Abstract
A groundworks service kit has a number of inflatable pipe seals 1 and a number of by-pass pipes 2. The kit allows work to be carried out on manholes and inspection chambers without interrupting the flow through them. The inflatable pipe seals 1 are loosely assembled on the by-pass pipe 2 and the ends of the by-pass pipe 2 are inserted into the inlet(s) and outlet of the manhole. The inflatable pipe seals 1 are then inserted into the manhole pipework and pressurised. All flow through the manhole will now pass through the by-pass pipe 2. On completion of maintenance work the inflatable pipe seals 1 are deflated and the kit removed from the manhole. <IMAGE>
Description
GROUNDWORKS SERVICE KIT
This invention relates to a groundworks service kit.
Maintenance work on manholes/inspection chambers often call for dry working conditions even when the manholes/inspection chambers are in service and have flows passing through them.
For example, making a new connection to a manhole at the same invert level as the original inlet pipe.
The accepted practice of blocking the inlet pipe to the manhole and 'overpumping' the resultant liquid backing up in the pipeline calls for pumps and above ground pipework which can be expensive and labour intensive to set up and maintain.
According to the present invention there is provided a groundworks service kit comprising a number of inflatable pipe seals and by-pass pipes.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 Shows an inflatable pipe seal in side elevation.
Figure 2 Shows an inflatable pipe seal in end elevation.
Figure 3 Shows an inflatable pipe seal section AA.
Figure 4 Shows two inflatable pipe seals loosely mounted on a by-pass
pipe.
Figure 5 Shows a manhole in section with the groundworks service kit in
position and the pipe seals inflated.
Referring to drawing figure 4 the manhole service kit is shown in its simplest form for use in a manhole with single inlet and single outlet.
The kit for this application shows the by-pass pipe 2 and slid over it are two inflatable pipe seals 1.
Accidental loss of pipe seals during installation and removal is prevented by securing a rope to the metal D-rings 4.
The kit is lowered into the manhole and the by-pass pipe inserted into the inlet and outlet pipes of the manhole. The inflatable seal is now slid along the by-pass pipe until it fully enters the manhole inlet pipe. The seal is now inflated and all flow has to pass through the by-pass pipe. Similarly the other pipe seal is slid along the by-pass pipe until it fully enters the outlet pipe of the manhole and it then too is inflated.
Gripping and sealing of pipes by the inflatable pipe seal is assisted by the provision of a raised pattern 6 on the internal and external faces of the seal.
Inflation of the inflatable pipe seal is carried out by providing a shraeder type valve 3 in a length of flexible tube 5.
Inflation is by either a foot pump, a hand pump or compressed air.
With both seals inflated it will now be possible to carry out any necessary work within the manhole.
When work is complete the outlet pipe seal is deflated and withdrawn along the by-pass pipe. The inlet pipe seal is then deflated and withdrawn.
The kit is then removed from the manhole, cleaned and stored for further use.
Claims (4)
1. A groundworks service kit comprising a number of inflatable pipe seals and
by-pass pipes.
