Abstract

A bendable tab 14 for fixing a backing 13 in a picture frame 16 comprises a soft metal tab having a point 15 subtending an angle of about 70 DEG . One pair or plurality of pairs of barbs are provided behind the point 15, each barb 18 comprising a corner 19 and a substantially right-angled undercut. An outward taper behind the barb leads to the full width of the metal tab 14. The tab 14 can be fired using a fixing gun or applied manually and the barb formations cause the point to embed firmly in the wood or plastics material of the frame 16. <IMAGE>

Description

FIXING FRAME BACKING This invention relates to the fixing of frame backings in the framing of pictures, mirrors and photographs for example.
The invention may find particular use for non-permanent framing of articles such as photographs. Permanently framed pictures are often sealed into their frames by means of tape.
However, commercially sold photographic frames have backings non-permanently secured so that a purchaser can remove any display picture within the frame and mount a chosen substitute.
However, commercially pre-framed pictures, mirrors and the like may be framed using the same method.
It is conventional practice to take the basic frame and insert the glass, a picture, and then a backing sheet of card or board which is held in place by bendable tabs applied by a manual tool or fired into the frame by means of a pneumatic power tool. These bendable tabs are made of thin and relatively soft metal and initially bend forward against the backing sheet. In order to remove the picture from the frame, the tabs are prised back so that the backing sheet and picture can be removed and replaced.
However, conventional tabs merely have a shallow pointed end which is fired into the material of the frame. On bending the tabs to remove the backing sheet at a later time, it is very easy to dislodge them. This is particularly the case if the tabs have not been inserted exactly at right angles to the frame edge. Bending the tab rearwardly then tends to lever the point out of the frame material, leaving the picture and backing unsupported at that point.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a more secure bendable tab.
According to the invention there is provided a bendable tab for fixing a frame backing, the tab comprising an elongate soft metal strip having a point at its forward end and a pair of barbs formed in its side edges adjacent the point. More than one pair of barbs may be provided.
Each barb may comprise a corner and a substantially rightangled undercut.
The point may subtend an angle of about 700.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described in more detail by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawing, which is a scrap perspective view of a portion of a picture frame, partly broken away.
The drawing shows a portion of a picture frame in use. The frame is formed of lengths of framing material 10 secured together at the corners in generally known manner. A sheet of glass or other transparent material 11 is inserted, followed by a picture 12 to be framed and a backing sheet 13 of card or board. The assembly is then secured into the frame 10 by means of a plurality of flexible tabs according to the invention as shown at 14. These tabs are fired into the material of the frame 10 so as to overlie the backing 13 when bent forwardly against the backing. In order to remove the picture 12 to be changed, the visible portion of the bendable tab 14 is bent rearwardly and the backing and picture can then be removed.
The tab itself has a pointed end 15 subtending an angle of about 700, which enables it to be driven readily into the material, typically wood or plastics, of the frame 10 at the junction between the main rear surface 16 of the frame and a step 17 which lies approximately flush with the backing sheet 13.
Behind the point 15 a pair of barbed formations 18 are provided in the opposite side edges of the tab, which is of relatively soft metal capable of being bent by manual pressure.
Each barb 18 comprises a corner 19 and a substantially rightangled undercut. An outward taper behind the barb leads to the full width of the metal tab.
The barbs 18 cause the point to embed firmly in the material of the frame 10 so that the wood fibres or cellular plastics of the frame close around the barb, after the fashion of an arrow head. Additionally, in driving the tab into the material of the frame, the corners 19 immediately in front of the right-angled undercut barbs tend to flex slightly inwardly, giving a very firm fixing as they return to their normal position.
It has been found that the use of a barbed point such as that illustrated ensures that the tab is very securely fixed, even where it is inserted at a slight angle to the junction 20 between the main surface 16 of the back of the frame 10 and the step 17.
Although only one pair of barbed formations is shown in the illustrated embodiment, it should be appreciated that two or more pairs could be provided and that the proportions of length to width of the tab might be varied to suit particular circumstances.
