Description

INPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO BOXES.
The present invention relates to a box which has been formed from a flat blank, a flat blank and a method of making a box from a flat blank.
According to one aspect of the present invention a box includes a base and upwardly extending side walls, which box has been formed from a flat blank with at least one first side wall including at least four layers of the blank extending upwardly and side by side over at least part of the length of the first side wall, and each of the layers extending generally from the base to the upper region of the first side wall over at least part of their side by side extent. Such a box is able to withstand considerable crushing forces which may be exerted on the first side wall.
Each of the four layers may extend generally from the base to the upper region of the first side wall over substantially their complete co-extent.
The first side wall may include at least four layers of the blank over substantially the complete length of the first side wall.
At least one of the side by side layers may be directly connected to the base in the region of the bottom of the first side wall and at least three of the other side by side layers may be arranged to co-operate with the base, for instance by abutment with the base.
At least one of the side by side layers may cooperate with another part of the box in the region of the base of the box whereby movement of the side by side layers transverse to the plane of the first side wall is inhibited.
At least one of the side by side layers may cooperate with another part of the box whereby movement, either laterally or pivotally or both in at least one direction, in the plane of the first side wall, is inhibited.
A first one of the side by side layers may be directly connected to the base in the region of the bottom of the first side wall with a second one of the side by side layers being connected to the first layer in the region of the top of the first side wall and extending downwardly therefrom with the further side layers being located between the first and second layers. The further side by side layers may extend up to and co-operate with the surface defining the connection between the first and second side layers, for instance by abutment with that surface. The second side layer may be connected to the first side layer by a pair of spaced folds, one fold being located at the top of the first side layer and the other fold being located at the top of the second side layer.
The spaced folds may be generally at the same elevation and may define between them an upwardly facing support surface which upwardly facing support surface, in use, may be arranged to support the base of a further box. The second one of the side by side layers may co-operate with the base whereby the first and second side by side layers at least are held in position, and that co-operation may be arranged to occur by means of a projecting member on the second side by side layer extending through an opening in the base.
The side by side layers may comprise a first layer connected to the base at a fold at the lower end of the first side, a second layer connected by at least one fold to the first layer in the region of the upper end of the first side wall, a third layer connected by a fold to the second layer in the region of an end of the second layer, and a fourth layer connected by a fold to a second side wall adjacent to the first side wall.
The box may include a third side wall opposed to the first side wall, said third side wall having any of the features of the first side wall.
The box may include at least one upwardly extending tab arranged to co-operate with another box stacked on top in order to limit relative sliding movement. The tab may be located in the region of the four layers of the box and may be an extension of one of the four layers.
According to a further aspect of the present invention a flat blank includes portions arranged to be made up into a box, said portions including a portion arranged to comprise a base of the box and said blank including a plurality of portions arranged to comprise, upon assembly, a first side wall including at least four layers extending upwardly and side by side over at least part of the length of the first side wall, each of the layers being arranged to extend generally from the base to the upper region of the first side wall over at least part of their side by side extent.
The flat blank may include a tab which, when the blank is assembled, is arranged to extend upwardly and cooperate with another box formed from a flat blank to limit relative sliding movement between the boxes.
The present invention also includes a flat blank arranged to be made up into a box having any of the features herein referred to.
According to another aspect of the present invention a method of assembling a flat blank into a box which includes a base and upwardly extending side walls comprises folding portions of the blank such that a first side wall of the box includes at least four layers of the blank extending upwardly and side by side over at least part of the length of the first side wall, each of the layers extending generally from the base to the upper region of the first side wall over at least part of their side by side extent. The present invention includes a box when made by a method as herein referred to. The present invention also includes a blank for use in a method as herein referred to.
The present invention includes any combination of the herein described features or limitations.
The present invention may be carried into practice in various ways but one embodiment will now be described, by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a plan view of a cardboard blank 10.
The blank 10 includes a rectangular base 12 to which opposed side walls 14 and opposed end walls 16 are connected by fold lines 18 and 20 respectively. Only one of each opposed walls are shown.
A side flap 22 is connected to each end of both side walls 14 by a fold line 24 and an end flap 26 is connected to the top of both end walls by a pair of spaced parallel fold lines 28 and 30. A flap 32 is connected to each end of each end flap 26 by a fold line 34. All of the fold lines are intended to be valley folds.
In order to assemble the box, the opposed side walls 14 are pivoted upwardly and inwardly about the fold lines 18 until they extend substantially vertically. The end flaps 26 are then pivoted inwardly about the fold lines 24 until they extend generally over the fold line 20 of the end wall 16.
The end walls 16 are then moved upwardly and inwardly about the fold line 20 and, at the same time, the flaps 32 are moved inwardly about the fold lines 34 and the end flap is moved inwardly, initially upwardly and then downwardly about the fold lines 28 and 30.
Each end wall 16 ultimately extends vertically upwardly from its fold line 20 and lies against the outwardly facing surface of an adjacent side flap 22.
Each end flap 26 extends vertically downwardly from the fold line 30 and extends parallel to the side flap 22 but is spaced therefrom by the parallel flap 32. The end flaps 26 are able to be spaced from the end walls 16 and yet still extend parallel thereto by the provision of the spaced folds 28 and 30, which may be approximately 25 mm apart.
The end flaps are held in place by a pair of spaced initially outwardly extending but ultimately downwardly extending tabs 36 projecting into associated recesses 38 formed in the base 12. The side flaps 22 and consequently the side walls 14 may be retained in place simply by being trapped between the end walls and the end flaps.
Alternatively or additionally, the side flaps 22 may include a tab 40, shown in chain lines, which extends upwardly into an opening 42 located between the fold lines 28 and 30 with outwards movement of the side flaps 22 being prevented or restricted by abutment with the sides of the opening 42.
The box may be returned from the assembled condition to the flat configuration shown by reversing the above sequence of operations.
It will be appreciated that the above described sequence of folding is chosen for ease of explanation and any appropriate sequence could be used which enabled the flat pack to reach the assembled configuration.
The box, when assembled, includes a quadruple thickness of cardboard extending from the top to the bottom of the end wall comprising the end wall 16, the side flaps 22, the end flaps 26 and the flaps 32. The side flaps 22, end flaps 26 and the flaps 32 abut the base 12 and the side flaps 22 and the flaps 32 abut the downwardly facing surface located between the fold lines 28 and 30. The upwardly facing surface between the fold lines 28 and 30 may provide a support for the base of a box stacked on top. Consequently an extremely strong box is provided which may be able to have a considerable weight placed thereon, for instance to achieve a greater height of stacking. The flap 32 includes a tab 44 which, when the blank is formed into a box, projects upwardly through the opening 42 beyond the plane of the upwardly facing surface between the fold lines 28, 30. The projecting portion of the tab 44 extends into the opening 38 of a box stacked on top to prevent or restrict relative transverse sliding movement between the stacked boxes.
If desired, either or both of the side flaps 22 or the flaps 32 may extend across substantially half of the length of the end wall 16 whereby the quadruple thickness extends across substantially the complete extent of the end walls 16.
