A square-section tube is rigidly secured against two inside faces of a similar but larger tube by the application of a force applied to one edge of the inner tube and acting towards the diagonally opposite edge. As shown, a bolt 4 is tightened using a handle 5. <IMAGE>

Description

LOCKING DEVICE FOR SQUARE-SECTION TUBING This invention relates to a means of rigidly locking one piece of square-section tubing within the centre void of a larger piece of such tubing.
The locking of one square-section tube in a similar but larger tube has applications to temporary or adjustable fabrications.
Typically the locking action is achieved by a screw which is tightened by hand and presses on one face of the inner tube.
The opposite face of the inner tube is thus caused to press against the inner wall of the outer tube.
Such a method of locking gives rise to two problems: firstly the inner tube may pivot about the point where the screw is applied; secondly the screw acts on a comparatively weak point of the inner tube and will tend to deform it if the screw is overtightened.
According to the present invention a square-section tube is rigidly secured against two inside faces of a similar but larger tube by the application of a force applied to one edge of the inner tube and acting towards the diagonally opposite edge.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows in perspective the two tubes held together.
Figure 2 illustrates in section the relative positions of the tubes and an example of the means by which a diagonal force may be applied.
Referring to the drawings, the inner tube 1 is held against two inside faces of the outer tube 2. The holding force is provided by a bolt 4 which is tightened by hand using handle 5.
The bolt passes through a clearance hole in the edge of the outer tube, tightening against a bush 3 which is welded to the outer tube. A flat has been ground on the edge of the inner tube to accommodate the blunt end of the bolt.

Claims (3)

  1. LOCKING DEVICE FOR SQUARE-SECTION TUBING 1. A means of rigidly securing a square-section tube against two inside faces of a similar but larger tube by the application of a force applied to one edge of the inner tube and acting towards the diagonally opposite edge.
  2. 2. A means of rigidly securing a tube as claimed in Claim 1 wherein either or both tubes may be made of metal, plastic or any other material.
  3. 3. A means of rigidly securing a solid rod within a hollow tube by the means claimed in Claim 1, wherein either the rod or tube or both may be made of metal, plastic or any other material.
