Abstract

This invention relates to underpants. The underpants are made up of a front panel and a back panel connected by a crotch. The front panel and the back panel are connectable to each about a wearer's waist by means of fasteners on the front and back panels. Accordingly, the underpants can be put on and taken off by closing and opening the fasteners so that a wearer is not required to bend down. The underpants are of particular use to disabled people. <IMAGE>

Description

"UNDERPANTS" This invention relates to underpants.
At present, the most common types of underpants available require the wearer to place his or her feet through leg openings provided in the underpants and to pull the underpants in an upward direction so that they are secured about the wearer's waist. However, elderly people, people suffering from arthritis and disabled people frequently experience difficulty in putting on such underpants. For example, people who suffer from slipped discs and other back complaints can experience pain and difficulty in bending downwards when putting on the types of underpants currently available. This can be an embarrassing and frustrating problem.
In other cases severely disabled people or hospital patients are unable to stand and underpants must be put on while the wearer is lying down in a prone position. Clearly, this is a difficult operation to perform and frequently the patient requires assistance.
Underpants which would not require the wearer to bend down would clearly be beneficial. However, such underpants could also appeal to healthy able bodied people and could also be regarded as 'fashion' underpants.
Accordingly, a need exists for underpants which can be put on and removed by the wearer without requiring the wearer to bend downwards or to pull the underpants in an upward direction, yet which can be fashionable in design.
According to the invention, there is provided underpants comprising a front panel and a seat panel connected by a crotch, the front panel and the seat panel being connectable to each other by at least one releasable fastening means, so that the underpants can be put on and taken off by unfastening the fastening means.
Preferably, the fastening means comprise a first fastening element and a second fastening element, the first fastening element being attached to a top outer edge portion of the back panel and the second fastening element being attached to a top outer edge portion of the front panel so that the first and second fastening elements are connectable to link the front and back panels about the wearer's waist thereby defining legholes.
Preferably, the top outer edge portion of the back panel comprises a back waistband component and the top outer edge portion of the front panel comprises a front waistband component and the fastening elements are provided on the ends of the back and front waistband components so that the first fastening element is connectable to the second fastening element to form a continuous waistband about the wearer's waist.
More preferably, at least one waistband component extends beyond the back or front panels so that they may be fastened about the wearer's waist.
Alternatively, the back panel has a side panel at each end of its top outer edge, each side panel being adapted to fit around a wearer's hips.
Preferably, the fastening means comprise one or more first fastening elements and one or more second fastening elements, first fastening elements being attached to edge portions of the side panels and second fastening elements being attached to the side edge portions of the front panel.
Preferably, the top outer edge portion of the back panel and the side panels comprise a back waistband component and the top outer edge portion of the front panel comprises a front waistband component so that the first fastening elements are connectable to the second fastening elements to form a continuous waistband about the wearer's waist, two leg openings being defined by the front and back panels and the crotch when a continuous waistband is formed.
Preferably, a first fastening element is attached substantially vertically to each outside edge portion of the side panels and a second fastening element is attached substantially vertically to each outside edge portion of the front panel so that the first and second fastening elements are connectable to form two substantially vertical seams at the junction of the front and back panels.
Suitably, the waistband is elasticated.
Preferably, the leg-holes are elasticated.
Preferably, the fastening means are selected from hook and loop fasteners, hook and eye fasteners and adhesive tape fasteners.
The invention therefore provides underpants comprising a front panel, a back panel and a crotch, the crotch connecting the front panel and the back panel, the front panel having a front waistband component and the back panel having a back waistband component, the waistband components being attached to the top outer edge of the front and back panels, and at least one of the waistband components being longer than the panel to which it is attached, fastening elements being provided on the ends of the waistband components so that the waistband components may be fastened to each other about a wearer's waist to define a continuous waistband, and the front and back panels, the crotch and the waistband defining leg openings.
