Abstract

Electrical apparatus has two parallel stator magnets 11, 12 providing two pairs of like poles and the rotor has two electromagnets 15, 16 on opposite sides of a plane containing rotor axis 14 between and transverse to the stator magnets. The coils of magnets 15, 16 are in series and are wound to produce unlike poles nearer the axis 14. C D are electrical input or output points. The stator magnet be substituted by electro-magnets. The rotor may have a number of axially spaced pairs of electromagnetic coils (Fig. 3 not shown). <IMAGE>

Description

IKPROvsssslS IN OR RELATING TO H1ECTRlCAL APPARATUS This invention relates to electrical apparatus.
According to this invention electrical apparatus comprises a stator magnet assembly providing two spaced pairs of poles, the poles in each pair being of like polarity, and a rotor assembly rotatable about an axis between and transverse to the stator assembly, the rotor assembly comprising two electromagnets respectively on opposite sides of a plane containing the rotor axis, the coils of the electromagnets being in series and substantially coaxial, the electromagnets being arranged when energized to have magnetic poles of opposite polarity nearer the axis.
The rotor assembly may comprise a plurality of axially spaced axially aligned pairs of said two electromagnets, with the coils on said one side being in series and the coils on the other side being in series and the coils on the one side together being in series with the coils on the other side together.
The stator assembly may comprise two parallel permanent magnets at right angles to the axis, the rotor electromagnets being within the axial extent of the permanent magnets.
The permanent magnets may be replaced by electromagnets.
The invention may be performed in various ways and one specific embodiment with possible modifications will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a plan view of electrical apparatus; Fig. 2 is a side view of Fig. 1 with part omitted; and Fig. 3 is a side view of a modification.
The electrical apparatus 10 comprises two stator permanent magnets 11, 12 which are parallel and with like poles nearest each other so as to provide two pairs of spaced poles, the poles in each pair being of like polarity. Between the stator magnets is a rotor assembly 13 which can rotate about axis 14 which is midway between the centre points of the magnets 11, 12 and at right angles to them.
The rotor assembly comprises structure mounting two confronting electromagnets 15, 16 respectively on opposite sides of a plane containing the axis 14 and respectively comprising coils 15a, 16a wound on armatures 16b, 16b. As shown the coils 15a, 16a are coaxial and confined within the axial extent of the magnets 11, 12. The coils are wound so that they are in the same sense (i.e. both clockwise or both anti-clockwise) as seen in the direction of arrow A (Fig. 1), so that the coils provide magnetic poles of unlike polarity nearer the axis 14. The coils are connected in series as shown.
The inner end of coil 1Sa and the inner end of coil 16a are connected to a slip ring or commutator.
Thus when a current flows through the coils in a direction from C to D or D to C the electromagnets produce unlike poles facing each other at the inner ends of the magnets 15, 16.
As seen in Fig. 2 the electromagnets and stator magnets are coplanar.
Either the apparatus is used as a motor, in which case electric voltage is applied at points C, D to cause the rotor assembly to rotate about axis 14; or the apparatus is operated as an electric generator in which case a motor rotates the rotor assembly about axis 14 and electric current can be drawn from points ,D.
There (ig. 3) may be a plurality of axially spaced axially aligned such pairs of electromagnets in the rotor assembly, with all the coils 1Sa on the same side of the plane containing the axis and all the coils 16a on the other side.
The set of coils 1Sa are in series with each other and the set of coils 16a are in series with each other, the set of coils la being in series with the set of coils 16a. All the coils are confined within the axial extent of the stator magnets.
The permanent magnets 11, 12 may be replaced by electromagnets.
