figure 3 shows the spot board apparatus of Figure 2 being carried away from a site after use; Figure 4 shows the spot board apparatus as shown in Figure 2 in more detail; Figures 5 and 6 show parts of the spot board apparatus in the folded condition as shown in Figure 3; Figure 7 shows a plastering board which forms a part of the spot board apparatus as shown in Figures 2 and 3; Figure 8 shows a plastering board which is an alternative to that shown in Figure 7; and Figures 9 and 10 show an alternative base to that shown in Figure 2.
Referring to Figure 1, there is shown a plasterer 2 working at an elevated position. For this purpose, the plaster 2 is standing on a platform 4 supported by a pair of legs 6. The plasterer 2 is using a plastering tool 8 and plaster 10. The plaster 10 is mounted on a spot board 12. In order to mount the spot board 12 at the required height, the spot board 12 is shown balanced on three buckets 14. The buckets 14 form an unstable arrangement for mounting the spot board 12.
In addition, the buckets 14 cannot easily be moved from place to place as the plasterer plasters around a room.
It can also be seen that the plasterer 2 cannot easily adjust the height of the buckets 14.
Referring to Figures 2 to 7, there is shown spot board apparatus 16 for plastering. The spot board apparatus 16 comprises a base 18, an elongate support member 20 which upstands from the base 18, and a plastering board 22 which is for receiving plaster 24. As shown, the plastering board 22 is provided on the end of the support member 20 remote from the base 18.
The base 18 is such that it comprises four foldable legs 26. The foldable legs 26 are foldable in an upward direction to lie alongside the support member 20. Thus, as shown in Figure 3, the spot board apparatus 16 is extremely compact when it is not required to be used and when it is to be taken from site to site.
As can be seen most clearly from Figure 4, the foldable legs 26 pivot about pivots 28 so that the foldable legs 26 are permanently attached to the spot board apparatus 16. This ensures that the foldable legs 26 do not get lost during use, transportation and storage of the spot board apparatus 16 as could easily happen on a building site. The pivots 28 are fixed to a bottom end portion 30 of the support member 20.
The base 18 is also provided with stay members 32 for rigidifying the foldable legs 26 when the spot board apparatus 16 is in use. The stay members 32 are pivotable stay members which pivot about pivots 34 provided on the foldable legs 26. The stay members 32 extend between the foldable legs 26 and the support member 20. More specifically, the bottom end portion 30 of the support member 20 is provided with a plurality of block members 36 against which the stay members 32 rest. The stay members 32 are then fixed in position by wing nuts 38.
As shown in Figure 5, the block members 36 include threaded bolts 40 which receive the wing nuts 38. The stay members 32 may be provided with notches 42 for fitting over the bolts 40.
The foldable legs 26 are each provided with roller means in the form of a wheel 44. Each wheel 44 is provided with a brake device (not shown) for preventing unwanted movement of the wheels 44.
The support member 20 is a telescopic support member which has a first part 46 and a second part 48 which telescopes inside the first part 46. The second part 48 can thus slide into or be pulled out of the first part 46 and the two parts 46, 48 can be held in a desired position by means of a locking pin 50 (see Figure 8) locating in registering apertures 52 in the first and second parts 46, 48 respectively.
The plastering board 22 has an H-frame 54 on its under surface 56 as shown in Figure 7. A tubular member 58 extends from the H-frame 54 and slides into the open upper end 60 of the second part 48 of the support member 20. Thus the plastering board 22 as shown in Figures 2 to 7 is a one-position plastering board 22.
An alternative plastering board 62 is shown in Figure 8. The plastering board 62 still has the H-frame 54. The H-frame 54 supports a connecting member 64 which has a bolt 68 such that the connecting member 64 can be fastened between the bifurcated end 70 of a tubular member 72 which fits in the second part 48 of the support member 20 in the same manner as described above for the tubular member 58 shown in Figure 7.
Referring now to Figures 9 and 10, there are shown alternative foldable legs 74 to the foldable legs 26 shown in Figures 2 to 7. In Figures 9 and 10, the foldable legs are maintained in their unfolded condition by pin members 76 which pass up hollow portions 78 of the foldable legs 74. Each pin member 76 has a first part 80 which passes up one of the foldable legs 74, and a second part 82 which extends from the foldable legs 74 and which terminates in a hook portion 84 as shown. The hook portion 84 hooks over an adjacent foldable leg 74 so that all of the foldable legs 74 are held together by the various pin members 76.
As can be seen from Figure 10, the pivot 28 is formed by a bolt 86 and a nut 88. Thus the bolts 86 and the nuts 88 permanently fasten the foldable legs 74 to the support member 20 and therefore to the spot board apparatus 16, whilst allowing the foldable legs 74 to fold upwardly by a pivoting action.
It is to be appreciated that the embodiments of the invention described above with reference to the accompanying drawings have been given by way of example only and that modifications may be effected. Thus, for example, the spot board apparatus may be made from various materials including steel and aluminium alloys.
