Abstract

For the storage, paying out and winding in of flexible items such as hoses, conduits and cables a reel is manufactured in substantially one piece from a plastics material by rotational moulding. A metal axle or shaft 18 is integrally moulded into the reel. The axle or shaft may include at least one transverse projection which is also moulded into the reel. The axle or shaft can be hollow and the transverse projection is also hollow so as to be in communication with the hollow interior of the axle or shaft to form a passageway for liquid or a hose, cable or conduit. The axle or shaft may be supported at either end (Fig. 2). Handle 14 may fold into a recess, or be provided on a crank on the shaft. The reel may be filled with foamed plastics. <IMAGE>

Description

This invention relates to a reel.
Reels are used for the storage, paying out and winding in of a wide variety of flexible items including hoses, electrical cables, electric fence wires, power flexes, ropes and the like. Generally the reel is mounted for rotation on an axle or shaft which in turn is mounted by a support frame or is adapted to be mountable with an appropriate support fixture.
The reel will typically be manufactured in component form from a suitable metal and/or plastics material and the components then assembled. The completed reel is then located on a separate axle/shaft. Examples of such constructions can be found in U.S. Patent Specifications 3837448, 4506689, 4512361, 4586676 and 5007598.
The present invention proposes that the reel is manufactured in moulded form from a plastics material and substantially in one piece. In the preferred form the mounting axle/shaft is integrally moulded into the reel.
To this end the present invention broadly provides in one aspect a reel manufactured in substantially one piece from a plastics material by rotational moulding with an axle or shaft integrally moulded into the reel.
The reel preferably includes a drum portion with a pair of flanges which are spaced apart and project radially from the drum portion.
In the preferred form of the invention the drum portion and radially projecting flanges are all integrally formed by the rotational moulding process.
Also in a preferred form of the invention the axle or shaft which is integrally moulded into the reel includes at least one transversely projecting portion which becomes moulded into the reel.
Preferably the axle or shaft is hollow and in one form of the invention the or one of the transversely projecting portions is also hollow and is in communication with the hollow interior of the axle or shaft. The projecting portion is so disposed that it opens to the exterior of the reel. Thus the hollow axle/shaft and transversely disposed projecting portion can form a continuous passageway for a conduit or a flow passage for liquids.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein: Figure 1 is a perspective party cut away view from one end of a reel made in accordance with the present invention, Figure 2 is a perspective party cut away view of another embodiment of a reel incorporating the invention and Figure 3 is a cross-section view of the reel.
The reel 10 in its preferred form comprises a drum or body portion 11 with radially projecting flanges 12 and 13 at each end thereof. The body portion 11 and flanges 12 and 13 will be so dimensioned and proportioned to suit the end purpose. Thus a reel intended to be used with say a water hose will have greater dimensions than that designed for say the storage, paying out and winding in of an electric fence wire or tape.
Generally reel 10 will be provided with a handle 14 whereby the reel can be rotated. As an example Figure 1 illustrates handle 14 as being located near the periphery of flange 13. Handle 14 can be of a fold down construction. Thus a a recess can be provided so that the handle 14, when stored, is flush with the outwardly facing surface of flange 13. To this end an area of increased thickness of plastics material can project out from the outer surface of flange 13 to accommodate the recess.
Other forms of handles can be used and a more simpler arrangement is handle 14 being merely bolted through an opening provided adjacent the peripheral edge of flange 13 as shown in Figure 1. In yet a further arrangement a crank 15 can be attached to a projecting portion 16 of the axle/shaft on which the reel is mounted this axle/shaft being itself mounted for rotation in suitable bearings (see Figure 2).
Such arrangements of handles are in accordance with normal constructions typically found with reels of the type to which the present invention relates.
In the form illustrated in Figure 1 reel 10 is mounted in a cantilever fashion with the axle or shaft 18 extending through a suitable bearing 19 fixedly attached to an arm 20 extending from a base 21. In the arrangement illustrated in Figure 1 the base can be manufactured from a plastics material though naturally the base and arm can equally be manufactured from a suitable metal.
Reel 10 is manufactured in one piece in a plastics material by using the known rotational moulding technique. That is the drum or body portion 11 and flanges 12 and 13 are all moulded simultaneously in one piece. If further strengthening is required the interior of the reel can be filled by injecting or otherwise placing a foamed plastics material in the reel after the reel has been formed.
Axle 18, which will generally be of metal construction, is integrally moulded into the reel 10 by being positioned in the mould prior to the rotational moulding operation taking place. Thus plastics material (indicated at 17) will encase the axle. To obtain a bond between the axle 18 and encasing plastic 17 the axle is preferably heated prior to being placed in the mould or the moulding operation being commenced. As illustrated axle 18 terminates adjacent the plastics material forming the outer wall surface of the flange 12 in the vicinity of area 16. When the reel is destined to carry higher loadings it would generally be the case that axle 18 would extend through flange 13 to be mounted in a bearing carried by an arm or other support (see Figure 2). This further arm or support can extend from base 21 or, as shown in Figure 2, be separate thereto.
Axle 18 is provided with at least one transversely projecting portion 22. This portion 22 becomes integrally moulded within body portion 11 of the reel as illustrated and serves to "key" the reel onto axle/shaft 18 (see Figure 3).
A reel in accordance with the present invention is particularly suited for storing, paying out and winding in hoses to which a fluid supply can be coupled.
Accordingly the projecting portion 23 of axle 18 is screw threaded and to this can be attached a suitable rotatable coupling (see Figures 1 and 2) with nipple/connector 25 to which a hose from a supply (not shown) is attachable.
Axle 18 is hollow as is the or one of the transversely projecting portions 22 so that a flow passage for liquid is provided. Projecting portion 22 opens to the exterior of the body portion 11 and is provided with an internal screw thread into which a suitable nipple 24, or like coupling can be inserted. One end of the hose to be mounted on the reel is attached to the nipple/coupling 24. Thus the liquid supply can be coupled to the hose on the reel and remain coupled as the reel is rotated to pay out or wind in the hose stored on the reel.
In an alternative arrangement (not illustrated) an electrical conduit can pass through the hollow of the axle 18 and projecting portion 22. This conduit can either be coupled to an electrical cable, wire or the like wound on the reel or can be formed by one end of the cable, wire or the like. A suitable rotary connector is then provided on end 23 (see Figure 3) of axle 18 whereby connection to a power source can be effected. As a result power can be suppled to the cable, wire etc on the reel even when the reel is being rotated to pay out or wind in the cable, wire or the like. In such an arrangement the reel is particularly suited for use as part of temporary electric fencing equipment.
It is believed that by rotational moulding of the reel an effective yet economic means of forming a robust and versatile reel is achieved. By suitably controlling the flow of plastics during moulding in accordance with rotational moulding techniques the build up (i.e.
thickness) of plastic within certain areas of the reel, such as at the periphery of the flanges and in the area about portion 22, can be regulated to strengthen the reel in those areas requiring rigidity or strength characteristics. Also strengthening ribs (such as ribs 27 in recess 28 of flange 12) can be integrally moulded into flanges 12 and/or 13 of the reel as may be required.
In a further embodiment a pivoted lever (not shown) can be mounted by arm 20. This lever can be moved to a position whereby it engages with a rib 27 to lock the reel against rotation.
Additionally by being able to integrally mould the axle it is believed that further economics of manufacture are achievable as the completed reel needs to then only be coupled to the support or mounting arrangement.
When the reel is used for storage of a hose it is believed that by using a good quality leak proof rotary coupling leakage problems previously associated with reels of this type will be overcome.
