Description

2) 2 1).3 5 _) 7 8mm VIDEO APPARATUS
DESCRIPTION
The present invention relates to 8mm video apparatus.
As used herein 118mmI, means a recording protocol of the type used in the 8mm Video Cassette Recorder standard and need not be restrictive of the width of the tape.
The conventional 12.7 mm (h inch) VCR standard.
which is most commonly used in home videoequipment, includes a separate audio track. This makes audio editing practicable.
However, in the case of 8mm VCR, no separate audio track is provided. Instead, the audio signals are recorded as frequency modulated signals in a in recording domain together with the video and tracking pilot signals. The standard does allow for PCM data to - 2 be recorded in an auxilliary recording domain and audio editing has been performed using PCM audio data.
However. as the additional installation of PCX, functions increases the cost of 8m VCR equipment, they are consequently only available on expensive models.
It is an aim of the present invention to enable audio t editing functions to be available in.8mm video apparatus of modest cost. The term 11 8M video apparatuse, includes camcorders, video cassette recorders. editing consoles and the like.
According to the present invention, there is provided an 8 mm video tape apparatus, comprising fixedhead means for recording or reproducing signals in an auxiliary recording region of an 8 mm video tape.
Preferably, the fixed head means includes two fixed heads.
is Preferably, the apparatus includes caption data processing means arranged to receive caption data from the fixed head means. The processed caption data can then be supplied to an on-screen display circuit to display a caption on a television screen.
Preferably, the apparatus includes a rotary head and audio processing means arranged for selectively processing audio signals from the fixed head means and the rotary head.
Preferably,, the apparatus includes switching means for selectively connecting the fixed head means and the rotary head means to the audio processing means, and control means responsive to a control signal reproduced by a fixed head to operate the switching means. The control signal may be reproduced by one of the fixed heads comprising the fixed head means. However, there is preferably a further fixed head arranged for reproducing the signals recorded in a marginal track of an 8 mm video tape.
- 4 An embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:.
Figure 1 is a schematic diagram of the arrangement of tracks in the conventional 8 mm video standard; Figure 2 is a block diagram of an audio editing apparatus for 8 mm video tape in accordance with the present invention; Figure 3 is a schematic diagram of the heads of the audio editing apparatus shown in Figure 2; Figure 4 is a timing diagram for various signals of the apparatus shown in Figure 2; and Figure 5 is a waveform diagram showing a format suitable for recording caption data.
Referring to Figure 1, a 0.6 mm wide track 101a, 101b runs along both margins of the front surface of an 8 mm. video tape 100. 0.1 mm wide guard bands 102a, 102b are formed on the inside of said tracks for fixed heads 101a, 101b. A recording domain 103, comprising main recording domain and auxiliary recording domain, is formed on the inside of said guard bands 102a. 102b.
A video signal, a FM audio signal and a tracking pilot signal are recorded in the main recording domain of said recording domain 103 and a PCX signal and a tracking pilot signal are recorded in the auxiliary recording domain.
The main and auxiliary recording domains of said recording domain 103 are formed when the tape 100 moves along the direction whilst respective rotary heads (not shown) rotate by 180 and 360 degrees respectively.
Audio editing can be performed using 8 mm VCR equipped with a PCM function by recording PCM audio signals in the auxiliary recording domain.
However,, most of the 8 mm video apparatus available on the market is not equipped with a PCM function.
8mm video apparatusnot equipped with a PCX function cannot be used for audio editing because the auxiliary recording domain cannot be used.
Referring to Figure 2, fixed head means 200 comprises first and second heads 201, 202, for recording and reproducing longitudinal tracks in the auxiliary recording domain containing linear audio signals or caption data signals, and a control head 203 for recording or reproducing a control signals in the track 101b.
The first head 201 is a dual-purpose audio/caption head which can record and reproduce caption and audio signals.
A caption data processing means 210 processes the caption data reproduced by the first head 201.
An audio signal processing means 220 processes the audio signals outputted from said fixed heads 200 and the existing FM audio amplifier 241.
The FM audio amplifier 241 is an amplifier which processes FM audio signals reproduced frommain recording domain.
A switch means 230 selects the caption data processing means 210 or the audio signal processing means 220 and then connects it to the first head 201 of said fixed heads 200.
By the selection of said switch means 230, the first head 201 records or reproduces caption data, or records or reproduces audio signals.
Switching means 240 controls theconnection status between the FM audio aniplifer 241 and the audio signal processing means 220.
-,8 - The audio signal processing means 220,, by the switching of the switching means 240, processes either FM audio signals output from the audio amplifier 241 or the audio signals recorded or reproduced by said fixed heads 200.
A microprocessor 250 controls switch means 230 and switching means 240 to output to OSD means the character signals produced by the caption data processed by the caption data processing means 210, and processes the control signals recorded or reproduced by the control head 203.
Accordingly, when FM audio signals are reproduced, which is a basic function of an 8 mm VCR, the microprocessor 250 outputs control signal S2 and closes switching means 240. In this condition, the FM audio amplifer 241 outputs FM audio signals reproduced from main recording domain of the 8 mm tape 100.
FM audio signals output from the FM audio amplifier 241 are input into the audio signal processing means 220 through the switching means 240.
- 9 The audio signal processing means 220 processes input FM audio signals and outputs, through output means such as a speaker. Thus, the user can view video and can listen to FM audio.
