Abstract

A joint between a pair of tubes (Figure 1) has one tube 16 provided with a flattened end and extending transversely of the length of the other tube 10. A bolt 12 extends diametrically of the other tube 10 and through a hole in the flattened end. The flattened end is enclosed in a plastics sleeve which has a projection so that it also encloses the nut so as to protect the same against weather and also hold the nut against turning. <IMAGE>

Description

JOINTS This invention relates to joints made between pairs of tubes, or the like, where one of the tubes has an end generally flattened to extend transversely of the other, and a fixing bolt or like extends diametrically of said other tube and through a hole in the flattened end.
Joints of this kind are made in lightweight structures for childrens activity toys such as swings, climbing frames and the like, and the object of the invention is to provide a more satisfactory joint for these purposes.
According to the invention, a joint of the kind described has the flattened end enclosed in a sleeve of plastics material having an integral hollow projection to receive the nut of the fixing bolt.
The sleeve may be moulded and due to its flexibility and possibly the slight resilience of the plastics material which is suitable for injection moulding, may closely follow the contours of the parts when the joint is assembled and serve to protect end edges of steel tube against exposure to weather and hence corrosion.
Additionally, the said hollow projection may hold the nut against turning when the bolt is inserted and is screwed home, and the plastics material may have the effect of preventing the nut joint becoming loose in use, i.e. act as a lock-nut.
Two embodiments of the invention are now illustrated with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a sectional view of a joint; and Figure 2 is a sectional view of a second joint.
Turning first to Figure 1, the first tube 10 is diametrically apertured to accommodate the bolt 12 with the head 14 at the opposite side of the tube from that abutting the second of the tubes.
The second tube 15 has an end flattened and contoured so as to lie in closely spaced relationship to the outer diameter of the tube 10 over an arcuate portion extending around the bolt.
The encapsulating sleeve comprises a generally tubular portion 20 shaped and dimensioned to correspond to the end of the tube 16, and formed integrally with a nut enclosing portion 22 and a bolt end enclosing portion 24. It will be noted that the sleeve is completely closed at all points except at the end 26 through which the tube is to be inserted. The nut 28 can be prepositioned in the portion 22, and is held in place due to the dimensions which are chosen so as to grip the nut.
When the bolt is pushed through and screwed into the nut, the portion 22 will hold the nut against turning at least during initial tightening. The portion 22 may be hexagonal externally and of suitable dimensions to receive a standard spanner so that the nut can be held during final tightening. The portion 24 may be an interference fit with the threads of the bolt over the area 30, and effectively this will provide the same result as if a lock nut were used which will prevent the bolt becoming inadvertently loosened.
In Figure 2 the arrangement differs in that the tube 16 has a flattened end 32 which lies in the same plane as the axis of the tube and is not curved to accommodate to the contour of the tube 10, but in other respects the arrangement is generally the same. However in this instance, the sleeve may be arranged to fit on the flattened portion only and not extend onto the circular portion of the tube 16.

CLAITS
1. A joint made between a pair of tubes, where one of the tubes has an end generally flattened and extends transversely of the other, and a fixing bolt or like extending diametrically of said other through a hole in the flattened end, characterised in that the flattened end is enclosed in a sleeve of plastics material having an integral hollow projection to receive a nut of the fixing bolt.
2. A joint as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the sleeve is moulded to closely follow the contour of the narts when the joint is assembled.
3. A joint as claimed in Claim 1 and Claim 2 wherein the hollow projection is arranged to hold the nut against turnin when the bolt is inserted.
4. A joint substantially as described with reference to Figure 1 or Figure 2 of the accompanying drawings.
