Abstract

A locking system for bicycles consists of a chain or cable made of a suitable hardened material which may be retracted into a hardened metal tube when not in use. When in its locking mode the cable or chain is extended from the tube against a spring within the tube and looped around a permanent object with the padlock completing the locking procedure. The tube and cable or chain can swivel from the frame of the bicycle to achieve the most convenient angle for attachment to the permanent object. <IMAGE>

Description

A SWIVEL AND RETRACTABLE LOCKING APPARATUS FOR BICYCLES This is an apparatus expecially designed for the quickest and simplest method for securing your bicycle to its own wheel or to any fixed, solid object. For example: lamp-post, fencing, tree, etc. This device will deter any would-be thief.
The basic size of the retractable tube is the same size as a standard bicycle pump. The whole apparatus can be fixed to any main beam or cross member on the bicycle.
When not in use the device is stored neatly in a parallel position beside, either the main beam or a cross member. This is achieved with the help of the ball joint system and a plastic clip which is situated further up the cross member or main beam.
The device is locked onto the bicycle using a flat head bolt and a lock nut system. This method will prevent the ball joint clamp and the fixed retractable tube from any unwanted disconnection.
The ball joint is to enable the user to direct the retractable tube to its future, fixed destination.
CONSTRUCTION The retractor is a simple, hollow hardened steel tube with a fixed tension spring located inside the bottom of the steel tube.
The top end of the tension spring is secured to a length of steel cable or preferably a motor-bike chain. This chain would prevent any cable-cutting, thus making the system more secure. The chain could even be doubled up to make it unbreakable.
Located on the end of the cable or chain there can be a fixed standard snap-shut key lock or maybe a combination lock, if not a loop is fixed on the end of the cable or chain, this will enable the user to use any kind of lock he or she chooses.
Situated at the bottom of the tube is a ball joint in which the ball clamp unit is securely fixed inside, thus bonding the retractor tube and the locking clamp together.
A flat head bolt and a locking nut are used to shut the ball joint unit securely, thus making the retractable, swivelling, locking device part of the bicycle.

Claims (10)

CIaLLS
1. A locking system, primarily for use on bicycles, comprising a metal tube which contains the tension spring and cable or chain (diagram 2 and 3).
when in the retracted position.
2. The tube is attached to the bicycle frame with the aid of a universal ball joint and hardened metal clamp (diag. 4).
3. The ball joint system is incorporated into the metal clamp (diag. 4).
4. The containing tube is slotted in such a manner as to increase the degree of movement of the locking system (diag. 4).
5. The metal clamp (diag. 4) is secured to the bicycle frame by a suitable means for example a lockable flat headed bolt (daig. 4).
6. The cable or chain is fixed at its base inside the tube to a tension spring (diag. 5).
7. The base of the tension spring is attached to the bottom of the tube in a suitable manner and holds the cable and locking device as a unit.
8. The top of the cable or chain is formed in a suitable manner to accomodate a locking device (diag. 5).
9. When in use as a locking system the cable or chain is looped and locked around a permanent object (diag. 2).
10. When not in use the cable or chain retracts inside the tube with the aid of the tension spring and the whole system is stored neatly in a parallel position with the frame.