The invention also provides underpants comprising a front panel, a back panel and a crotch, the crotch connecting the front panel and the back panel, the back panel being provided with a side panel at each end, the front panel having a front waistband component and the back panel having a back waistband component, the waistband components being attached to the top outer edge of the front and back panels and the side panels, fastening elements being provided on the side panels and on the front panel so that the side panel and the front panel can be fastened together to define a continuous waistband and leg openings.
The invention will now be described having regard to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a front view of underpants suitable for use by a female; Figure 2 is a front view of the underpants of figure 1 when opened; Figure 3 is a front view of underpants suitable for use by a male , and Figure 4 is a front view of the underpants of Figure 3 in the opened position.
As shown in Figures 1 and 2 female underpants in accordance with the invention have a seat panel 1 and a front panel 2. The seat panel 1 and the front panel 2 are connected by a relatively narrow crotch 3, the crotch 3 being sufficiently narrow to ensure a comfortable fit between the wearer's legs. As shown in Figure 2, the seat panel 1 is comprised of a single shaped piece of fabric sewn to a second piece of fabric which contains the crotch 3 and front panel 2. Alternatively, the crotch 3 may itself comprise a panel and each of the panels 1, 2, 3 may comprise a discrete piece of material, the panels then being sewn together.
In another alternative, the panels may be comprised of a single, suitably shaped, piece of material.
The outer edges of the seat panel 1 and the front panel 2 are provided with an elasticated strip 4 which ensures a tight fit.
As shown in Figures 1 and 2 the seat panel 1 and the front panel 2 are supported by a waistband 5. The waistband 5 is made up of two components - the first component 6 being located on the seat panel 1 and the second component 7 being located on the interior surface of the front panel 2. Suitably, the first component 6 is in the form of a tape which is sewn to the top edge of the seat panel 1. Preferably, the tape 6 is elasticated and the ends of the tape 6 extend beyond the ends of the rear panel 1 to form two strap-like ends 8, 9. The second component comprises a length of tape 7 sewn to the outer (top) edge of the panel 2. The tape 7 may also be elasticated. The waistband 5 proper is formed when the two components 6, 7 are connected together by fastening the strap-like ends 8, 9 to the tape 7 using hook and loop type fasteners 10.
In the present embodiment no fabric depends from the waistband 5 in the region of the wearer's hips and the edges of the seat panel 1 and the front panel 2 define two openings 11, 12 through which a wearer's legs extend. The openings 11. 12 are defined to the rear by the seat panel 1, to the front by the front panel 2 and terminate at the waistband 5.
The hook and loop type fasteners 10 are best described having regard to Figure 2 in which the underpants of Figure 1 are shown in an open position. The underpants comprise the seat panel 1, the front panel 2 and the crotch 3 and the waistband 5 bearing the hook and loop type fasteners 10, as previously described.
The hook and loop type fasteners 10 are mounted on the waistband 5 and are made up of two complementary elements. The first element comprises two strips of loop type grips 13, 14 mounted on the strap-like ends 8, 9 respectively of the tape 6. The loop type grips 13, 14 are located on the front-face of the strap-like ends 8,9 so that they are oriented in an outward direction when the underpants are assembled as shown in Figure 1.
The second element of the hook and loop type fasteners 10 comprises two strips of hooks 15, 16 attached to the internal face of the second component 7 of the waistband 1 on the front panel 2.
The loop type grips 13, 14 and the hooks 15, 16 are arranged so that, when assembled, the hooks 15 attach to the loop type grips 13 and the hooks 16 attach to loop type grips 14 respectively. Therefore, the front panel 2 is maintained in an upward orientation by the hook and loop type fasteners 10 so that the first and second components 6, 7 of the waistband 5 are connected to form a continuous waistband 1 which supports the underpants when in use.
As shown in Figures 3 and 4, in the pants suitable for use by a male, the seat panel 1 is comprised of a shaped single piece of fabric sewn to a second piece of fabric which forms the crotch 20 and front panel 2 i.e. a construction similar to that of the underpants suitable for a female described above. Alternatively, the underpants comprise a single fabric sheet which is suitably shaped and cut to form a seat panel 1, a front panel 2 and a crotch 20. Alternatively, as described above the crotch 20 may itself comprise a panel and each of the panels 1, 2, 3 may comprise a discrete piece of material, the panels then being sewn together to form the underpants.
