Gas analysis.-Combustible ingredients of the waste gases from furnaces and internal-combustion engines are continuously measured by an electrically heated catalytic wire made of an alloy of the platinum group (e.g., Pt-Ir, Pd-Ir, or Pt-Rh) held taut, as by a spring, and so switched into a measuring device that its resistance can be continuously read on a measuring instrument or recorded by it. As shown straight or spiral wires 9, 10 of the alloy are held taut by springs 7, 8 and arranged in pipes 2, 1, the pipe 1 containing air and the gases under test being circulated through the pipe 2; the wires are arranged in a Wheatstone bridge containing a source of current 18 and a measuring or recording instrument 17.
