Abstract

A transaction processing system (for processing transactions involving several linked processors) has a master transaction manager (TM) controlling a number of resource managers (RMs) and associated resources, possibly through subordinate TMs. To ensure that consistency is maintained throughout the system, a 2-phase protocol is used, with Prepare and Commit states, so that all resources are updated to reflect the transaction (or the system reverts to its original state). This involves keeping log records at various processors. On a failure such as a processor crash, the failed processor recovers using records obtained from other processors. A TM 13 stores log records received from various subordinate RPs each record including a recovery field REG containing information about the RP organization. For recovery, the RP sends a request for log records and a mask field, and the TM 13 selects those records which match the enabled parts of the REC field. The RP can thus determine, depending on the nature of the failure, what records are required; eg for a particular recovery supervisor or a particular resource. <IMAGE>
