Description

SAFETY GARMENT The present invention relates to a safety garment for use by people engaging in water sports such as sailing, yachting and fishing.
It is known for people to reduce the risk of drowning in the event of their falling overboard or being swept out to sea by wearing a life jacket. However a life jacket is often found uncomfortable in use because it can prove too warm and it can impair the free movement of the wearer.
A further disadvantage of a life jacket is that when in the water it tends to ride up the body of the wearer and this requires it to be anchored securely by means of straps passing around the waist.
With a view to mitigating at least some of the foregoing disadvantages, the present invention provides a safety garment comprising pants, a breast portion, a shoulder strap for holding up the breast portion and a buoyancy aid fitted to the breast portion above the waistline of the garment.
Because the buoyancy aid forms part of a garments which fits over the legs, it cannot when in the water ride up the body of the user. Being arranged over the user's chest, the buoyancy aid does not impair arm movements and ensures that in the water the body is supported with the head out of the water.
The buoyancy aid may be formed of a foamed plastics material but it is preferred to use an inflatable bladder as a buoyancy aid. The bladder may in use either be inflated by mouth or a pressurised canister may be used for this purpose.
Advan-Xye-s.y, the buoyancy aid is disposed between fabric layers of the breast portion so as to form an inseparable built-in part of the garment.
It is preferred also to provide a buoyancy aid in the shoulder strap to fit at the back of the neck and assist in maintaining the head out of the water. There may either be provided two shoulder straps, or a single shoulder strap passing around the neck.
The breast portion may consist of a single bib-like portion with a single buoyancy aid arranged within it but it is preferred for the garment to be shaped as skiing pants with a zip fastener up the entire front of the garment so that it may be slipped on and off more easily and in this case the halves of the breast portion on each side of the zip fastener may have separate buoyancy aids.
The garment may be made of any suitable material but it is convenient to form it of a waterproof material such as nylon.
The invention will now be described further, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing which shows a garment in accordance with the invention.
It is commonly found that fishermen and sailors will often remove their jackets but will seldom take off their trousers. The invention takes advantage of this fact to ensure safety under all conditions.
The illustrated 10 is shaped in the manner of skiing pants (salopettes) with legs 12, a waist 14 and a breast portion 16. Shoulder straps 22 hold up the breast portion 16 and, for comfort, a belt 18 can be fastened around the waist.
The breast portion 16 is in two parts separated by a full length zip fastener 20 to make the garments easy to wear.
Within the fabric layers of the breast portion 16, thete are disposed two separate inflatable bladders or lungs 24 each having a mouth piece 26. The provision of two bladders 24 is an additional safety feature in case on should develop a puncture. If desired, a pressurised canister may be provided to enable automatic inflation.
The garment is conveniently made of nylon and its construction is conventional, apart from the provision of the inflatable bladders 24.
In normal use, the bladders are not inflated and the garment is neither bulky nor restrictive to wear. The absence of any sleeves makes it particular suitable for activities involving arm movement. When inflated in the water, the bladders provide buoyancy tending to support the user on his or her back, with the head out of the water.
If an further buoyancy aid is secured to the shoulder straps 22, or more conveniently a neck strap, the head can receive still further support at the neck.
It should be mentioned that various modifications can be made without departing from the scope of the invention as set out in the appended claims. For example, the garment may have sleeves and the breast portion may be in one piece rather than two. Non-inflatable buoyancy aids may be used and the buoyancy aids may be firmly secured to the garment instead of being enclosed between its fabric layers. Various other modifications will be apparent to persons skilled in the art.