The seat panel 1 and front panel 2 are both fitted with first and second waistband components 18, 19 respectively which combine to form a waistband 5 when the front panel 2 is in the closed position as shown in Figure 3.
The seat panel 1 is substantially triangular in shape, the apex region being connected to the crotch 20 and the remaining two corners being formed into hip portions 26, 27. The hip portions 26, 27 project laterally from the seat panel 1 and comprise narrow regions 28, 29 respectively which link the hip portions 26,27 to the seat panel 1 and which widen to form two hip or side panels 30, 31. The first waistband component 18 extends from the top edge of the hip panel 30 along the length of the top outer edge of the seat panel 1 to the top of the hip panel 31. The hip panels 30,31 are oriented upwards with respect to the seat panel 1 (this is clear when the underpants are laid in a completely flat orientation) so that when the hip panels 30, 31 are wrapped around a wearer's waist and fastened to the second waistband component 19, the resultant waistband 5 proper is substantially level. The upward orientation of the hip panels 30, 31 also ensures that the narrow regions 28, 29 rest comfortably on the wearer's hips. The front panel 2 and seat panel 1 of the underpants also comprise an elasticated strip 4 along their outside edges to ensure a tight fit at the legholes.
The crotch 20 is located intermediate the front panel 2 and the seat panel 1 and the width of the crotch 20 is sufficiently narrow to ensure a comfortable and tight fit between the wearer's legs.
The fabric in the front panel 2 of the underpants is slightly loose so as to provide a pouch 21 for the male genitalia.
The underpants are open and closed in a manner analogous to that described for the underpants suitable for a female. The hook and loop type fasteners 10 are best described having regard to Figure 4 in which loop type grips 22, 23 are mounted in a substantially vertical orientation (i.e. perpendicular to the waistband) on the outer edges of the hip panels 30, 31. The loop type grips 22, 23 attach to hook strips 24, 25 located on the front panel 2 of the underpants. The hook strips 24, 25 are mounted slightly off the vertical in an outward orientation on the outer edges of the front panel so that they are complementary to the loop type grips 22, 23 on the hip panels 30, 31 when the hip panels 30, 31 are wrapped around a wearer's waist (see Figure 3).
When assembled, as shown in Figure 3, the loop type grips 22 attach to the hook strip 24 and the loop type grips 23 attach to the hook strip 25 respectively to produce substantially vertical (i.e. perpendicular to the waistband) seams 32, 33 either side of the pouch 21. Therefore, when assembled the front panel 2 is maintained in an upward orientation.
In use, a wearer puts on a pair of underpants of the invention by placing the underpants on a flat surface in the open position, i.e., as described in Figures 2 and 4 (with the seat panel 1 laid in a completely flat position so that the hook and loop type fasteners 10 of the seat panel 1 are oriented outwards). The wearer then positions him or her self over the underpants.
Typically, the underpants of the invention would be laid on a bed and the wearer would lie down on the bed in the correct position. In order to close the pants of the invention, the wearer would then grip the front panel 2 of the underpants and pull it in an upwards direction towards the seat panel 1.
The wearer then simply attaches the loop type grips to the hook strips in order to fasten the underwear.
It should be noted that the wearer could also put on the underpants in other ways e.g. with the fasteners closed so that the underpants resemble normal underpants.
Clearly, it is not necessary for the wearer of the underpants of the case with existing underpants. Accordingly, the underpants of the invention are ideally suited for disabled and elderly people who suffer from arthritis and other complaints.
Hook and loop type fasteners found suitable for use with the underpants of the invention are the fasteners marketed under the Trade Mark "VELCRO". Alternatively, press studs, strap-fasteners, adhesive fasteners or similar type fasteners could be used.
