Description
"Decorative Members"
This invention relates to decorative members for attachment to clothing belts or straps or other articles of clothing, such as braces, having generally the shape of a belt or strap.
According to the present invention there is provided a decorative member for attachment to a clothing
r belt or strap or other article of clothing having generally the shape of a belt or strap, wherein the decorative member is in the form of a laminar sheet having apertures through which the belt or strap or other article of clothing may be threaded to attach the decorative member thereto.
It is preferred that the apertures in the decorative member are in the form of slots having lengths slightly greater than the article of clothing to which the decorative member is to be attached and widths slightly greater than the thickness of said article of clothing.
However it may be desirable for the dimensions of the slots to be made greater than the maximum dimensions of any article of clothing to which the decorative member is intended to be attached as this will then enable the particular decorative member to be attached to articles of clothing in a wide range of sizes.
Furthermore it is preferred that the apertures are located adjacent opposite edges of the decorative member, and that, in the case of these apertures being slots, the slots are parallel to one another.
The decorative member may have a decorative pattern applied thereto by printing or by some other process. The pattern may be representative of an article, such as a car for example, and/or of a promotional symbol or item.
In addition or alternatively the decorative member may have a decorative shape. The decorative shape may also be representative of an article and/or of a promotional symbol or item, and may be chosen to match a decorative pattern applied to the member.
Preferably the sheet from which the decorative member is formed is shaped to have a main portion to which the decorative pattern or shape is applied and two tabs in the plane of the main portion and having respective apertures therein through which the article of clothing may be threaded.
The decorative member may be formed by being cut or stamped from a larger sheet of any suitable material, such as a plastics material, metal, card or leather.
In the case in which the decorative member is formed from plastics material, it is preferred that it is formed from a foamed plastics material, such as PVC, which is conveniently of a type used for cushioned floor coverings.
The invention also relates to a blank from which the decorative member may be formed by cutting or pressing.
In order that the invention may be more fully understood, a decorative member in accordance with the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the drawing in which the single figure shows the decorative side of the member.
The illustrated decorative member 1 has a design applied thereto which is representative of the appearance of a Marmite jar ("Marmite" is a Registered Trade Mark).
It will be well understood that similar articles may be provided in accordance with the invention having other designs applied thereto of a promotional nature or otherwise.
The decorative member 1 is formed by stamping from a sheet of foamed PVC material such as is used for cushioned floor coverings, and has a thickness of 1 to 3mm. Furthermore it is shaped to have a main portion 2 having generally the shape of a Marmite jar, and two tabs 3 and 4 having slots 5 and 6 therein. An ornamental pattern representative of the appearance of a Marmite jar is also applied to the main portion 2 by printing, the printing process preferably being carried out prior to stamping of the decorative member from a larger sheet.
When the decorative member 1 is to be fitted to a belt or other article of clothing, such as braces, the belt is threaded through one of the slots 5 and 6 before being passed behind the main portion 2 (so that the belt does not obscure the decorative design when viewed from the front) and is then being threaded through the other of the slots 5 and 6. It will be appreciated that, when attached to the belt, the decorative member 1 will lie flat against the belt, and hence, when the belt is worn, the front of the decorative member will be readily visible to present a decorative appearance.
The ornamental pattern may also be applied to the decorative member in other ways, for example by painting or by application of a transfer thereto, or even by fixing a ready printed label thereto with an adhesive.
In another embodiment of the invention the decorative member is formed from a sheet of cardboard.
This form of decorative member is particularly suitable as a promotional item, and may be supplied as a pattern on a larger sheet of cardboard, optionally forming part of a packet, from which the decorative member can be cut or pressed (where suitable perforations are provided).
In another embodiment of the invention one or more parts of the decorative member are made of greater thickness than the remainder of the decorative member, either by moulding or by application of a further layer of material where required using an adhesive. Alternatively one or more parts of the member may be caused to stand out from the rest of the member, as by embossing for example.
Thus the main portion 2 may be made generally thicker than the tabs 3 and 4, and optionally the main portion 2 may have a groove in its back for accommodating the belt (in which case the groove preferably extends as far as the slots 5 and 6).
