Abstract

This invention relates to a torch and camera assembly particularly, but not exclusively, suitable for use in security situations, eg in the recordal of the movement of criminals. Accordingly, the invention provides a torch 10 and camera 15 assembly arranged such that the beam of the torch 10 impinges upon an area to which the lens of the camera 15 is directed in use. The torch 10 and camera 15 may be contained within separate housings which are connectable together to form the assembly or within a single housing 20. The assembly provides a first switch 60 for switching the torch 10 on or off, and a second switch 65 for activating the camera 15. The assembly may further provide a visible laser 90 arranged such that the beam of the laser impinges upon a portion of the area to which the lens of the camera 15 is directed in use. <IMAGE>

Description

A Torch and Camera Assemblv This invention relates to a torch and camera assembly particularly, but not exclusively, suitable for use in security situations.
At night security staff and/or police patrol areas where criminals may be active. Normally a torch is used to check if the area is clear. However, if a criminal is located it is often rather difficult for the security staff and/or police to get a clear view of him/her as he/she tries to evade capture, and therefore to later give a sufficiently good description of him/her.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to obviate or mitigate the aforementioned problem.
Accordingly, the invention provides a torch and camera assembly arranged such that the beam of the torch impinges upon an area to which the lense of the camera is directed in use.
The torch and camera may be contained within separate housings which are connectable together to form the assembly.
Alternatively the torch and camera may be contained within a single housing.
Preferably, the assembly provides a first switch for switching the torch on or off, and a second switch for activating the camera.
Preferably also, there is provided on the assembly a flash unit which operates in synchronisation with the camera.
The lense of the camera may be of a fixed exposure type or alternatively a dual exposure type to provide close and distant exposures on the one negative. Alternatively the camera may be of the autofocus type.
The camera may be of the infra-red kind, in order to take thermal image type photographs.
Preferably, the camera has an autowind facility, and may be of the disc type.
Preferably also, the torch and camera are powered from a common electrical source, for example, a rechargeable battery or batteries.
The assembly may be locatable within a holster fixed, for example, to a vehicle. This may allow the assembly to be used by a passenger in the vehicle. Further, the holster may provide means by which rechargeable batteries, used to power the torch and/or camera, can be recharged by the battery of the vehicle. This would ensure that the batteries were fully charged for use.
The assembly may further provide a visible laser arranged such that the beam of the laser impinges upon a portion of the area to which the lens of the camera is directed in use.
This allows a user to more easily orientate the camera lense to the correct direction in order to take a photograph of the criminal.
The laser may be contained within a separate housing to the torch and/or camera which housings are connectable together to form the assembly.
Alternatively, the torch, camera and laser may be contained within a single housing.
Preferably, the assembly provides a third switch for switching on the laser.
Preferably also, the common electrical source is also used to power the laser.
The invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings which are: Fig. 1 a perspective view from the top and to one side of a torch and camera assembly according to the present invention; and Fig. 2 a schematic diagram of the assembly of Fig. 1 in use.
Referring to Fig. 1 there is provided a torch and camera assembly, generally designated 5, comprising a torch 10 and camera 15.
In this embodiment, the torch 10 and camera 15 are contained within a substantially rectangular housing 20 having a handle 25 on an upper surface thereof, the camera 15 being positioned below the torch 10.
On a side surface 26 of the housing 20 there is provided a typical torch light output unit 30 comprising a bulb 35, located substantially at the apogee of a concave mirrored surface 40. Also provided is a diffuser 45 which closes the concave surface 40.
An input lense 50 of the camera 15 is provided on the same side surface 26 of the housing 20 at a position below that of the torch unit 30. Further provided on the side surface 26 at a position between the torch unit 30 and the lense 50 is a flash unit 55 which operates in synchronisation with the camera.
On or near the upper surface of the handle 25, at the end of the handle 25.nearest the side surface 26, there are provided first and second switches 60, 65. The first switch 60 switches the torch on or off, and the second switch 65 activates the camera 15.
The torch 10 and camera 15 are powered by batteries (not shown) located within the housing 20. The batteries may be of a rechargeable type, and means provided on a side of the housing 20 to connect the batteries to a recharge unit.
The internal arrangements of the torch and of the camera are not described herein in detail as these would be apparent to any skilled persons.
The housing S may be made in one piece from a metal or a plastics material and may be coated in rubber, or the like, to increase the ruggedness of the housing 5.
Referring to Fig. 2 a security person 70 can use the torch and camera assembly 5 to illuminate a darkened area to be patrolled by holding the assembly 5 by the handle 25 and switching on the torch 10. The torch 10 will emit a beam 75 which may be moved around the darkened area by the security person 70 moving the assembly 5. If a criminal 80 is within the region of the area illuminated by the torch 10 then the beam 75 will impinge upon him/her. In this way the security person can locate the criminal 80.
Having located the criminal 80 the security person 70 can then use the camera 15 to take a photograph or series of photographs of the criminal 80 by depressing switch 65, the line of sight of the camera 15 being illuminated by the beam 75 and also the flash unit 55. It could, of course, be envisaged that the beam 75 was of sufficient intensity that the flash unit 55 was not necessary.
The torch and camera assembly 5 hereinbefore described may also incorporate a visible laser 85, an output lense 90 of which is located on the side surface 26 of the housing 20.
A third switch 95 is also provided on or near the upper surface of the handle 25 at the end thereof nearest the side surface 26. The third switch 95 switches the laser 85 on or off. Alternatively, the first switch 60 may also control the -laser 85.
In use, either in darkened surroundings when the torch 30 is required to be used, or in lit surroundings when the torch 30 is not required, when a criminal 80 is located the security person 70 can switch on the laser 85.
The security person 70 can then use the laser beam (not shown) to orientate the assembly 5 towards the criminal 80.
In this way the laser 85 can be used to line up the camera lense 50 with the criminal 80 in order that the resulting photograph has the criminal 80 centred thereon.
The embodiment of the invention hereinbefore described is given by way of example only, and is not meant to limit the scope of the invention in any way. Various modifications and adaptations may therefore be envisaged. For example the assembly may comprise a torch and a camera which are connectable together such that either may be used separately or when connected to the other. Further, a single switch may be provided to switch the torch on or off and also to activate the camera, the camera having a control circuit which makes it take photographs at predetermined intervals when the torch is switched on.
