Abstract

The bush 16 journalling an idler gear 14 in a drive train between the drive shaft 12 and lubrication pump is impregnated with PTFE and exposed to the sump for splash lubrication. <IMAGE>

Description

IMPROVEMENTS IN I.C. ENGINES This invention relates to I.C. engines and particularly oil pump drives therefor. A conventional arrangement has a gear train including a pinion on the crankshaft and another driving the pump with at least one intermediate idler gear. The pump delivers into a gallery leading through the engine block first to the oil filter, so that all parts of the engine may be lubricated with the oil distributed from the filter. however, the idler gear, that is the bearing supporting the idler gear, is difficult to lubricate because of its location.
One possibility for the idler gear is to provide a special return gallery from the filter leading (only) to the idler gear. This is regarded as inconvenient and relatively expensive. Another alternative is to rely upon splash lubrication, that is arrange for a portion of the shaft on which the idler gear is journalled, or with which it is fast, to be exposed to the sump so that oil mist as a result of the usual splashing from the rotating cranks in the sump will cause some oil to reach the journal surfaces for this lubrication. However this is found to be an unreliable method of lubricating this idler gear. Alternatively, unfiltered oil may be bled direct from the pump which is simple and inexpensive, but has the inevitable disadvantage of using unfiltered oil and may result in high rates of wear.So all of these solutions now seem to be equally unsatisfactory, albeit for different reasons.
The object of the invention is to provide a new solution to the problem.
According to the invention we provide a low friction material coating on a journal bush for the idler gear.
It is believed that due to the location of the gear the oil mist will then be sufficient for lubrication.
Preferably PTFE is used, and most conveniently in the form of a coating or impregnation on a bush used to journal a stub shaft integral with the idler pinion itself and rotatable in a bore in a timing cover which also locates the pump.
One embodiment of the invention is illustrated with reference to the accompanying drawing. In the drawing the reference 10 indicates a drive gear mounted on a shaft 12 and located in a so-called timing case. Idler gear 14 is meshed with the drive gear 10 and also with the pump drive (not shown). The gear 14 is supported on a bush 16 carried on a spindle 18 fast in the block 20, and the idler is retained in position axially by the usual washer and circlip arrangement 22. In accordance with the invention, the bush 16 is impregnated with PTFE.
