Abstract
Faults in a cable (10) comprising an inner core (20) and conductive armouring (22) are detected in three stages. First, the existence of a fault is detected by measuring the resistance of the conductive armouring (22) and comparing this with the expected resistance of the armouring (22). This detection makes use of an alternating signal having a frequency less than 1 kHz. Then, the resistance of the cable is measured using measuring equipment (30) connected to the ground via three ground spikes (11A, 11B, 11C). By first measuring the resistance between each pair of ground spikes (11A, 11B, 11C), the resistance (Rg1) of one ground spike can be determined and this resistance can then be eliminated from the measurement of cable resistance. By repeating this operation at a remote point on the cable (10) using further measuring equipment (31) connected to ground via further ground spikes (12A, 12B, 12C) the location (13) and resistance value (Rf) of a fault in the cable (10) can be determined. Data may be transmitted between the measuring equipment (12, 13) at the frequency less than 1 kHz via the armouring. The use of a low frequency reduces capacitative effects.
