Abstract

A bait hock retainer which releases on impact with the water after casting comprises a body member (4) having a stub (5) over which a rubber sleeve (6) may be fitted with the cast line (1) being trapped between sleeve (6) and stub (5) by frictional engagement. The cast line (1) extends through an aperture (10a) in the body member (4) and passes through a slot shaped aperture (7) which is provided in a hook shaped extension (8). A split shot bead (9) is positioned at the end of the body member (4) adjacent the elongate slot (7). The body member (4) carries a dome shaped end (10) which serves to shield the baited hook (3) from drag forces when projected through the air and also to provide a suitable force acting in the direction A when the member impacts the surface of the water. Following impact against the water surface the body member (4) moves in direction A and the split shot (9) rides along the surface of the projecting part (8) causing the baited hook (3) to be positively disengaged from the projection (8) and thus to be released. <IMAGE>

Description

TITLE Angler's Tackle This invention relates to angler's tackle and is concerned with a means for retaining one or more bait hooks and associated traces in a fixed position during the casting operation. The invention is principally for use in angling from a beach or shore using a relatively heavy sinker weight and plurality of hooks each on individual trace lines attached to the main cast assembly.
Because of the distance involved in casting from a beach it often happens that bait becomes detached during the initial cast due to high velocity and thus high forces involved during the casting.
This invention seeks to provide a means for retaining a bait hook in a relatively fixed position during the cast but which allows release of the hook and trace on or after impact with the water. The invention also provides a cast assembly wherein the or each separate hook and trace may be retained in position during casting. This invention further provides a means of aerodynamically shielding the bait on a hook.
According to this invention there is provided a means for retaining a bait hook carried by a trace line in position on a cast line, the means comprising a body member frictionally slidable along the cast line and having a hook shaped lateral extension, said hook shaped extension having a slot through which the cast line passes, whereby said cast line may be displaced with respect to the hook shaped extension to dislodge a bait hook from engagement with the said hook shaped extension.
Preferably a stub is provided integral with the body member and, in use, lying in juxtaposed parallel relationship with the cast line.
The stub preferably includes a cylindrical rubber sleeve to trap the cast line against the stub and to form the frictional connection between the cast line and body member.
This invention also provides a cast assembly comprising a cast line, one end thereof being adapted to receive a sinker weight, the other end being for connection with the rod line, a trace line carrying a bait hook at one end and connected with the cast line at the other end, a body member means having a hook shaped lateral extension with a slot or elongate aperture through which the cast line passes, the body member frictionally engaging the cast line, the arrangement being such that when the assembly impacts a water surface the cast line is displaced laterally in the slot to dislodge the bait hook from engagement with the hookshaped extension.
Optionally a further one or plurality of trace lines are positioned above the first trace line and of which each bait hook is engageable with a respective and an appropriate hook-shaped extension of a body member.
In a preferred embodiment the body member has a conical, hemispherical or other shaped shield part with the nose thereof directed towards the sinker weight end of the cast line when in use.
The invention is further explained by reference to the accompanying drawings showing embodiments by way of examples only.
In the drawings: Figure 1 shows a means according to this invention in side elevation, Figure 2 shows the means in end view from A, Figure 2a shows a modified means in end view from A, Figure 3 shows a further modification of clip, Figure 4 shows the means installed on a cast line with sinker weight, Figure 5 shows the mechanism of bait hook release, and Figure 6 shows a perspective view of the means of Figures 1, 2, 4 and 5.
An object of the preferred embodiments of this invention is to provide a shield for both wind resistance and water impact protection as well as a bait hook retaining means.
The general arrangement and operation of one or more clip devices serving to retain the baited hook during the casting operation is disclosed in 2170082. The accompanying drawings show a single baited hook retaining clip but a number of such clips may be disposed serially in co-operating relationship along the length of an angler's cast line.
Referring to Figures 1, 4 and 5 of the drawings in particular, an angler's cast line 1 extends in the direction A towards the angler's rod and in the direction B towards the sinker weights. A separate trace line 2 is connected by one end to the cast line 1 and by the other end to a bait hook 3 on which a suitable bait is impaled (not shown). With beach angling in particular it is necessary to project the baited hook or hooks a considerable distance and this entails the use of a heavy sinker weight with considerable forces and air velocities occurring during the casting operation, accompanied by rapid de-acceleration when the sinker weight impacts the water surface. To prevent the bait being torn from the hook 3 a means is provided which comprises a body member 4 having a stub 5 over which a rubber sleeve 6 may be fitted with the cast line 1 being trapped between sleeve 6 and stub 5 by frictional engagement. The cast line 1 extends through an aperture or slot 10a in the body member 4 and passes through a slot shaped aperture 7 which is provided in a hook shaped extension 8. A split shot bead 9 is positioned at the end of the body member 4 adjacent the elongate slot 7. The body member 4 carries a dome shaped end 10 which serves to shield the baited hook 3 from drag forces when projected through the air and also to provide a suitable force acting in the direction A when the member impacts the surface of the water.Due to the frictional engagement formed by the rubber sleeve 6 and following impact against the water surface the body member 4 moves in direction A and the split shot 9 rides along the surface of the projecting part 8 to take up the position shown in broken lines (see also Figure 5). This movement of the cast line 1 laterally in the slot 7 causes the baited hook 3 to be positively disengaged from the projection 8 and thus to be released. It will be appreciated that some form of positive acting release is very desirable because once the angler has effected the cast he has no way of knowing whether the baited hook has released from the body member 4 or not. This arrangement, as tests have shown, therefore provides a considerable improvement over the prior art.
Figure 2a shows a modified embodiment in which the extension part 8 is in the form of a U-shaped member enabling the cast line 1 to be inserted into the slot 7 rather than being threaded therethrough. A suitable slot may also be provided in the cap part 10 so that only the rubber sleeve 6 need be pre-threaded on to the line 1.
It will be appreciated that the line 1 will remain in the position shown by the broken lines after water impact due to friction exerted by the sleeve 6. Thus the free floating trace lines 2 will not be able to snag with the hook extension 8 once the bait hooks have been deployed.
A modified embodiment is shown in Figure 3, this being generally similar and like reference numerals are applied. The principal difference with this embodiment is that the body member 4 with the extension 8 is arranged to be pivoted so that on release this part moves to the position shown in dotted lines. The elongate slot 7 within the extension 8 may be open eo that the line releases completely.
Figure 4 shows an embodiment according to an alternative aspect of this invention wherein the arrangement is as described previously and like reference numerals have been applied to the figure, but with the difference that the body member 4 travels along the line 1 until the abutment 9 is reached. This embodiment may omit the slot 7.
This embodiment incorporates the cap 10 serving to shield the bait and provide for release of the baited hook but optionally without the feature of positive displacement of the hook from the projecting part 8 by the line 1.
The simple construction according to this invention has resulted in completely reliable release of the baited hooks in all practical tests, as well as providing sufficient aerodynamic shielding of the bait during the casting operation.
