Abstract
A stand for a musical instrument, such as a guitar, has a pair of legs 1, 2 connected to supporting feet 3, 4. A support 7, 8 extends towards the bottom of the stand and in use receives and supports the lower end of the instrument. A neck portion 9 extends upwardly from the legs and includes at its upper end a neck support which holds the neck of the musical instrument. The neck portion of the stand is formed from a pair of elongate members 10, 11 each of which is pivotally mounted at its lower end to a respective leg. A securing member 12 extends between the elongate members at their upper ends and can be released to allow the elongate members to be moved apart and folded downwards to lie alongside their respective legs when the stand is not in use. <IMAGE>
Description
MUSICAL INSTRUMENT STAND
According to the present invention, in a stand for a musical instrument such as a guitar, the stand comprising a pair of legs and feet extending from the lower ends of the legs to provide a stable base for the stand, a support extending from the stand in the region of its lower end and arranged to receive and support the lower end of the instrument, and a neck portion extending upwardly from the legs and including at its upper end a neck support arranged to hold the neck of the musical instrument, the neck portion comprises a pair of elongate members each pivotally mounted at the lower end thereof to a respective leg, and a securing member extending between the elongate members at their upper ends, the securing member being releasable to allow the elongate members to be moved apart and folded downwards to lie alongside their respective legs when the stand is not in use.
Hitherto, in order to provide the required mechanical strength guitar stands have been solid in construction.
The present inventors have found however that by forming the neck portion from a pair of pivotally mounted members as described above, it is possible to provide the required strength whilst enabling the stand to be folded down when not in use, thereby greatly reducing the space required for storage.
Preferably the legs are hinged together at their upper ends and are arranged to fold inwards for storage.
Preferably the elongate members are tubular in constructions and the legs are hollow in construction, the lower ends of the elongate members extending through the width of the respective leg to provide the required pivotal mounting.
Preferably the neck support comprises a pair of arms, one arm being formed on the end of each of the elongate members and the inner ends of the arms abutting when the elongate members are secured together.
Preferably the securing member is a metal clip secured to one of the elongate members and including a resilient arm which in use clips round the other of the elongate members.
One example of a stand in accordance with this invention will now be described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the stand in use; and
Figure 2 is a side view of the stand configured for storage.
A guitar stand comprises a pair of legs 1, 2 and rests on feet 3, 4 which extend from the ends of the legs. The legs 1, 2 are joined at their upper end by a hinge 5. A bracing member 6 extends between the legs towards their mid-points. Supports 7, 8 for the bottom of the guitar extend forwards from the legs 1, 2. Each support comprises a cylindrical metallic core 7 and a foam plastics body 8 fitted over the core 7.
A neck portion 9 of the stand is formed by two elongate tubular members 10, 11 which extend upwardly from the legs 1, 2. The bottom of each the tubular members 10, 11 passes through the respective leg 1, 2 from front to back, providing a pivotal mounting at the leg. The tubular members 10, 11 are joined together at their upper ends by a metal clip 12. The upper ends of the tubular members 10, 11 are shaped to provide respective arms of a substantially
U-shaped support 12 which in use holds the neck of the guitar. The tubular members in the region of the support for the neck are covered by a foam plastics material of the same type as used for the supports for the base of the guitar. The respective halves of the support in use abut at their inner ends.
When the stand is not in use the clip joining the upper ends of the tubular members is released and the members folded down along their respective legs 1, 2. The bracing member 6 which is hinged at its centre and at its ends is collapsed and the respective legs folded inwards towards each other.
Claims (6)
1. A stand for a musical instrument such as a guitar, the stand comprising a pair of legs and feet extending from the lower ends of the legs to provide a stable base for the stand, a support extending from the stand in the region of its lower end and arranged to receive and support the lower end of the instrument, and a neck portion extending upwardly from the legs and including at its upper end a neck support arranged to hold the neck of the musical instrument, in which the neck portion comprises a pair of elongate members each pivotally mounted at the lower end thereof to a respective leg, and a securing member extending between the elongate members at their upper ends, the securing member being releasable to allow the elongate members to be moved apart and folded downwards to lie alongside their respective legs when the stand is not in use.
2. A stand according to claim 1, in which the legs are hinged together at their upper ends and are arranged to fold inwards for storage.
3. A stand according to claim 1 or 2, in which the elongate members are tubular in constructions and the legs are hollow in construction, the lower ends of the elongate members extending through the width of the respective leg to provide the required pivotal mounting.
4. A stand according to any one of the preceding claims, in which the neck support comprises a pair of arms, one arm being formed on the end of each of the elongate members and the inner ends of the arms abutting when the elongate members are secured together.
