Abstract
225,617. Bloxam, A. G., (Barnickel & Co., W. S.). Sept. 4. 1923. Mineral oils, purifying.-Emulsions of petroleum with water or brine, such as are provided in oil fields, storage tanks, and oil refineries, are broken by treatment with a modified fatty acid, so that on standing the oil separates as an upper layer. Specified agents are :-the esters and sulphonates of fatty acids, sulpho-fatty acids e.g. sulpho-oleic acid. the esters and aromatic compounds of sulpho-fatty acids e.g. the phenol ester of sulpho-oleic acid, and all fatty acids modified by addition or substitution in the hydrocarbon radical, e.g. the hydroxy, halogen, sulphurized, nitro-, and amino-derivatives, and the esters or salts of such acids. In an example a petroleum emulsion in a tank A is heated to 100-150‹ F. by a steam coil, B, and agitated by air or other gas from a pip& C for 10-30 minutes after 0.01- 1.0 per cent of the modified fatty acid has been run in from a vessel D. The Specification also refers to the use of sulphonic acids for preventing the formation of water-in-oil emulsions, e.g. in storage tanks, and the breaking of crude oil emulsions by the admixture therewith of a soluble metallic sulphate or of a water softening agent.
