Abstract

A method for enabling a flag or banner to be restored to a near ex-works condition upon washing comprises applying to the flag or banner or component parts thereof a fluorocarbon solution, such as Scotchguard (RTM), removing any excess solution (such as by passing through rollers) and drying the flag or banner or component parts at a predetermined temperature. The solution may be applied in a vat or by spraying. The treatment is preferably carried out prior to the sewing together of pieces of the flag.

Description

FLAGS AND BANNERS This invention relates to flags and banners.
Flags and banners which in most cases are located outside are open to pollution in many ways from the atmosphere.
The flags and banners become very dirty, and it is difficult and more often than not impossible to restore them to their original ex-works condition through laundering and other cleaning processes.
The invention seeks to provide an improved form of flag or banner and a method of producing the flag or banner, which will enable the flag or banner to be restored to a near new condition upon washing or other cleaning means.
According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided a method for enabling a flag or banner to be restored to a near ex-works condition upon washing, the method comprising the steps of applying to the flag or banner or to component parts thereof a fluorocarbon solution, removing any excess solution from the flag or banner or component parts, and drying said flag or banner or component parts at a predetermined temperature.
Preferably, the flag or banner or component parts will be soaked in said fluorocarbon solution for a predetermined period of time.
The soaking of the flag or banner or component parts will preferably be by means of passing the flag or banner or component parts through a vat containing the fluorocarbon solution, and the excess solution will preferably be removed by passing the flag or banner or component parts through one or more sets of rollers.
The drying of the flag or banner or component parts will preferably be carried out by passing the flag or banner or component parts through a curing oven at a temperature of 150 C.
According to a second aspect of the present invention, there is provided a flag or banner having a coating of or being impregnated with a fluorocarbon solution.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the flag or banner or the component parts of the flag or banner will be passed through a vat containing a fluorocarbon solution, whereafter the flag or banner or component parts will be passed through one or more sets of rollers so as to remove any excess solution from the flag or banner or the component parts thereof. The flag or banner or the component parts will then be passed through a curing oven at a temperature of 1500C for a period of one minute.
Whilst the above temperature and time are those used in a preferred embodiment of the invention , it will be appreciated that these may be varied. Thus the flag or banner or the component parts may be treated for a period of 0.5 to 10 minutes at a temperature in the range of 1000C to 2000C.
In its application to printed flags or banners - which are made from a single piece of material - the fluorocarbon solution will be applied after the printing of the flag or banner, and in its application to sewn flags or banners which are made up of a number of pieces of material - the fluorocarbon solution will be applied to said pieces prior to said pieces being sewn together to form the flag or banner.
An example of the fluorocarbon solution to be used in a method according to the invention is that manufactured and sold under the name of SCOTCHGUARD (RTM), although it will be appreciated that other similar solutions may be used.
Instead of the flag or banner or component parts being passed through a vat of fluorocarbon solution, the said solution may be applied by spraying the flag or banner or component parts with the fluorocarbon solution so as to impregnate the flag or banner or component parts. However it is thought that such a method would not be 'ozone friendly' due to the CFC gases used in many aerosol applicators.
With a flag or banner in accordance with the invention, the flag or banner may be restored to a near ex-works condition upon washing or upon being subjected to other cleaning processes, due to the coating of fluorocarbon solution on the flag or banner. The fluorocarbon solution prevents dirt etc from becoming ingrained in the flag or banner, and thus the flag or banner is washable so as to restore it to a near pristine condition.

CLAIMS:
1. A method for enabling a flag or banner to be restored to a near ex-works condition upon washing, the method comprising the steps of applying to the flag or banner or component parts thereof a fluorocarbon solution, removing any excess solution from the flag or banner or component parts, and drying said flag or banner or component parts at a predetermined temperature.
2. A method in accordance with Claim 1, wherein the flag or banner or component parts are soaked in said fluorocarbon solution for a predetermined period of time.
3. A method in accordance with Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherein the soaking of the flag or banner or component parts is achieved by passing the flag or banner or the component parts through a vat containing said solution.
4. A method in accordance with any of Claims 1 to 3, wherein the excess solution is removed by passing the flag or banner or component parts through one or more sets of rollers.
5. A method in accordance with any of Claims 1 to 4, wherein the drying of the flag or banner or component parts is carried out by passing the flag or banner or component parts through a curing oven at a temperature in the range of 1000C to 2000C for a period od 0.5 to 10 minutes.
6. A method in accordance with any of Claims 1 to 5, wherein in its application to a printed flag or banner the fluorocarbon solution is applied after the printing of the flag or banner but prior to the sewing of the flag or banner.
7. A method in accordance with any of Claims 1 to 5, wherein in its application to sewn flags or banners the fluorocarbon solution is applied to pieces of the flag or banner prior to said pieces being sewn together to form said flag or banner.
8. A method in accordance with Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherein the fluorocarbon solution is applied by spraying the flag or banner or component parts.
9. A method for enabling a flag or banner to b2 restored to a near ex-works condition upon washing substantially as herein described.
10. A flag or banner having a coating of or being impregnated with a fluorocarbon solution.
11. A flag or banner substantially as herein described.
