Abstract

A mattress has a mattress inner and a cover formed of a preferably two-way stretch knitted or woven nylon fabric which is coated with a waterproof polymer. The polymer has a high carbon content which renders the coating electrically conductive to prevent a build up of static electricity on the cover. In addition, the cover is sealed around the inner mattress by welding techniques such as heat welding or high frequency welding which are used for welding plastics material to provide a cover which is as strong along the welded seams as in the body of the material.

Description

Title: Mattress The present invention relates to mattresses.
Mattresses which are used in hospitals, for example on hospital trollies or operating tables, traditionally have a covering of conductive black neoprene rubber sheeting. The sheeting is secured around the mattress inner using adhesives.
Unfortunately, despite the use of modern adhesives the sheeting has a tendency to peel open along the seams. In addition, the rubber sheeting itself has a tendency to split. This is unacceptable in hospitals where the specification for mattresses of this type requires them to be sealed against the ingress of fluids (typically blood).
The present invention seeks to provide an improved mattress.
Accordingly, the present invention provides a mattress comprising a mattress inner and a cover sealingly enclosing said mattress inner, and wherein said cover comprises a laminate of a knitted or woven fabric and an electrically conductive waterproof plastics material layer.
In a preferred form of the invention the cover is of a material enabling welding of said material sealingly to enclose said mattress inner.
Advantageously, the cover has a high carbon content which renders the cover material electrically conductive.
Advantageously said fabric is a stretch knitted or woven nylon fabric and preferably the plastics material layer is a conductive waterproof polymer coating on the nylon fabric. The stretch knitted or woven fabric is preferably two-way stretch to enable the surface to conform very closely to a patient's body in use.
Advantageously, the polymer is polyurethane.
In one example of the invention the cover is formed by a two-way stretch knitted or woven nylon fabric which is coated with a waterproof polymer, typically polyurethane film. This enables the cover to be closed by welding techniques such as heat welding or high frequency welding which are used for welding plastics material. This results in a mattress having a cover which is as strong along the welding seams as in the body of the cover material and in which the cover material itself is highly resistant to splitting. The polyurethane coating has a high carbon content which renders the cover electrically conductive and therefore anti-static. There is, therefore, no build up of electrostatic charge on a mattress using such a cover which, when such mattresses are used in operating theatres, avoids the problems which normally ensue with known mattresses.
To reduce the tendency for pressure-sores to form during lengthy surgery, a two-way stretch knitted or woven fabric which can conform closely to a patient's body is used. This enables the maximum area of contact to be achieved with the supporting mattress surface.
