Abstract
A multifunction circuit tester (1) includes an electronic amplifier circuit and a signal generator (7). The signal generator (7) can be used as a signal injector to detect faults in an amplifier circuit when connected to a tip (15) and a contact plate (11). Continuity between two points in an electrical circuit when tested (11, 15) will be indicated by an LED (8) and buzzer, (17). The amplifier circuit makes it possible to detect a high voltage not exceeding 600 voltage AC on a conductor without having to touch the conductor directly. <IMAGE>
Description
Multifunction festpen
This invention relates to testpens.
Testtens are well known voltage indicator which comprise a neon buib with resistor housed in a serewdriver. This voltage indicator is only suitable for testing AC voltage, There is a special type of test pen known as a testing serewdriver in which a wire is attached to the testing serewdriver, which enabies it to detect AC/DC voltage in the electric supply source and determine the polarity + or - at a glance in the DC voltage circuit.
Testpens as we know can only be used to detect AC voltage in the electric supply and some other Testpens can used to detect
AC/DC Voltage and polarity.
According to the present invention the Multifunction Testpen combines the handy shape of a Test Pen and has its own source of power like a multitester. however the invention also has a built-in minute electronic amplifier circuit which makes it possible to detect high voltage not exceeding 600 volt AC without having to touch the conductor directly. The testing of silicon semiconductor such as Rectifier and the electrical continuity test between two points is indicated by the light emitting diode (LED) or busser or mini speaker which is more sensitive than the neon buib in a normal testpen. An@ther object of the invention is that it has a built in signal generator which generates a signal in a form of either a tone or a musical tone.
In order that the present invention may be more readily understood the following description is given. Reference will be made to the accompanying drawing in which :
Fig 1 is an exploded view of the multifunctifunction testpen.
Fig 2 shows a side view of the multifunction testpon.
Fig 3 shows the schematic diagram of the multifunction testpen
Fig 4 is an explodet wiew of the testpen cap.
The multifunction testpen consists of a testpen body 1 made of transparent plastic to show the content of the testpen as shown in Fig 1. The testpen houses a piece of printed circult board (P.C.B) 2, Two button battery cells 3, Two conductor springs ; one being a compressor spring 4 and the other being a battery spring 5. Mounted on the P.C.B 2 is an electronic amplifier circuit. Signal generator transistor or I.C. 7 and a Light
Emitting Diode (LED) 8 or mini speaker as an indicator. The power supply or the circuit t is supplied by two button ceiis 3.
The two button cells are connected in series and the negative
Supply is connected to the P.C.B 2 by means of a metal link 9.
The positive supply is linked to the battery spring 5 which is linked to the conductor sensor plate 10 and conductor testpen senser 11. When the conductor sensor plate 10 makes contact with the conductor wire plate 12 which is soldered onte the
P.C.B. 2, the positive supply will then flow through the
P.C.B. 2. The conductor sensor plate 10 and testpen conductor sensor 11 are in contact together onto the testpen cap 13. The testpen cap 13 is made of non-conducting materials. The compressor spring 4 act as a conducting link between the P.C.B 2 and the metal conductor steel 14. This metal conductor steel 14 is designed for use as a testpen tip 15 and also as a serewdriver which is moulded onto the testpen body.
A round piece of plastic 16 mounted on top of the P.C.B 3 by means of a metal link 9 to hold the button cells 3 and P.C.B 2 in position.
Some of the practical function application and description of the multifunction testpen is illustrated on page 4 to 7.
Function 1 : To test an amplifier circuit while doing repair 1. Place finger on testpen sensor and the testpen tip on the input of the amplifier to be tested. Make sure the power supply of the amplifier to be tested is "on". Place another finger on the amplifier metal chassis of the earth.
2. The testpen will produce a signal of either tone or musical tone which is injected into the input of the amplifier.
A musical tone or tone will be heard on the output which are the speakers.
3. A distorted sound or no sound at the ouput shows that part of the amplifier components is faulty.
Function 2 : For testing high voltage at a vehicles ignition system.
l. Touch the ignition cable of the car with testpen sensor or testpen tip as shown in illustration.
2. Turn key to start engine.
3. If the LED on the testpen flickers it indicates the ignition electric system is functioning.
Function 3 : For testing power point.
1. Insert testpen tip of testpen into the AC power supply outlet as shown in illustration.
2. Hold the testpen while finger is not touching the metal part on top of the testpen (testpen sensor 11).
3. If LED lights up, this indicates that AC voltage is present.
Function 4 : For testing switch of good condition.
1. Place finger and testpen tip on the terminal pins of the switch as illustrated.
2. The LED should light up when the switch is turned "ON" and LED should not light up when switch is turn to "OFF".
Function 5 : For testing silicon rectifier of good condition and to determine the anode and cathode of the rectifier.
Function 6 : For testing + or - polarity of DC supply as illustrated.
1. Place, finger on testpen sensor, testpen tip on one of the two terminals and another finger on the other terminal.
2. The LED lights up to show the + polarity.
Function 7 : For testing continuity of wire.
1. Place, finger on testpen sensor, testpen tip on one end of the wire and another finger on the other end of the wire.
2. The LED lights up to indicate continuity.
