Abstract

A method for specifying colours comprises imprinting a series of equal sized bars of the colours black, cyan, yellow and magenta at colour loadings of from 5% to 100% in 5% steps onto respective sheets of transparent material, e.g. polyvinyl, polyester or polyacetate material, overlaying one or more sheets such that imprinted areas overlap to provide a specific colour moving one or more of said sheets relative to the other sheets until a desired colour is obtained and then specifying the colour by reference to the respective colour loadings of the imprints forming the said colour. <IMAGE>

Description

METHOD FOR SPECIFYING COLOURS FOR COLOUR PRINTING The present-invention relates to an improved and simplified method for specifying colours for colour printing.
Currently colours for colour printing are specified by reference to what are known as process colour charts.
These charts provide a very wide range of colours based on mixtures of two or more of the basic colours, i.e. black, cyan, magenta and yellow at specified loadings per unit of area of, for example, 5, 10, 20 up to 100% (solid colour) of a single colour. Thus a mixture of cyan and yellow for a range of backings of 5-100% will give a range of greens on one chart and this may be overlaid with a black also in the range of 5-100% on another chart. Charts are also provided for the basic colours themselves.
These colour charts are expensive and have a limited application; they cannot, for example, show the direct effect of changing one colour in a multi-colour print, for example by showing the effect of changing a yellow colour to green without re-printing at different colour loadings.
We have now found an improved method for colour specification in which method each of the four basic colours, black, cyan, yellow and magenta are imprinted onto separate sheets of clear transparent material, for example polyvinyl, polyacetate or polyester sheets, in discreet equal sized areas on each sheet at a series of specified colour loadings per unit of surface area for example per square milimetre, overlaying one sheet on at least one other sheet such that the colour areas overlap and moving one sheet relative to the other until the colour mix provides the colour required, and then defining the colour by the relevant loadings noted on the sheets.
Each sheet of clear transparent material may be rectangular in shape and the basic colours imprinted in the form of a strip of eqispaced bars, say 14 x 40mm, 3mm apart at loadings of 100% down to 5X in 5 steps.
An illustration of a sheet used in the present invention is shown in the accompanying drawing In the drawing a sheet of clear transparent polyacetate is shown imprinted with 11 bars of black pigment a the colour loadings indicated beneath each bar. The sheet is imprinted by the standard method used in the preparation of colour charts. Sheets for cyan, yellow and magenta are prepared in a similar manner.
One particular advantage of this method of specifying a colour for printing is that the sheets may be overlaid on any white areas of a colour print to assess the impact of a different colour on the print and to determine the colour loading required for a colour change in that area.

Claims (4)

1. A method for colour specification wherein four basic colours1 black, cyan, yellow and magenta are each imprinted as a series of discrete areas on individual sheets of transparent material, each imprinted area defining a specific colour loading per unit of surface area, whereby at least one sheet may be overlaid on at least one other sheet such that imprinted areas overlap, the overlaid sheets moved in relation to each other until the confirmation of overlapping imprinted areas provides the desired colour, and defining the said colour by reference to the respective colour loadings of the overlapping imprinted areas forming the said colour.
2. ' A method according to claim 1 wherein the transparent sheets are polyvinyl, polyacetate or polyester material.
3. A method according to claim 1 or 2 wherein the imprinted areas are rectangular bars and the colour loadings range from 5% to 100% in 5% steps.
4. A method for colour specification substantially as herein described with reference to the drawing.