When the auxiliary recording domain of the recording domain 103 in Figure 1 is used for 2 audio signal channels, the microprocessor 250, outputs the control signals S1, S2 to cause the rotor termination C and the selective terminal NC to be connected and causes the switching means 240 to be open.. and thereafter causes the connection of the audio signal processing means 220 and the FM audio amplifer 241 to be cut off.
When the rotor termination C and selective terminal NC of the switch means 230 are connected, and when the switching means 240 is open, the linear audio signals recorded on two tracks in the auxiliary recording domain are reproduced by the first and second heads 2011 202 and then input into the audio signal processing means 220.
- 10 The audio signal processing means 220 treats the audio signals reproduced by the first and second heads 2011202 and then outputs the resultant processed signals.
As described in the foregoing, if two heads 210, 202 are used, stereo is possible, and one of the two tracks located in the auxiliary recording domain can be recorded with English and the other track can be recorded with Japanese, so that the viewer can selectively listen to the language of his choice.
Furthermore, when one track of the auxiliary recording domain in Figure 1 is used for captioning and other other channel is used for audio signals, the microprocessor 250 outputs control signal S1 and connects the rotor termination C and selective terminal NO of the selective means 230.
When the rotor termination C and selective terminal NO of the switch means 230 are connected, the caption data recorded in one track in the auxiliary recorded domain is reproduced by the first head 201 of the fixed heads for input into the caption data processing means 210.
The caption data processing means 210 processes the reproduced signal and inputs the caption data into the microprocessor 250.
The microprocessor 250 inputs to the OSD means 251 the character signal produced by the caption data processing means 210 in accordance with the caption data and generates the captions.
When said switching means 240 is closed by the control signal S2, the linear audio signal reproduced by the output of FM audio amplifier 241 and the second head 202 of the fixed heads 200 are input into the audio signal processing means 220.
Accordingly, the audio signal processing means 220 processes for output the FM audio signals recorded in the main recording domain and the linear audio signals recorded in the auxiliary recording domain.
- 12 The control signals S1, S2 may be output by the microprocessor 250 according to the control signal S3 read by control head 203.
is In other words, when video signals and audio signals are recorded on the tape, and if the user records the control signal S3 on the tape according to his discretion, the control signal S3 is read by control head 203 during reproduction, and the control signal S3 being read is input into the microprocessor 250.
When the control signal is input into the microprocessor 250, the microprocessor 250 outputs control signals S1, S2, in accordance with control signal S3, to the switch means 230 and switching means 240.
A control signal, S3, already recorded, can be switched on or off according to the user's order for editing or according to the portion the user wants, and can be recorded according to the instructions.
A linear signal is recorded at a much lower frequency than a PCM signal. and as the recording angle is different, even though the linear audio signal is recorded in the auxiliary recording domain of an Smm tape,, recorded with a PCM signal, cross-talk does not occur between the PCM signal and the linear audio signal.
Referring to Figure 3, on either side of a rotating head drum 300 there are provided guide posts 301a, 301b for applying the tape 100 to the rotating head drum 300.
The fixed head 200 is installed to the right (in the drawing) of the guide post 301b, perpendicular tothe tape.
The first and second heads 201, 202 of fixed heads 200 are installed parallel to the longitudinal direction of the auxiliary recording domain of the tape 100, and control head 203 is installed parallel to the fixed head track 101b.
.I - 14 Referring to Figures 4A to 4D, the control signal S3 recorded on the tapes is read by control head 203 and the control signal S3 is applied to the microprocessor 250.
When the control signal S3, applied tothe microprocessor 250, is of low level. the microprocessor 250 outputs control signal S2, causing switching means 240 to be closed. When the control signal S3, applied to the microprocessor 250, is of high level, the microprocessor 250 outputs control signal S2, causing switching means 240 to be open.
When the switching means is turned off, the linear audio signals being edited and recorded in the auxiliary recording domain are applied to audio signal processing means 220, through the switch means 230, and processed thereby.
Figure 4D is a diagram of the audio signal processed and finally outputted from audio signal treatment means 220. In the finally-output audio signal, when control signal S3 is of low level, switching means 240 is - is closed. causing FM audio signals recorded in main recording domain to be applied to audio signal processing means 220, and when control signal S3 is of high level, switching means 240 is opened, causing the output of FM audio signals to cease.
Accordingly, when control signal S3 is of low level, as shown in Figure 4C, and because linear audio signal is not recorded, FM audio signals are processed and output by the audio signal processing means 220.
When the control signal S3 is of high level, as shown in Figure4C,, edited linear audio signal is processed and output.
is Referring to Figure 5, the caption data is recorded between start data showing the start point and end data showing the end point using 5 bits and can indicate any one of 32 characters (special characters included) by the data 00000-11111.
In other words, characters such as the alphabet of A Z, 99 elf ?1 1. space and the like are displayed.
These caption data are recorded on one track of the auxiliary recording domain and linear audio signals are recorded on the other track.
As described in the foregoing, the present invention can perform audio editing function just by installing the simple hardware of fixed heads into Smm video apparatus.
The present invention further enables to hook up a captioning function, a multivoice system and a hi-fi stereo system, and because the tape being used is 8mm metal tape, high fidelity of tone quality in the high frequency band can be obtained.
