Description
ACCESSORY FOR FISH POND
This invention concerns an accessory for a fish pond.
Many pond owners lose fish stock from their ponds to predators such as and principally herons.
The deterrent of providing a facsimile heron at the pondside favoured by many has not proved entirely satisfactory. The more certain solution of covering the pond with a net has the disadvantages of general unsightliness and the need for removal whenever maintenance such as cleaning of the pond is required.
The present invention is based on the observation that the commencement of operation of a pond fountain acts to scare a heron from the pond.
According to the present invention, then, there is provided an accessory for a fish pond comprising a fountain pump, a sensor adapted to sense a predator in the vicinity of the pond, switch means for the supply of power to the fountain pump and timer means to cause said switch means to close for a predermined period whenever said sensor detects the presence of a predator.
There may be further switch means in parallel with said first mentioned switch means to enable operation of the pump on demand and for an indefinitely extended period.
There may be still further switch means in the series with the switch means aforementioned to disenable operation of the pump.
The sensor may be a passive infra-red sensor.
The optical system of the passive infra-red sensor may be designed to sense (when the sensor is properly installed) the presence of a predator at a height of 50 cm from the ground and along a desired number of angularly spaced lines extending outwardly from the sensor.
The invention will be further apparent from the following description, with reference to the figures of the accompanying drawings, which show, by way of example only, one form of accessory embodying same.
Of the drawings :
Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a typical
fish pond with the accessory
installed;
Figure 2 shows a cross-section through the
installation on the line II - II of
Figure 1;
Figure 3 shows a plan view of the installation
of Figure 1; and
Figure 4 shows a circuit diagram of the
accessory.
Referring now to the drawings, it will be seen that a fish pond 10 is equipped with a fountain 11 powered by a motor-driven pump 12.
Adjacent the pond 10 is a post 13 which mounts a passive infra-red sensor 14 whose optical system is designed to monitor a plurality of angularly spaced lines L extending in a horizontal plane some 50 cm or thereabouts from the ground.
The sensor 14 incorporates a timer 15 which closes a switch 16 to energise the pump 12 for a predetermined period of time - typically of the order of finve minutes - each time the sensor detects a warm body within its "field of view." This would ordinarily be indicative of a predator such as a heron.
Of course, the approach of a human to the pond can be expected to cause operation of the fountain, but this is perceived to be an advantage.
A switch 17 is connected in parallel with the switch 16 to enable operation of the fountain on demand and for any period of time.
A further switch 18 is connected in series with switch 16 to disenable operation of the fountain if required.
Observation has shown that commencement of operation of the fountain is effective in scaring a visiting heron to leave. Additionally of course operation of the fountain disturbs the water surface rendering potential prey within the pond less visible.
It will be appreciated that it is not intended to limit the invention to the above example only, many variations, such as might readily occur to one skilled in the art, being possible, without departing from the scope thereof.
Claims (6)
1. An accessory for a fish pond comprising a fountain pump, a sensor adapted to sense a predator in the vicinity of the pond, switch means for the supply of power to the fountain pump and timer means to cause said switch means to close for a predermined period whenever said sensor detects the presence of a predator.
2. An accessory according to claim 1, including further switch means in parallel with said first mentioned switch means to enable operation of the pump on demand and for an indefinitely extended period.
3. An accessory according to either claim 1 or claims 2, including further switch means in the series with the said first mentioned switch means to disenable operation of the pump.
4. An accessory according to any preceding claim, wherein the sensor is passive infra-red sensor.
5. An accessory according to claim 4, wherein the optical system of the passive infra-red sensor is designed to sense (when the sensor is properly installed) the presence of a predator at a height of 50 cm from the ground and along a desired number of angularly spaced lines extending outwardly from the sensor.
6. An accessory for a fish pond substantially as described herein with reference to and as illustrated by the figures of the accompanying drawings.
