Abstract

A vehicle trailer includes chassis members 18, 19 with cross-members 20, 20A, 25, 26, 27, 21 having rollers movable in slots 32, 34 in members 18, 19. Fixed member 21 carries twist locks 23. Members 25, 26, 27 carry twist locks 28, 29, 30 and form part of structure 24 movable by ram 35 between a rear position, in which rear container 40 can be held by the locks on members 25, 26 and forward container can be held by the locks on members 27, 21, and a forward position in which a container is supported by members 25, 26. This allows appropriate positioning of the container in the forward position. An arrangement for a single container is also described. <IMAGE>

Description

IMPROVEMSiTS IN OR RELATING TO VEHICLES Al TRAILERS This invention relates to vehicles and trailers.
According to this invention a trailer has a chassis having fore and aft laterally spaced frame members, fore and aft spaced apertures in the members, transverse members movable in the apertures and carrying container holding means, and means for moving the transverse members forwards and rearwards.
There may be a rear transverse member supported in a rear aperture and two intermediate transverse members supported in the forward aperture.
There may be ram means for moving the transverse members.
There may be structure comprising the transverse members so that the transverse members move together.
The invention includes a vehicle having such a trailer.
The invention may be performed in various ways and two specific embodiments, with possible modifications will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a side view of a vehicle viith se.i- trailer; Fig. 2 is a plan vie of ne seri-trailer; Fig. 3 is a front vie of part of Fig. 2 on An enlarged scale; Fig. 4 is a side view of another arrangement; Fig. 5 is a plan view of p2rt of Fi. 4; and Fig. 6 is a perspective of part of Tig. 4 on an enlarged scle.
An articulated vehicle 10 has a driving or tractor portion 11 with pairs of wheels 12. sei- trailer 13 can be coupled to e portion 11 in known marker by a so called fifth wheel coupling 14. The trailer 13 has pivotable front legs 15 for supporting the trailer when detached fror the portion 11. The trailer 13 has three sets of rear wheels 16 mounted beneath a chassis 17 having two fore and aft laterally spaced I-beams 18, 19 secured together by cross members 20, 20A, and a front transverse member 21 carries a pair of twist locks 23.
A structure 24 has three transverse members 25,26, 27 respectively carrying pairs of twist locks 28, 29, 30.
The member 25 is movable on rollers 31 in slots 32 in the vertical or webs 33 of the I-beams 18, 19; and the members 26, 27 similarly move in slots 34. The structure 24 is moved forwards and rearwards by an hydraulic ram 35 whose cylinder 37 is fixed to crossmember 20A and whose piston 36 is connected to member 26. The ram 35 is powered from. the hydraulic circuit 38 associated with the tractor portion 11.
vith the structure 24 in a rearward positon in the slots 32, 24, two containers 40 can be supported on the trailer, one behind the other, the rear contam- er 40 being held by locks 28, 29 and the forward container 40 by locks 30, 23. As is known, the twist locks can be releasably engaged with mounting corner sockets in the containers. If only one container is to be carried, the ram 35 is energized to move the structure 24 forwards to bring the two rear palrs of twist locks 28, 29 into the appropriate positions In relation to the chassis 17 bearing in rnind the particular load that is being carried and having regard for example to a desired or permitted load on the wheel axles.
The tops of the outer parts 50 of the transverse members 21, 25, 26, 27 are substantially at the same level as the tops 51 of the beams 18, 19.
Fig. 3 is a front view of one of the transverse members 25, 26, 27 showing a top plate 25a slightly above surface 51 and with depending side plates 25b carrying removable bolts 25c on which can rotate rollers 31. Thus if the bolts 25c and nuts 25d are removed, the transverse member can be lifted upwards with structure 24. Plates 39, 39a are welded at the lower and upper edges of the slots 32, 34, the rollers 31 running on the plates 39.
The arrangement of Figs. 4 to 6 is for a single container 40. In this case there are two transverse members 60, 61 carrying twist locks 23 and fixed to structure 62 movable by ram 63 between a rear and a forward position. Again rollers 31 are provided running on plates 39 in slots 32, 34 in webs 33.
The trailer part 13 may have two or three sets of wheels and the tractor part 11 may have two or three sets of wheels. Thus depending on the load and the type of tractor and trailer, the container can be adjusted in position fore and aft to obtain desired permitted loading on the wheel axles.
The arrangements can be used whether the beards 18, 19 are stepped, or not steped (as shown).
A container on the trailer can be inoved rearwards to an unloading position and forwards to a transport position.
